Newsflash: Black Clothes Make You Look Like Crap

Brace yourselves, girls. Experts have found yet another culprit to accuse in the “it’s bad for you” blame game, and this time, it’s your signature color. Some yahoo claims that wearing black means you might as well hole up like a hobbit and keep your ugly mug hidden away from the world, because the color (or lack of? whatever) makes you look like hell. Not only is it supposedly aging, but it “can highlight dark lines under the chin, shadows around the eyes and wrinkles on the face, colour consultants say,” even though they’re quick to acknowledge that it remains the most universally figure-flattering hue of all time. Huh. Sounds like the old ass or your face maxim has reared its ugly, um, head again. Their solution? If you insist on wearing black, accessorize with a nice colorful hat, necklace or scarf to brighten your sunken, shriveled face. Phew, that was a close one! [Daily Mail]

“The Sing-Off” Group Teaches Us A Very Important Fashion Lesson

On last night’s episode of “The Sing-Off,” eight a cappella groups were narrowed down to six, and vocals-only versions of songs by artists from Queen to Aretha Franklin were performed. While the focus of the show is on the singing, I couldn’t help but notice the coordinating outfits the groups wore. Some, like all-girl groups Noteworthy and Maxx Factor, put on the exact same ensembles. But the guy-girl groups mixed it up, wearing similar colors in different shades and styles. Keep reading »

Ever Get Your Hair Done At A Beauty School?

Have you ever gotten your cut or color done at a beauty school or through a salon training program? You hear such mixed things about this. If you happen to get in with a fancy salon during a hair model day, you can walk away with a magazine-worthy ‘do … or a disastrous look. Try out your local beauty school and maybe the cut is just as good but one quarter the price of what you normally pay.

Here’s a story that really made us think twice about going the student route. One woman on the blog Brokelyn posted a story about how she decided to try out a $10 haircut at her neighborhood beauty school. She brought a photo with her, which showed a basic bob. Things didn’t go well from the get-go. Keep reading »

Pink: The Color For Boys?

Pink equals girl, blue equals boy. That’s the widespread association with those two colors, but it wasn’t always that way. In the early 1900s, blue was for girls and pink was for boys. Back then, the British magazine Women’s Journal explained: “That pink being a more decided and stronger colour, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl.” DressMaker magazine agreed. “The preferred colour to dress young boys in is pink. Blue is reserved for girls as it is considered paler, and the more dainty of the two colours, and pink is thought to be stronger (akin to red).” No one knows when the change took place, but by the time Adolf Hitler was in power, the switch had been made, as he labeled homosexuals with a pink triangle, which associated them with femininity.
