This weekend was the Conservative Political Action Conference, an uber-conservative political event where all kinds of crazy shit goes down each year. It was sad because some of these people are absolutely batcrackers crazers. Like, my dad is a Fox News-loving, Bush-voting Republican and he is embarrassed by these people. But at the same time it was delightful because all weekend my Twitter was blowing up with “Oh my God, Sarah Palin said what?!” incredulity. And I do love a good Twitter kerfluffle.

Lefties, Righties Split On Food As Well

If you like deep-dish pizza, you’re a lot likelier than fans of thin crust to have conservative politics, according to Hunch, a taste-tracking website that cross-referenced millions of responses to discover that the differences between left and right don’t end at the dinner table. Among its findings:

  • Liberals are slightly more likely to prefer their vegetables fresh instead of cooked, and more likely to eat fruit at least once a week.
  • Conservatives tend to believe there’s little nutritional difference between organic and processed foods.

— Sarah Palin, as much as I hate to admit it, had a point on Fox News the other night when she spoke about double standards women face (in response to Michele Bachmann noodling a presidential run and comedian Bill Maher calling Palin a “t**t.”) Nothing is worse than so-called “liberals” who think it’s acceptable to make sexist comments about conservative female politicians. With so many points of clarifications that we could use from social conservatives — Single motherhood is bad! But so is abortion! — one would think The New York Times‘ conservative columnist, Ross Douthat, would have plenty of rich, complicated topics to dig into. But in an op-ed column that ran yesterday, Douhat argued in defense of monogamy, praising social conservatives for their “optimistic” attitudes about love and happiness, and even went so far as to cheer on abstinence-only education sex ed programs that delay sexual behavior in teenagers. Teen Proposes Girls Carry Guns To Prevent Rape

Oh, girls just wanna have gu-u-uns! Oh, girls just wanna have guns! So says Regis Giles, a 19-year-old conservative activist with a unique new idea to protect women and girls from prowling rapists: equip them with guns. The telegenic lass hails from an esteemed lineage: the blog Guanabee reports she is “the younger sister of the woman posing as a prostitute at ACORN and the daughter of Doug Giles, a Christian motorcyclist who called Sarah Palin-hating women ‘shemales’.” On her web site, Girls Just Want To Have Guns, she has posted a video of herself (which you can watch after the jump) speaking at CPAC, a recent conference for conservatives, in which she rails, “I’m sick and tired of seeing defenseless girls being abducted in broad daylight by some fruity freak aroused by raping and murdering them!” Keep reading »

Red States Heart Internet Porn

No wonder “Nailin’ Paylin” was such a hit for Hustler, red states love the GOP almost as much as they love porn! According to new findings, the people who voted for McCain also have a hard on for internet porn.

The survey, conducted by Benjamin Edelman, an assistant professor at the Harvard Business School, found that eight of the top 10 internet porn subscribing states went Republican in the past election. By searching through credit card data from 2006-2008, Edelman drew his conclusions and the statistics are shocking! With 5.47 people per thousand paying for money shots online, religious Utah was the number one state for porn subscriptions! In addition, states with populaces that claim to “have old-fashioned values about family and marriage,” had 3.6 more internet porn buyers per thousand, on average. Hmm, maybe we should start calling them the “Red Light States!” Keep reading »

Conservative Vs. Liberal Men: Who’s The Better Date?

Right Wing News, a conservative political blog, interviewed six women who’ve dated both liberals and conservative men and asked them about their differences. The overall majority seemed to think liberal men were whiny and arrogant. One woman said, “Liberals were always happy to suggest we split the check; it must be some Clintonian socialist entitlement. They also tend to own clothing displaying their irrational fear of Dick Cheney, and/or love for Che Guevara. They are the shaggy haired, greasy hipster types you find loitering in the Apple Store.” I laughed out loud at this because I totally know what kind of dude she’s talking about and his name is My Brother. Anyway, this series of interviews amused me and got me thinking about the real differences between conservative guys and liberal guys, if you try and take away your own personal bias and disagreements on “the issues”.
