10 Reasons Chick Flicks Are Awesome

It’s easy to trash chick flicks, like Marisa Meltzer did this week at The Daily Beast. They set false expectations for women. The actresses are capable of more serious work. Blah blah blah blah blah….

But formulaic as the genre is known to be, you’ll still find us front row at the latest “He’s Just Not That Into Your Confessions Of 27 Dresses Bride Wars In The City” release. Chick flicks—gasp!—have redeeming value and we’re not afraid to say it.

After the jump, 10 things we lurve about the lady flicks. Keep reading »

“(500) Days Of Summer” Plus Five Other Indie Chick Flicks

I’ve been waiting for this day for months. “(500) Days Of Summer,” which is guaranteed to be my new most favorite movie, is in theaters today! Sadly, however, I’m under the weather and likely won’t be getting off my couch to go see it tonight, as planned. Sniff. But the film, starring eternally adorable Zooey Deschanel and uber hottie Joseph Gordon Levitt, is hardly the first indie chick flick. Which Chick Flick Character Are You?

Chick flicks are generally the lamest of movies, but we still watch them, making them huge blockbusters and giving them the longest of lifespans on Netflix. Of course, part of the reason we keep seeing them despite their high cheese factor is because we all want to believe in the possibility of happy endings, but I think a lot of their popularity has to do with women feeling like they are one of the characters. 10 Chick Flick Cliches That Are NOT In “He’s Just Not That Into You”

You know what? I know that everyone and their mom is going to hate on the movie version of “He’s Just Not That Into You.” Maybe there was a reason to hate on the book — I don’t know, I didn’t read it — but this movie looks funny. For starters, I love Ginnifer Goodwin; I also have been known to stare at a cell phone for over an hour, willing it to ring (with a call from a guy I totally love); I also have spent many, many years making crap excuses for bad boy behavior because I just didn’t want to recognize that maybe he was either A) a douche or B) a perfectly fine who was just not that into me. Am I betraying women everywhere for admitting to that? I don’t think so. Anyway, in the hilarious video above, the male stars of the film explain the 10 Chick Flick Cliches that are NOT in this particular chick flick. So you could technically maybe bring a dude to it. Only I wouldn’t, if you ever want to hear from him again. Keep reading »

Women love movies. Dudes love movies too. Unfortunately, women and men don’t always love the same movies — that’s why we once vetoed a dude because he couldn’t see the cinematic power of Fear. You want emotions and romance and hot guys, he wants explosions, and blood, and protruding limbs. You want Reese Witherspoon, he wants Bruce Willis. 27 Dresses sounds awesome, 28 Days Later not so much.
