Glamour held their 21st Annual Women of the Year Awards at Carnegie Hall last night, and some of the most bold-faced (female!) names in entertainment, politics, art, fashion, and social justice came out to show their support and recognize the often underrepresented causes that the Awards bring to light. Of course, with this many high-profile women in one place, we’ve got a pretty substantial amount of fashion to ogle. Here’s ten of the best, the worst, and the what-the-hell-was-she-thinking.
Chelsea Handler and Gloria Steinem have been hanging out and I’m never invited. It’s cool. I’m not, like, devastated or anything. But I’m just saying, if Arianna Huffington walked up to Chelsea at a Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women event and lectured her how she’s “so maternal” and “needs” to have children, I would have had Chelsea’s back, too. Chelsea and Gloria and I can be “CGJ,” — sort of like “MVP” but feminist and smart and awesome. [E! Online] Keep reading »
Whitney Cummings scored prime real estate this weekend on the interview page of The New York Times Magazine. As a Whitney fan and someone who is really excited for “Whitney” and “2 Broke Girls,” her two new shows, I was super-psyched. Then I read the rude, douchey, and sexist questions by interviewer Andrew Goldman and wanted to throw a hot latte at him. Instead of asking about comedy or acting, Goldman nailed her with at least three questions about being attractive and the perception that pretty girls must sleep their way to the top:
AG: On those Comedy Central roasts, your fellow comedians liked to joke about how you slept your way to fame. How accurate is that criticism?
WC: If sleeping with people worked, I would be doing it. Do you know an example of anyone who’s ever slept with a producer or whatever that has gotten them anywhere?
Great answer to a rude question, Whitney. Alas, the Q&A then worsened. Keep reading »
Rashida Jones just can’t stop talking about her experience making out with Zooey Deschanel, whose girlfriend she plays in “My Idiot Brother.” Or is it that people just can’t stop asking her about it? Back in May, she told the Advocate of her first sapphic experience, “‘I was like, ‘Oh, my God, girls are so pretty and soft. No stubble burn! What am I doing with guys?’ [Laughs] I haven’t dipped back since, but I was very appreciative of the experience.” A few days later, she told GQ, “I feel like I’ve come a long way from my first job, when I had to get mouth-to-mouth resuscitation from Rip Torn.” Earlier this week, she told VH1 News, “The boys were so giggly on set…they loved it!”
Last night, she appeared on “Chelsea Lately.” And of course the topic came up and she gave some new info. Keep reading »
“Last time we talked about how much I really don’t like working out, and I’ve kind of fallen. … I really like it now. I feel like, ugh, I’m that person. I came to L.A., got a bikini wax, went blond and loooove working out. The catsuit’s unforgiving, man. I’m a vegetarian and right now, I’m living on kale and dust for the training.”
—Anne Hathaway talks to Chelsea Handler about how she’s staying in shape for her role as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises.” Nooooo, Anne! Eating next to nothing while you’re exercising tons just isn’t okay. Perhaps she confabbed with Jessica Alba, who recently shared with Lucky that’s she’s losing her baby weight by eating 1200 calories a day. “Basically I’m starving—it sucks,” she said. “I drink a lot of water.” Now, there is a part of me that would rather see actresses being honest about their strict diets rather than being all “I eat cheeseburgers all the time and am just naturally this skinny.” But I really wish these women didn’t feel the pressure to live in nutritional misery to whittle off pounds. And it really worries me that giving flippant quotes like these normalizes extreme dieting. [NY Daily News, ONTD]

On Monday, Chelsea Handler tweeted, “Elizabeth Banks is on tonight’s show, so all my dreams have come true; I can now say I’ve interviewed myself.” Sure they do look a bit alike in that both-have-shoulder-length-blonde-hair-and-angular-faces way, but apparently people confuse them all the time? In last night’s interview, Chelsea divulged that the comparison isn’t always flattering. Chelsea explained, “People always say they look alike, but Chelsea is obviously much later. Meanwhile, we’re the same age.” Elizabeth shared that it goes both ways for her too. “I was sitting in Toronto and a guy walked up to me and said, ‘My girlfriend loves you. She would die if I got your autograph.’ I was like, ‘Sweet. Cool.’ He said, ‘I just love your books, My Horizontal Life.’ I was like, ‘Oh, he thinks he’s meeting Chelsea Handler.’ I couldn’t ruin it for him. He asked, ‘What are you doing in town?’ So I said, ‘I’m on a book tour.’ Just being Chelsea, drinking my vodka.” [LA Times] Keep reading »
Yay, Vanessa Carlton has a new album out! She sat down with Chelsea Handler to gab about the new CD and of course Chels gets right down to brass tacks: “So you recently came out as a bisexual?” Carlton performed at a gay rights event and told the audience, in an offhand way, that she’s had relationships with both men and women. This came as news to her family! She said her mom called her on the phone upset because “she’s concerned about being a grandma.” Keep reading »
“I want to do something that’s going to utilize my brain a little more than this show. If ['Chelsea Lately'] is the show that I’m going to do, it’s going to change. But it may turn out that I’m done with it altogether. I can’t keep doing the same thing; my brain is bleeding. I want to do something that’s more mindful and isn’t celebrity-centered. I’m not looking to totally bail on E! They’ve done a lot for me, and I like it here. If you take away the Kardashians.”
—Chelsea Handler talks to The Hollywood Reporter about what she hopes will happen now that her contract with E! is creeping towards finished. The network is trying hard to extend her contract, but Chelsea says she hasn’t been so impressed with their counter-offers and it sure sounds like she’s ready for a big change. But she swears it isn’t ‘The Tonight Show.’ “That’s a job for Jimmy Fallon. I’m way too divisive for a show like that,” she says. At least she is self-aware? [THR] Keep reading »
Actress Eva Mendes
has a lot in common with the host of “Chelsea Lately.” Apart from sharing a taste for shoes with really super-high heels, both Mendes and Chelsea Handler
admit they have an aversion to getting married.
Mendes believes in true love and spiritual unions and all that good stuff — she’s just not into having a piece of paper to seal the deal. “We were doing it for land originally. I mean, how unromantic is that?” she asked.
“Well,” replied the ever-practical Handler, “if we were doing it for land now I’d probably be more interested.” Read more… Keep reading »
