Random Single Gal Recipe: Pasta Al Limone

Hi Frisky readers! Fun fact about me — I love to make and eat food! Now, if Kelly Bensimon were to meet me, I’m sure she’d emphasize in her psychotic way that I am a cook not a chef, and I would agree. That being said, I think I manage to whip up some tasty things in my tiny New York kitchen, so every week I’m going to introduce you to an easy recipe I’m currently loving.

It’s a blisteringly hot week in New York City, but 85 degree temps do not stand in my way of eating pasta. However, spaghetti with meat or cream sauce is a lil’ heavy when it’s so hot, so linguine with lemon is a nice, light alternative. Additionally, ever since I heard about the evils of white flour, I only ever cook whole wheat pasta at home, which is much better for, you know, my rockin’ bikini bod. Also, I genuinely prefer the taste of dried whole wheat pasta over dried semolina pasta. (However, if I go out for Italian food, it’s fresh, yummy, doughy semolina pasta all the way.) After the jump, my full recipe for Pasta Al Limone. Keep reading »

The Best Cooking Show Of All Time

We’ll watch anything on the Food Network and can’t get enough of “Top Chef,” but “Zaylee Jean’s Yippity Yo Show!” is by far our favorite cooking program. The 3-year-old’s baking commentary is first-rate, and she has sooo much energy it makes us want to run home to our kitchen and toss flour in the air. (Thanks for sharing, Christina!) Keep reading »

A Man’s Place Is In The Kitchen

Earlier this month, the popular food website AllRecipes.com launched a guys-only version called ManTestedRecipes.com. According to a press release, the site caters to “the unique food interests and preferences of male cooks” and hopes to be “a virtual man-cave where men can talk about food.” After checking out some of the recipes, however, we were a little surprised. A “Guilt-less” Sugar-Free & Fat-Free Frappuccino? To make up for that decidedly non-masculine option, there’s plenty of steak and potatoes. (The names these boys give their dishes are hilarious — “Eat-able Skin Baked Potatoes” and “Easy Yet Complex Steak Marinade” are two of my personal favorites.) Can a testosterone-packed cooking site get men to spend more time in the kitchen? Hopefully — though you may or may not want to eat what they serve up. [Man Tested Recipes] Keep reading »

Try This Impressive (Yet Surprisingly Easy) Chocolate Paint DIY

Can you believe that chocolate portrait of Audrey Hepburn was done by a real person? If you’re looking for a guaranteed crowd-pleaser for a dinner party (which will also distract from a ho-hum dessert if you’re not the world’s greatest baker), check out this surprisingly simple and sweet DIY brought to you by food blog Eye Candy. We know what you’re thinking: Yeah right, Martha Stewart. But trust us, we can hardly draw stick figures, and this was a piece of cake. (Har har.)

Quick Tip Of The Day: Chop Red Chilis Without Setting Your Skin And Orifices On Fire

Last night, in anticipation of “The Bachelor” season finale, I decided to make up a chili recipe! The Twitter feed above details what happened as a result of chopping red chilis without gloves. That’s Tip #1a: Wear gloves. But if you are a moron like me and you don’t wear gloves, I learned a couple handy tricks for getting the chili oil off your hands — soap and water does not work — and alleviating the sting of chili burn. To get chili oil off your hands, rinse them in olive oil — apparently, chili oil dissolves in fat. To relieve the sting, rub a little lemon juice anywhere you’re burning (except, duh, your eyes). I wish I could say I was happy to be the guinea pig for this quick tip. Keep reading »

FoodSexVideo.com: Cooking For Hot Girls

I can’t speak for the rest of The Frisky staff, but my own cooking skills are fairly limited. (And by “fairly limited” I mean eggs and pasta are about the extent of it.) It’s not that I’m not interested in learning how to cook, it’s more the fact that most of my hobbies revolve around shoes — as in I literally did ballet for the ballet slippers when I was younger — and that’s a rather hard habit to break. So when I met the Cook In Heels a few months back and she told me about the blog she was working on, I got pretty effing excited (and did a video for her about hot date food!). The pseudonymous chef posts recipe videos on FoodSexVideo.com every ten days or so, scattered sexy food content during the week, and hilarious, filthy little shorts, too. If red patent pumps can’t get a girl like me to cook, I don’t know what can … Keep reading »

Hot Holiday Recipe: Butternut Squash And Fennel Soup

This weekend, New York City got its first big blizzard of the winter and I was snowed in. I decided to take the opportunity to test a recipe I was noodling over for butternut squash soup. Typically, when I want to cook something new, I check out different versions of it on the web — usually FoodTV.com — mostly for cooking times and temps, and then adapt it to my own tastes. This butternut squash soup is dairy-free and you won’t miss the leche one bit — squash is super creamy and filling on its own and chicken stock (or vegetable, if you want to keep this totally vegetarian) is a great flavor-boosting liquid. Check out the full recipe after the jump. Keep reading »

Crave: Holiday Pancake Pan

Itty bitty flakes of snow are showing up since the official start of winter is right around the corner! This only means one thing … time to bust out a holiday pancake pan. Get ready for the season by bringing some holiday cheer to the table. The only thing that could make this better is endless flavors of syrup. Mmmm … can’t you taste them already? What Booze Do I Bring To Thanksgiving Dinner?

When it comes to T-Day, most of your effort goes towards figuring out (or stressing about) the meal. And hey, congrats! Cooking a turkey is no easy feat. But now you probably want to get all jolly and merry to celebrate your success. So what to drink? Whether you’re in charge of the booze yourself, or a guest at someone else’s Thanksgiving table (hey slacker, now you really have to bring it), here are a few suggestions for appropriate pairings, after the jump. This Trio Pan May Save My Year

One of my new year’s resolutions for 2009 was to cook at least two new recipes each month, and now that we’re heading into October, I have, oh, about 15 recipes I need to quickly make up for. No problem — with this specialty trio pan I can cook three dishes at once, so if I figure I can use it once or twice a week and be back on track by November. Or … I can save it for the last two weeks of December and cram in 20 new dishes, which is probably what I’m going to do! Anyone have a good recipe (or 8) for lasagna? [$29.99, Amazon] Keep reading »
