Of course American Superhero Cory Booker is going vegan for the holidays. Cory Booker is out to save every life — human or otherwise — on the planet. I’m pretty sure that if you get a paper cut, all you have to do is tweet at Cory Booker and he’ll come out to put a Band-Aid on it for you. So the question isn’t, “Why is Cory Booker going vegan?” The question is, “Oh, Cory Booker wasn’t vegan already?”

Newark, New Jersey mayor Cory Booker has been leading an initiative to get illegal guns off the streets of the city with police seizures and gun buyback programs. So far, the Newark Police Department has collected and cataloged more than 250 firearms and countless shell casings found at crime scenes, and now they’ve come up with an innovative way to recycle the weapons: melt them down and turn them into a series of steel and brass bracelets called The Caliber Collection. “The result,” according to the website, “is a series of pieces that embody the gun’s transformation from a destructive weapon to a powerful symbol of renewal.” Each of the handmade bracelets (which are surprisingly lovely) are etched with the serial number of the gun it used to be, along with the word “Newark.” Prices start at $150, and proceeds from jewelry sales will be used to fund gun buyback programs to get even more guns off the streets. “This [buyback program] is not a cure-all,” Booker recently explained on The Rachel Maddow Show, “but everybody has the power to do something small to make a difference.” [Buzzfeed]
Cory Booker has made his decision: The popular Newark mayor will explore a run for the Senate, he announced today. “Let there be no doubt: I will complete my full second term as mayor of Newark, New Jersey,” Booker says in a YouTube video and website post today. “And as for my political future, I will explore the possibility of running for the United States Senate in 2014.” Read more…

Sure, Barack Obama won the presidential election last night and we are, admittedly, incredibly excited. But the politician we can’t stop drooling over is actually Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark, NJ. The 43-year-old, Washington, D.C. native was elected mayor in 2006, having turned to politics after gathering degrees from Stanford University and Yale Law School; he was also a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University.
