Dear Wendy: “I Have Feelings For My Friend’s Crush”

Through one of my close friends I met this guy. We quickly became friends and now hang out with the same group of people. His sense of humor is the same as mine and we also see eye-to-eye on many topics. He’s made it clear that he would be interested in a relationship and I think if we started dating, we would work well together. There’s just one thing stopping me, and that is the friend who introduced us. Not that long ago she mentioned that she’s interested in him and has been for a few years. When I think of the two of them together, I do think they would be a good match as well, BUT I don’t realistically see them getting together. It’s worth mentioning that she knows he’s interested in me, but has no idea of my true feelings for him. I’m having a hard time deciding if I should take the chance with the guy and more than likely damage my friendship with her with no guarantee that the relationship will last, or just forget about him and find someone who none of my friends are into. Woman Marries Her Former Doorman, Childhood Crush

When I was a teen, I crushed on many, many older dudes. When I was 14, there was Rob, who worked at my local video store and was easily in his mid-20s; at 16, I had it bad for Tony, who was also in his mid-20s and wore Tevas (don’t judge!); and at 18, Jesse, who was six years older, but had known me since my boobs were just mosquito bites. I imagined that all of them would see past the age difference and fall madly in love with me too, but I didn’t really have a prayer of it actually happening. Maybe I should have been a little more ambitious — and had a little more faith — like Jessica Rosen, who, after 18 years, married her childhood crush, the cute doorman who began working at her Upper East Side apartment building when she was just 12 years old. Everyone thinks I’m an a-hole right now. Not because I’m trying to get everybody at Grandpa’s funeral to play Rock Band. No, I’m in love—and I can’t stop talking about it.

Butterflies in my stomach, stars in my eyes, I arrive at the office every morning with a new story about something adorable he’s done. We made waffles! We said the L-word! We talked about baby names! I told one of my co-workers about the love note he penned and five seconds in, she had stopped listening.

So I guffawed when I read Vice‘s “Guide To Being Totally Crushed Out”, an alphabetized list of things we do when we’ve got a crush, from “Only Calling To Hear His Voice And Then Hanging Up,” to “Jerking Off About Her.”

Remembering Our First Crushes

I love this quirky animated video, directed by Julia Pott and constructed from interviews with friends about first crushes, which, of course, got me thinking about some of my own first encounters with (usually unrequited) love. In first grade, there was Steven, whose name I used to write with my finger on fogged-up windows and mirrors, always enclosing it inside a heart. He was in love with Jennifer, who had the most enviable, super-long, silky hair. I tried to grow mine like hers, but my mother had it cut in a bob right before summer break, when I got glasses and my big, buck front teeth grew in.
