Listen To This Amazing Young Musician!

Check out this video of 11-year-old cello prodigy, Sujari Britt. Sujari’s parents noticed their daughter was musically gifted as a toddler and after hearing a Yo-Yo Ma performance and begging for her own instrument, she began her cellist career at the wee age of four. Her first solo recital was at age five, and she has performed in over 50 concerts since then. One of those concerts includes a recital with Alisa Weilerstein for President Obama (!) at the White House in 2009. Her teacher of seven years, Marion Feldman said, “Sujari must have played the cello in another lifetime.” The most mature tween I’ve ever seen, Sujari  practices about six hours a day. “My goal is to become a professional soloist. I’ll do everything that’s possible, you know?” she said. “You get out there, and you do your best, and that’s all you need to do.” Not only is her ambition and drive unbelievably inspiring, but feeling the overwhelming pride that resounds throughout this clip of her adorable parents was my favorite part to watch. The "Call Me Maybe" Chorus!

Is there anything funnier than overly-earnest sopranos belting out “Call Me Maybe”? This Carly Rae Jepsen cover by the 3Penny Chorus and Orchestra isn’t supposed to be funny — or maybe it is? — but it’s put a smile on my face this morning. [YouTube]

50 shades of grey photo

You guys, it is only Tuesday and I’ve already read a press release about a Fifty Shades of Grey-themed compilation of classical music. This doesn’t really spark a lot of confidence for the rest of the week, does it?

Yes, it’s true: the 15 pieces of music that are mentioned in the books comprisising the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy will soon be available in one convenient place: your car, or your Discman, or your very fancy home stereo system that you’ll show off to all of the vapid women you have over to seduce in your high-rise condo because you think such a thing is an accurate display of “personality,” and because the women you bed are probably into the ideas of entry-level BDSM and fucking to Mozart. (Haha just kidding, that will never happen to you, especially if you own this CD.) Keep reading »

Jingle Punks: Classical Music Versions Of All Your Hipster Favorites

I’m in love with Jingle Punks, a self-described “hipster orchestra” that covers pop/rock tunes like MGMT‘s “Time To Pretend” orchestrally. (Oh, wow, “orchestrally” is actually a word, y’all.) Jingle Punks’ music is perfect for girls like me who enjoy both classical and pop music. And who doesn’t love a good cover? I bet you can’t listen to just one Jingle Punks song. Slideshow: The Studs Symphonies Are Made Of

When we picked up Playboy, (hey, we read it for the articles!) we were pleasantly surprised by Too Hot To Handel- a piece on the lovely ladies of classical music. Sure, when you think of orchestras, old dudes with white wigs might come to mind. However, there are a bunch of young guys giving the aging art form an earful and and eyeful! Alas, nothing is sexier than a man who is well trained and good with his hands. We want to make beautiful music together with these modern Mozart’s!

Mason Bates Master composer Bates likes to push all the right buttons. Renown for melding live classical instruments with electronic music, he has rocked dance floors in San Francisco and debuted compositions Carnegie Hall, but he has never performed in a traditional monkey suit. Mason definitely makes us want to slip into something more comfortable and join him.

The Daily Squeeze: Dita’s Bras, Classical Music, And Movie Theater Popcorn

  • Dita Von Teese has been recruited by Wonderbra to design vintage-style underthings, including a limited-edition bra for Victoria’s Secret. [AHN]
  • Ever wonder why a box of Raisinets costs, like, $5 at the movie theater when you can get them for $2 at a convenience store? Well, charging so much on snacks is what keeps the price of movie tickets down, according to researchers at the University of California Santa Cruz and Stanford University. If popcorn were free, ticket prices would go up 25 percent. And at that price, we would all buy the DVD and microwave popcorn and stay at home — at least our cuddling wouldn’t be hindered by annoying armrests. [San Jose Mercury News]
  • A classical music ensemble will be performing “Sex Music” in NYC next Friday, March 7. The musicians will explore music’s erotic side with songs such as Salome’s “Dance of the Seven Veils” and Frank Zappa’s “G-Spot Tornado.” At one point, the solo bassist will even sing, hum, and whisper to his instrument. Hot. [City Guide]
