The Good, The Bad & The WTF: Chanel’s “Little Black Jacket” Exhibit Opening

Chanel events always, without fail, draw an extraordinarily dressed crowd — Karl Lagerfeld, after all, only associates with the most fabulous of people (and yes, the same standard applies to his choice in pets). The Parisian fashion house feted the opening of a 113-photo exhibit to preface Lagerfeld’s upcoming photo book, a collaboration with former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief Carine Roitfeld. “The Little Black Jacket: Chanel’s Classic Revisited” features celebs like Sarah Jessica Parker, Kanye West, and Tilda Swinton celebrating — what else? — Chanel’s iconic little black jacket. If you’re in the New York City area, the exhibit opens Friday, June 8 (that’s tomorrow, y’all) at 18 Wooster St. and runs for a week, and the book comes out on August 15. If you can’t make it to check out the show, and don’t feel up to cashing out $98 for a book (me neither), here’s the next best thing: the good, the bad, and the “what in the name of Coco was she thinking” from last night’s event. Commençons!

Everyone I know is probably sick to death of hearing me talk about Karl Lagerfeld, because he is a bastard, but who could ever get tired of hearing about his Siamese cat, Choupette? Not us. Especially when he goes on at length in interviews about how spoiled she is. WWD sought out Karl at the premiere of his “Little Black Jacket” exhibit in NYC, and while his responses to inquiries about Chanel and politics were succinct in typical Karl fashion, the design superstar couldn’t stop gushing about his feline friend. I would even go so far as to say she might be his daughter. Behold:

“She is a famous beauty. She is nine months old. [Model] Baptiste [Giaconi] gave her to me for Christmas to watch for two weeks when he was away but then I refused to give her back. I thought she was too cute. She is like a kept woman. She has a strong personality. She has lunch and dinner with me on the table, with her own food. She doesn’t touch my food. She doesn’t want to eat on the floor. She sleeps under a pillow and she even knows how to use an iPad. She has two personal maids, for both night and day. She is beyond spoiled. … When I am not there, the maids take down, in little books, everything she did, from what she ate, to how she behaved, if she was tired, and if she wasn’t sleeping. In the nine months, we already have almost 600 pages.”

Karl Lagerfeld is known as much for making bizarre and inflammatory comments as he is for designing clothing. Let’s recap: Adele is a little too fat for his liking. He loves Dominique Strauss-Kahn. He doesn’t tolerate ugly children. He only likes high-class escorts, and doesn’t like sleeping with people he really loves. He thinks the only people who take issue with thin models are “fat mummies.” Perhaps best of all, he claims that Coco Chanel was “never a feminist because [she] wasn’t ugly enough for that.” Seriously. To be frank, I like to think of Karl as a caricature of sorts who can never really be taken all that seriously in any context aside from fashion. He is, after all, the Kaiser, and the Kaiser’s gonna say what he damn well pleases. Keep reading »

Cécile Cassel is an unfamiliar name in the States, but as the daughter of the late Jean-Pierre Cassel, the young actress’s patrician French pedigree is kind of a big deal. Her brother has a larger American presence — you may recall his role as the ballet teacher Thomas Leroy in “Black Swan” or perhaps his leading roll in “La Haine,” the 1995 French film still hailed as one of the best movies ever made. A quick Google search will inform you that Cécile had a brief speaking role on the final season of one very famous television show that saw her as Chloé, the angsty, Gallically existential daughter of — wait for it — Aleksandr Petrovsky. Evidently, she also has a way with high fashion, seeing as she sat front row at Monday’s presentation of the Chanel 2012/13 cruise collection in beautiful Versailles. Cécile was a standout, even among such international style icons as Tilda Swinton, Vanessa Paradis, and Inès de la Fressange. Keep reading »

That Chanel logo on your powder compact is great, but wouldn’t it be even better on your face? No need to worry–soon you’ll be able to buy Chanel logo stickers as part of the brand’s upcoming Collection Versailles. Chanel’s makeup director Peter Philips says the black velvet stickers are supposed to resemble Marie Antoinette’s famous “beauty spots;” we think they resemble, well, little Chanel logo stickers. So, what do you think of this idea? Will you be sporting Chanel face stickers any time soon? [Elle]

The Good, The Bad & The Meh: Chanel Artist Dinner

Red Carpet Style!
Check out the good, the bad, and the ugly of celebrity style. Read More »

You can count on the Tribeca Film Festival and the events during it to provide a very eclectic crowd and, with that crowd, plenty of fashion fodder. Tuesday night’s turnout for the Chanel Artist Dinner at the glamorous Odeon was distinctly fashion-based, attracting designers, socialites, and — my absolute favorite — some of the modeling industry’s most illustrious names (and Kimye, but let’s forget about that). As one might anticipate, this gathering was almost unprecedentedly well-dressed, so it takes an opinionated eye to separate the best from the rest. Fortunately, I’ve never exactly been known for my neutrality. Here’s my selection of the good, the bad, and the just meh from last night’s event.
