Today in India is a celebration called Akshaya Tritiya, a Hindu and Jain holy day which is marked by mass marriages. But human rights supporters in India, such as UNICEF, are using the day to draw attention to a less jubilant topic: child brides. Child marriage is officially illegal in India, but that hasn’t stopped too many families from marrying off their young daughters ages 5 to 12 to older “grooms” — which is another way of saying sex slavery. Today, the Wall Street Journal points out one of the more controversial of the anti-child marriage campaigns, called The Girl Store, a website set up to look like an online retailer that advertises “100 percent genuine girls. Young. Innocent. And available. Experience the sensation of buying a girl.” Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Preacher Sentenced To 175 Years For Taking Girls As “Child Brides”

  • Tony Alamo, a 75-year-old evangelist preacher, has been sentenced to 175 years in prison for taking underage girls as “child brides” and molesting them. Alamo apparently threatened the girls with “the loss of their salvation.” [NY Daily News]
  • Some pregnant women are forgoing the H1N1 vaccine, saying they are more comfortable with holistic approaches, like acupuncture, yoga and “obsessive hand washing,” to fend off the swine flu. [Chicago Tribune]
  • An 18-year-old female student at Loyola University recanted an allegation made this morning that she was sexually assaulted after drinking with three men in her dorm room last night. Police said she was being evaluated at a local hospital. [ChicagoBreakingNews.com]—I wonder if she was copycatting the young woman who lied about a gang rape at Hofstra.

Today’s Lady News: 12-Year-Old Child Bride Dies In Childbirth

  • How sad: a 12-year-old girl who was a child bride in Yemen died of severe bleeding after struggling to give birth for three days. Fawziya Adullah Youssef’s father married her to a 24-year-old farmer when the girl was only 11-years-old. [Daily Mail]
  • At a conference in Vienna, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke out against human trafficking, especially sex slavery, and warned that the global finance crisis will “likely aggravate the problem further.” [AP]
  • Anorexic and bulimic model Kate Dillon confessed that she once purged for 10 days and then received a compliment from an editor at Vogue that she’d never looked better. “I remember thinking, ‘Wow, if this is what it takes to be told I look great, I don’t want to do this anymore,’” Dillon said. After a two-year break from the modeling industry, Dillon returned as a so-called “plus-size” model at a size 12. [Fox News]

The marriage is allowed by Sharia law, which the husband has accused the girl’s aunt of violating by allowing the girl to hide from him. [Fox News] — Sheesh. And some people are worried about the age difference between Candace Bushnell and her husband?
  • PETA is taking down their crap billboard depicting a large woman, which says “Save The Whales! Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian.” [Jezebel]
  • U.K. health officials warn that some moms have given birth in hospital hallways, bathrooms and elevators due to maternity unit overcrowding. Maternity beds have been cut by almost 25 percent since 1997. [Sky News] — No wonder this woman had her baby on the pavement outside a British hospital.

    While my Jewish mother would do almost anything to marry me off, apparently I should thank my lucky stars that she hasn’t put me up for sale! Although, I’m already past peak for this eBay-style site of teen brides — MarryOurDaughter.com. On the page, parents advertise their young daughters and sell them through an online form to turn a profit. Like happy mother, “Mrs. James P”, who wrote this testimonial: “Our 15-year old daughter Mary wasn’t very popular and did nothing but mope around the house bringing everybody down, so we decided to marry her off through your site. Now our house is a lot cheerier and we love our new swimming pool and Jacuzzi!
