The key to making a good holiday mix is to not overdo it. You’ve got to include tons of holiday tracks, yes, but you should also add some non-Christmas-y stuff, too. Otherwise your mix will start to sound like the tacky Christmas music loop you hear in Macy’s or something. Plus, you’ve gotta mix some non-traditional Christmas hits with Mariah Carey, too. Come the holiday season, I’m all abuzz with warm, fuzzy feelings. The world is all aglitter with Christmas lights, hot cocoa and cider sit warm in my belly, dogs wear absurd sweaters, and I can’t stop smiling. I practically piss eggnog. From the day after Thanksgiving through Boxing Day, I delve into a playlist of about 120 Christmas songs—and counting. That’s roughly six and a half hours of music. Mariah Carey and Justin Bieber‘s “All I Want For Christmas” duet debuted last night during the Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center. The best I can say about it is “feel good Christmas music” with a questionably appropriate music video.
Now, Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey. High notes and shaking her spray-tanned booty is what she’s about. It is the way of the world. I think her short-short-short Santa outfit in her “All I Want For Christmas” music video with Justin Bieber pushes the line of good taste. But hey, this is a grown woman obsessed with rainbows, stuffed animals and butterflies that we’re talking about.

I can’t stand Christmas music. After a weeks worth of shopping I’m already up to my eyeballs in “Silver Bells” and “Feliz Navidad.” Don’t get me wrong, I love buying gifts, but if I hear one more light jazz rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock,” I’m going to lose it. There are plenty of non-Christmas celebrating shoppers out there, slowly being tortured by seasonal elevator music — the Heebs, Muslims, Buddhists, Jehovah Witnesses, Atheists, Taoists….well, you get the point. Still, since it’s our job, if we have the means, to help boost the economy, I would just like to suggest some tracks to the retailers out there, unless they want me to do my holiday shopping at home — where I can blast my own awesome non-denominational music. Now, let’s get in the mood to spend with these hot holiday-free jams that revel in consumerism…
