Even though I grew up in Oregon, where the unofficial state motto is, “We’re always wet!” I’m not sure I have ever bought a truly waterproof jacket. I gravitate toward coats that look like they should be waterproof (my Gap anorak, for example), only to have them soak through and disintegrate in the lightest drizzle, like so many papier-mache art projects on the way to the school bus. A recent downpour in London made me realize that it’s time to get serious. I’m over being wet and cold and miserable, so I’ve rounded up some seriously waterproof jacket options. Not water-resistant. I Went Crazy Thrifting And Bought 7 Coats!

On Saturday, I went to the Salvation Army coat sale for the first time. It would have been quite an overwhelming experience if my “thrifting coach,” Patrice J. Williams of Living Fly On A Dime, hadn’t given me some pointers before we began shopping. You see, Patrice has challenged herself to purchase only thrifted, second-hand, or vintage clothing and shoes for a year. Are you one of those people who, no matter how many North Face parkas you layer on, just can’t seem to keep warm in winter? You’d think by now they would have invented some invisible heat bubble that follows you wherever you go, but no (thanks for nothing, scientists). There is, however, this: the Milwaukee M12 heated jacket, which, in slightly “Back to the Future” style, provides electric heat. A battery pack charges the garment for eight hours, allowing you to essentially walk around town wrapped up in an electric blanket. The price is pretty reasonable too. I’m having a hard time finding a warm winter coat to deal with the bone-chilling cold of NYC. I want a cute but VERY warm winter options! Not trying to go out in a hardcore parka or sporty-looking snow boarding jacket. I do not do winter sports and don’t want to look like it. Perhaps a list of cozy yet stylish options? Classy enough to walk into an office with but cute enough walking in NYC. It gets cold but that shouldn’t require me having to look like “Nanook of the North.” – Victoria

NYC is definitely a place where you’re expected to look stylish at all costs, even if it’s freezing out. So here’s what I’ve learned through the decades about winter coats and this city: There will definitely come a day when you’re going to be thankful for your warmest coat, even if it’s completely hideous. I’ve held on to a bright red down coat from the Gap since the early ’00s because there is always one day that my fashionable coat isn’t going to cut it, no matter how much I layer. The other thing about dressing for the cold in NYC is that your coat makes a huge first impression, so you have to make it count. Even though you should keep your warmest, most hideous coat as an option, that doesn’t mean you can’t go shopping for a stylish coat to be your workhorse for most of the winter. My friend here (left) is wearing a good-looking coat today. It’s simple with interesting seams and subtle hardware. I shouldn’t be so impressed, but I am, mostly because dudes are generally not known for their outerwear selection abilities. I’m not entirely sure why, but it’s always been my experience that most boys seem to consider coats an afterthought, caring not at all that they look like 5-year-olds in jackets they borrowed from daddy. There are two approaches to winter fashion—either you’re a utilitarian and go for a heavy-duty parka (well, a cute, one of course), or you’re a wool/swing/pea coat kinda gal. There are benefits and downfalls to both. With a puffy jacket, you don’t have the best piece to transition from day to night, but you’re always warm. Pea coats may show off your legs and flatter your figure more, but let’s face it, they’re no second skin.
