I try to be as eco-friendly as possible in most areas of my life, but sometimes my penchant for procrastination overpowers my desire to be green. Example: pretty much every Christmas eve, when I realize I forgot to get any kind of gift-wrapping materials and end up buying a pile of made-in-China plastic gift bags at the dollar store and feeling terrible. This year I’m taking a different route and crafting some of these recycled newspaper gift bags. They’re funky, colorful, earth-friendly, and almost free: what’s better than that? [Yours Truly, G]

OK, this week’s project does require a bit of sewing knowledge (or a friend with some sewing knowledge who will help you out in exchange for a mimosa), but  if you can pull it off, the end result is the most adorable little coin purse ever. I’d love to whip up a colorful batch of these and give them to my girlfriends for Christmas. Along with some edible macarons, of course. [Craft Passion]

7 Grown-Up Versions Of Childhood Craft Projects

The other day, Amelia and I got to talking about this awesome DIY lampshade. “It’s like papier maché for adults,” I said, which led us into a brief discussion about how to spell “papier-mâché,” which led us into a much longer discussion about all the childhood craft projects we missed. Dreamcatchers! Decoupage! Friendship bracelets! But what if we didn’t have to miss them? What if there were updated versions of these very projects that were fun to do and yielded beautiful results? Turns out there are — click through to check out seven grown-up variations of our favorite childhood crafts…

In my endless quest to de-clutter my house and become more like one of those minimalist Danish people that get featured in O magazine, I’m trying to keep household surfaces clear. Despite my best efforts, there are always a few necessities–sunglasses, pens, save-the-date cards, etc.–floating around my living room. This adorable fabric wall pocket is such a brilliant solution, and guess what? There’s no sewing required! Just pick out a couple pieces of cute fabric and stretch them over an embroidery hoop. I’m feeling more Danish already. [Abernathy Crafts]

This project was originally created by a mom who wanted to help her young daughter learn geography and keep track of the places she’d been, but I think it would work just as well for adults looking for a whimsical way to chart their travels and plan upcoming adventures. You can choose your own colors, hang it up, and use pins and string to illustrate your next epic roadtrip. As a visual person who loves to craft and travel, I’m salivating over the possibilities. Today’s weekend DIY project comes courtesy of our friends over at Gurl.com, who show us how to add some pizazz to a basic light switch cover using decorative paper or even celebrity photos. Because really, why just turn on the light when you could be turning on Ryan Gosling? Check out the step-by-step tutorial and soon you’ll be flippin’ switches in style. [Gurl.com]

Even though “glitter” and “flats” are two of my favorite words, I must admit I initially gave this project the side-eye, since I assumed they would leave a little trail of glitter wherever you walked (which might be kind of magical in its own way, but mostly annoying). However, the brilliant Sues from We Are Not Martha swears that isn’t the case: “The glitter is stuck on there like whoa (thank you Mod Podge!), and the shoes are still super flexible.” Sweet! Worries abated, I’ve got a pair of scuffed up flats that are about to get glittered like whoa. [We Are Not Martha]
