The Scent Of Despair

Violet & Leather
The scent of forgiveness. Read More »

I wouldn’t mind smelling like I sat around in a Paris cafe chain smoking, drinking coffee and wine and writing the most important novel of the century. If only the most brilliant writers knew their work was great. Not a chance. The best writers spend most of the day wallowing in self-loathing. Dead Writers Perfume evokes literary genius with a blend tobacco, vetiver, black tea, musk and vanilla. Now people will smell your despair the moment you enter a room. But you wouldn’t have it any other way. [Etsy]

The Perfect Hot Pink Sandals For Spring

Comfortable High Heels
Which brands made the cut? Read More »

I came across these Sofft sandals while rounding up links for the comfortable heel guide, and I was instantly smitten by their ridiculously bright pink straps and 70s-style wood platform. I want to wear them with my favorite black jersey dress and big vintage sunglasses to wander around the farmer’s market and feel really chic and stylish until I step in a puddle of melted snow cone and immediately regret wearing my favorite shoes outside of the house. At $100, they’re about twice as much as I usually spend on shoes, but I might have to make an exception (or engage in some shameless birthday begging). [$105.95, Sofft]

Bath Time!

I love a good shower gel, but man, there is nothing more annoying than stepping out of the shower smelling like a friggin’ perfume store. A little bit of fragrance is great, but some gels and washes are so treacly sweet that they almost make me nauseous. Enter Sachajuan’s Spicy Citrus shower gel and body lotion. It’s a softly sweet smell with rich and spicy undertones that won’t leave you feeling like you’ve just fallen into a vat of Calgon body mist. The Swedish company, which also offers a collection of high-end haircare products, prides itself on simple and clean design, an aesthetic that clearly translates to their shower gel scents. And if you don’t like spicy citrus (though why wouldn’t you?) there’s also Ginger Flower and Shiny Citrus flavors, too. [$16, Sachajuan]

As you may or may not already know, March 8th marks 102 years of International Women’s Day. The official United Nations theme for 2013 is “A Promise is a Promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women,” so you better believe we’ll be drinking to that. There are a number of ways to get politically active on this very important holiday, but if marching isn’t your thing (it isn’t mine) and you still want to do your part in commemorating, why not treat yourself to a fancy French soap and help women in need in the process? L’Occitane’s limited-edition Women’s Day Soaps are produced in Burkina Faso, Africa, as part of a partnership with a local factory run entirely by women in support of their economic emancipation, and 100 percent of the proceeds help to build literacy centers for the women of Burkina Faso. Formulated with L’Occitane’s signature shea butter and engraved with a motif that translates to “education,” this soap is as cute as it is conscious, and the program has educated over 5,000 women since 2006. Get in on it — pick up your bar on the brand’s website today! [$8, L'Occitane]

All Other Tote Bags Can Get Lost

We know you’ve never needed to pull up Google Maps on your phone, either, right? You always know where you’re going, too? Thought so! But just in case you need to give directions to, say, confused tourists, CityFabric screens the maps of 16 American cities on tote bags, tees and prints.  We fancy the $22 totebags (that’s San Francisco on the left and Austin on the right) which measture at 18″x 14.5″x 3″D and are handmade in the US of A. What’s not to love? [$22, CityFabric]

“I took all of the notes from the entire semester and wrote them on my pillowcase so I could study the information for 1 to 2 minutes every night and when I fell asleep from potential exhaustion I’d have a nice comfy place to rest my head,” said Barry Weinstein, creator of Pillowcase Studies. Weinstein’s unusual study technique helped him raise his grades and led to what is now an entire college curriculum of pillow cases. Whether you’re a student trying to ace Economics, or a graduate looking to brush up on her Biology, you can sleep with your favorite subject(s) and wake up smarter. Principles of Psychology, I’m going to sleep with you. [$19.99, Pillow Case Studies]

As The Frisky’s resident beauty hoarder, I try a lot of different skincare products. Not that I’m complaining (at all, whatsoever): skincare is kind of my thing, and I will put literally anything on my face — provided I’ve given the ingredients a once-over to make sure I approve, of course. Very rarely, however, does a product line truly wow me, and the ones that do tend to be well found-out; as in, I don’t need to evangelize because they’re already super-popular, and I don’t want to have any hand in them flying off the shelves lest I not be able to find them anymore (I’m looking at you, Tata Harper, you perfect product-formulator, you). But when I fall in love with something brand new to the market, that is when it comes time for me to shout it from the rooftops. Orico is one such line. This British import, powered by Ecocert certified organic ingredients like plant oils and advanced antioxidants, was created with city slickers in mind: all of their products are formulated for skin that is frequently exposed to pollution, stress, air-conditioning, and heating. Which, unless you live in a zen forest (and I am so jealous if you do), applies to pretty much everyone. Since launching stateside at the end of January, Orico has already been recommended by Vogue and Vanity Fair. Bottom line? Go place your order before everyone else beats you to it. I’m one of those totally undiscerning, overeager Francophiles who will gladly buy anything that even remotely reminds me of Paris, from a mug that says “Oui!” to a giant cocktail ring in the shape of a macaron (I know, I’m the worst). This t-shirt, with a black and white screen-printed design of the Eiffel Tower, fulfills my Paris obsession much more stylishly–and subtly–than my usual Paris-themed impulse purchases. But just to drive the point home, I want to wear it with cuffed jeans and ballet flats while I grab a croissant and an espresso. Oui, oui! [$18, ZenThreads]

Now you really have no excuse not to lotion up after the shower. Tired or lazy or in a rush? It doesn’t matter. Vaseline’s Spray & Go Moisturizer makes the lotioning process foolproof. Just aim and spray. This is such great news for that spot on the middle of my back that I can’t reach. And forget about waiting for it to absorb into your skin before you put your clothes on. It dries immediately, without leaving those white streaks all over your favorite LBD. You’ll emerge with glowy skin, smelling like a person who spends hours getting ready. As if. [$5.99, Target]
