President Obama issued an executive order today which will compel government contractors to assure they are not contributing to human trafficking, including sex trafficking, in the course of their work. Contractors will have to abolish trafficking-type practices like charging “recruitment fees” and being misleading about the jobs which are being filled. “We’re making clear that American tax dollars must never, ever be used to support the trafficking of human beings,” the President said at the Clinton Global Initiative today, [Wall Street Journal]

Gender equality got its due today at the former president’s Clinton Global Initiative. Diane Sawyer moderated a panel with the head of Women For Women International, the head of the World Bank and several big-time CEOs. Clinton himself told guests at the session, “Whether the issue is improving the involvement of young women and girls in education, to climate change and all political, economic, and social issues in between, I think empowering women is central to what the world has to do in the 21st century.” Damn straight!
