Summer blockbusters like Hancock (gag!) and The Dark Knight (okay, I’ll see that one) have left little room for my beloved chick flicks, with nary a Dermot Mulroney film or Nora Ephron script in sight. But if you’re really jonesing for some schmaltz and chivalry, these DVD releases should get you through the lonely summer months until the sure to be joyously corny My Best Friend’s Girl comes out in September. Sarah Jessica Parker: Single In The City Again?
Sarah Jessica Parker is thinking about going downtown. She’s had her fun as an uptown girl with Sex in the City, but now that it’s finished off, she’s looking for a new sensation. SJP is currently in talks to play an single mother in the city that lives about 50 blocks south of her old bachlorette pad in the The Ivy Chronicles. Based on Karen Quinn’s novel of the same name, it’s another guaranteed chick flick hit. But will she sign on with Warner Brothers and make the movie? [Huffington Post]
Female Ensemble Movies: The Frisky’s Top Five
You might think the trailer for the movie The Women makes the movie look lame, and it very well could be, but did you know the movie is a remake of a 1939 classic starring Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard, Joan Fontaine, Marjorie Main, Butterfly McQueen, Hedda Hopper, and more? Well, both movies are part of the “female ensemble movie” genre, according to a Variety article, and this differs from the “woman’s film” or “chick flick” genre in that there are more than three female leads. See, there are girl movies, and then there are movies with lots of girls in them. We See Chick Flicks: Juno, Atonement, and P.S. I Love You
Every week it seems a new movie comes out targeted at women — we’ve seen many of them, some of which we’ve gotten a guilty pleasure out of (Someone Like You starring Ashley Judd), some we’ve genuinely adored (Stealing Beauty by Bernardo Bertolucci), and many, many, many more which we’ve absolutely loathed (usually if Jennifer Lopez is the star, that’s a bad sign).
