Gwyneth Paltrow Got Advice From Robert Downey Jr. On Playing An Alcoholic

Gwyneth Paltrow says that learning to belt out twangy tunes for the movie “Country Strong” was a challenge. But the hardest part of her role as Kelly Canter, a country singer on the comeback trail after going to rehab, was learning to play an alcoholic. So how did Gwynnie do it? She consulted her good bud, Robert Downey Jr. “I just couldn’t understand how you could be so drunk that you could wreck people’s lives and then wake up the next day and pretend everything was fine. I struggled with that,” she said. “I asked Robert, ‘How does this work?’ He was really articulate about addiction and the psychology behind it. He really helped me a lot.” We hope she just asked him with choicer words than, “What was it like when you were a total f**k-up?” [Huffington Post]

Leighton Meester Has Only Had One Crushing Breakup

“I’ve never really liked anybody before. Even when I would date guys, it would sort of be on the surface and it was always a relief when we broke up. … I’ve only had one experience where it was really hard and I was really sad when it ended, but that’s what taught me a lot about myself and love and life – and that’s good.”

Leighton Meester of “Gossip Girl” and the upcoming “Country Strong” talks to Seventeen about her breakup experiences. She says that only one—her split from co-star Sebastian Stan—really affected her. Can this be true, or is Leighton gilding the lily? Isn’t heartbreak one of the universal lowest common denominators? [People] Keep reading »

Who are you kidding, you know perfectly well that when you’ve run out of presents to open on Christmas Day (or you don’t celebrate Christmas) and you’ve run out of stuff to argue about with your family, that you’re going to want to see a movie. Fortunately, there are some pretty decent movies coming out this week and if you’re in the mood for something stupid, there’s plenty of that too! So when you’ve filled up on ham and eggnog, get yourself to a movie theater because nothing says Christmas like sitting in the dark, surrounded by strangers who’re also suffering for the inevitable post-Christmas blues! Happy Holidays! Keep reading »

Gwyneth Paltrow Is A Lush

Gwyneth Paltrow admitted her dirty little secret on “Chelsea Lately” last night. She likes to hit the bottle—a lot— just like her new character in “Country Strong.” She said, “I like red wine, but I’ll drink white, rose. Guinness is my favorite beer. I like a dirty martini, vodka martini. I’m just a lush, basically. I’ll do whatever.” I’m really starting to like Gwyneth again, between this revelation and her “Glee” guest-star turn. She’s so much more interesting as a lush than as a GOOP. [Celebitchy] Keep reading »

First Look: Gwyneth Paltrow’s “Country Song”

The trailer for Gwyneth Paltrow’s country movie has arrived and, boy, is it hoping the success of Jeff Bridges and “Crazy Heart” will repeat itself. in “Country Strong,” Gwyneth plays Kelly, a successful country singer whose career went off the deep end when she became an alcoholic (sound familiar?). Now out of rehab, her husband/manager (played by Tim McGraw) is sending her on a comeback tour with a young country pop star played by Leighton Meester. There’s lots of tears and twang, people, but despite scenes of a drunk and sloppy Gwynnie, this movie looks like it lacks any real grit. Like a made-for-TV movie trying to play on the big screen. Besides, I am just not buying Gwyneth as a Southerner. She’s way too WASP-y. Keep reading »

Gwyneth Paltrow’s Country, Y’All!

Gwyneth Paltrow plays a country music singer in the upcoming film “Country Strong,” and, lucky us, she’s record the flick’s title song, which you can hear above. I have to say as a fan of country music, it ain’t bad, y’all. It doesn’t sound a thing like her! Gwynnie, of course, sang on film once before, in “Duets,” but this is much better. No clue, however, if the film is any good, but I guess we’ll find out. I am especially looking forward to the inevitable extra special GOOP newsletter, in which Gwyneth will opine on how kale smoothies are great for the vocal chords. Keep reading »
