The Face

Have you been watching “The Face”? If not, check it out. It’s a modeling competition, yes, but unlike any others out there. Each contestant is paired with a mentor — Karolina Kurkova, Coco Rocha or Naomi Campbell — and competes against models on the other mentor’s teams. The challenges are real world and the products, stylists and brands the girls work with are first rate, unlike some (ahem) other, jankier reality TV model competitions.

So far in the season, the group of 12 girls has been whittled down to six — Stephanie, Margaux, Jocelyn, Zi Lin, Ebony and Devyn.  The Frisky was lucky enough to speak with Jocelyn of Team Naomi, Stephanie of Team Coco and Ebony of Team Karolina, and while they wouldn’t answer questions about Naomi’s temper tantrums, (which really says it all, eh?), they did give us the scoop on challenges, eliminations — and what Nigel Barker really smells like.

And don’t forget to catch “The Face,” Tuesday nights at 9/8 c on Oxygen.

If you, like us, have been feeling like the latter seasons of “America’s Next Top Model” have been a little gimmicky and lackluster, well, we’ve got a new show for you — one with three times the Tyra Banks star power. “The Face” is a modeling competition show, but unlike “ANTM,” the models will be split into teams, coached and trained by supermodels Naomi Campbell, Coca Rocha or Karolina Kurkova. Plus, it’s hosted by Noted Fashion Photographer (and baby seal enthusiast) Nigel Barker, so what’s not to love? In any case, Naomi, Nigel and the gang premiere tonight at 10/9 c on Oxygen. We’ll be watching/gawking.

Admit it: “America’s Next Top Model” has gotten stale over the last five zillion “cycles.” As much as we love Tyra there’s only so much of her histrionics and ridiculous, over-the-top photoshoots (Be a bear! Pose with a tarantula! In the snow!) we can take. And the Oxygen network is banking on that, by introducing its new modeling reality show, “The Face.” Hosted by “ANTM” castoff Nigel Barker, and featuring Tyra Banks’ evil cousin Naomi Campbell, plus modelstars Karolina Kurkova, and Coco Rocha, “The Face” has 24 contestants competing to become the new face of Ulta beauty. Model Coco Rocha Slams Brazil’s Elle Magazine For Half-Naked Photoshop Job

“As a high fashion model I have long had a policy of no nudity or partial nudity in my photoshoots. For my recent [Elle Brasil] cover shoot I wore a body suit under a sheer dress, but recently discovered that the body suit was Photoshopped out to give the impression that I am showing much more skin than I actually was or am comfortable with. This was specifically against my expressed verbal and written direction. I’m extremely disappointed that my wishes and contract were ignored. I strongly believe every model has a right to set rules for how she is portrayed and for me these rules were clearly circumvented.”

– Coco Rocha, who has long been one of the more critical voices of the modeling industry, took to her Tumblr to slam the editors/publishers of Elle Brasil, which Photoshopped her against her wishes into a partially nude bodysuit for their cover. This is a little nipple-y looking.

Well, that was ballsy of you, Elle Brasil, to break contract. I’m assuming they’re so used to models being grateful for a magazine cover at all that they don’t think they have to stay true to their word? [Oh So Coco]

A little birdie (that would be me) attended the New York City premiere of “The Iron Lady” last night and boy, were there a lot of celebs! Somehow I managed to stand three feet away from Meryl Streep without screetching “EEEE! I LOVE YOU!” and subsequently getting arrested. Somehow I doubt Amelia could exercise similar restraint were she in the presence of The Gos.

Perhaps due to the serious nature of the film — a biopic of Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom — the ladies in attendance opted for a sober little black dress look. Some were hits, some were misses. And Coco Rocha, bless her heart, accidentally got lost on the way to the Oscars red carpet.

I look at Coco Rocha and see a pretty woman. But casting directors have looked at the runway model and told her she is “too fat” and, recently, “too big” to be hired. Coco and model Carré Otis visited “Anderson” to talk about ways to protect models who start as teen girls, a subject they are both familiar with. Coco was scouted at 14, began modeling at 15, and moved into a model apartment in New York City at 16. Coco Rocha Wore Nine West Pumps—What Was Your First Interview Outfit?

Coco Rocha tells Modelinia that for her first casting—an audition to model for Prada—she depended on a pair of Nine West pumps to make an impression:

“I had to buy my first ‘casting shoes’ which were these high stilettos. Pointy, black … I didn’t even know how to walk in them. So I ran out to the nearest Nine West store.”

Rocha still has this pair of black pumps, which she says she likes to show off to visitors to her closet. While, OK, we weren’t going on model castings as our first job interviews, we still remember with clarity what we wore for those first steps into the “real world.” Keep reading »
