“People say that designers don’t design for ‘real women,’ and I hate that. Why wouldn’t every designer want as many customers as possible? I think [the reality of casting plus-size fashion models] is one of the the hardest things about this part of the industry. When we show samples, we’re making a model. Like any architect would make a model, any chef would make a tasting before they make the meal — that’s what the pieces on the runway are. We only make one for the first time ever. It’s not that I don’t want to make it in every size right away, but it has to work first.”
Designer Christian Siriano talked to The Huffington Post about how frequently people misunderstand the use of thin models in the fashion industry. I get what he’s saying, but I also don’t understand why those samples he’s talking about can’t be at least a few sizes bigger. His response seems like an evasive answer to the very real body image issues the industry has sparked in its consumers. [Huffington Post] [Photo: Fame/Flynet]
It’s that time of year again! That is, time for the the human clothing hangers better known as models to strut down the catwalks of Lincoln Center in beautiful, expensive and sometimes absurd designer clothing, for the Fall 2014 runway shows. Each day, we’ll present to you a selection of noteworthy shows so that, even if you can’t ultimately afford what you see (uh, we can’t), you’ll be up to date on the coming trends. Or at least have plenty of outfits, makeup and hair looks to drool over and/or laugh at. Keep reading »
Rachel Roy shocked us with one of our favorite shows of NYFW so far. The collection embodies a downtown coolness without being overtly chilly or overly pretentious. In short, we wish we could wear it all, but alas! It’s not in the budget, and instead, we’ll admire from afar. Roy was in good company, too. There were great collections from Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, Suno and Derek Lam — and you can check ‘em all out after the jump! And don’t forget to tell us who you love, in the comments. Time to give credit where credit is due: while the rest of New York City hid indoors during Blizzard Nemo, the fashion industry went forward with Fashion Week as planned. The tents have never seen so many pairs of Sorel boots! Let’s see what designers Christian Siriano, Mara Hoffman, Jason Wu, Jill Stuart, rag & bone, and Rebecca Minkoff sent down the runway for Fall 2013. Keep reading »
We had a bit of catching up to do after the weekend, so today we’re showing you Christian Siriano, Victoria Beckham, Catherine Malandrino, Ostwald Helgason, Diane von Furstenberg and my personal fave, Duro Olowu. So many shows, so little time! Check out all the collections after the jump! Keep reading »
I’ve typically shied away from wearing nude tones, but I’m super into this new trend of mixing nudes with neons and brights. Designers like Christian Siriano did it on the runway for spring, and it seems like a great way to tone down what could be too much color. Pairing a nude shirt with a bold skirt is a great way to get more use out of both pieces. And if you’re dying to wear the trend right now, we’ve got eight dresses that perfectly combine nude tons with pops of bright color.
