The 8 Most Empowering Experiences Of My Life

The other day, Wendy wrote a list of the different things that make a woman feel beautiful, outside of hearing the words from a man. I noticed that many of the items on the list were experiences — successfully cooking a great recipe, doing yoga, etc. — and it got me thinking about some of the experiences I’ve had in my life that not only made me feel beautiful, but also empowered. These are the eight most empowering experiences of my life — tell me yours in the comments! Keep reading »

Girl Talk: Boys Like Bald Girls

When I was 21 I was diagnosed with cancer. It really sucked – and not just because of the whole “life-threatening disease” thing. My prognosis was good, as my doctors had caught it early and the type I had was considered extremely treatable. The worst part about cancer was the wrench it threw in my plans. At the time of my diagnosis, I had just started an amazing internship where I was required to work anywhere between 40 and 60 hours a week. My 22nd birthday was three weeks away. Summer had just started and I’d had big plans to work hard all day and play hard at night. In short, multiple surgeries and months of hospital visits was not what I had in mind. In the end, though, cancer might have been the best thing that ever happened to me. Keep reading »

A Fake Tan Gave Kelly Osbourne Confidence?

Kelly Osbourne has talked a lot about how “Dancing with the Stars” helped her gain confidence, but apparently getting a spray tan helped, too. As the newly appointed ambassador for self-esteem issues for tanning brand St. Tropez, Kelly talked about her struggle to feel good about herself in a press release:

“It really saddens me that so many young people suffer from low self-esteem and feel unhappy with their appearance. I think that at times we can be very hard on ourselves, which is certainly something I have experienced in my own life. I managed to overcome those negative thoughts by being healthy, thinking positively, and making small changes to my lifestyle that make me feel good about myself, such as taking more exercise and being true to yourself. ‘Dancing With The Stars’ and having my first ever St. Tropez spray tan was a huge confidence booster for me — it helped me to get fit and allowed me to look and feel beautiful from the outside, in.”

While it’s nice that a brand normally associated with the superficial would sponsor a campaign encouraging self-esteem, doesn’t it seem odd that Kelly, whose porcelain skin looks amazing, would have to claim tanning gave her confidence? However, there’s probably not a lot of money involved in being the poster child for pale skin. [Yahoo News U.K.] Keep reading »

How To Fake Just About Anything

Contrary to what your mama might have told you, “just be yourself” is not always the best advice. Almost all of us have something we’re insecure about, and while years of pricey therapy might eventually banish self-doubt, I’ve found that the best way to get over it in the short-term is to refuse to acknowledge it exists in the first place. What some call denial, I call common sense … Keep reading »

How To Go To A Bar Alone

Bars exist to create a world of potential. Yet often, they are self-defeating because it’s not all that easy to meet new people in them, especially if you’re hopping with a pack of wingwomen (read: competition, intimidation).

A notion previously reserved for alcoholics, going to a bar alone can be about creating independence as well as a tactic for meeting strangers. Or, okay, maybe you just really want a drink and don’t want to look like a loser doing it. Keep reading »
