I can always count on Karl Lagerfeld to reassert just how much different his life is from the lives of us mere plebes. Rumors swirled this week after he suggested via Twitter that “we would see him like we’d never seen him before,” and yesterday morning WWD came out with the details: the April issue of Elle France, which debuts tomorrow, features an 8-page editorial depicting the famed couturier in various … pedestrian circumstances. It does so with Lagerfeld’s trademark condescension, a wink that says, “Of course I would never actually do this.” The joke’s on us, then, because this glimpse of a different Karl comes on the heels of the recent launch of his new line, an eponymous lower-priced venture. I guess he’s trying to work on his mass appeal. [Fashionista]

Chanel is one of the biggest trendsetters season after season. After all, we’re talking about the brand that made temporary tattoos chic. Global creative director of beauty Peter Philips is inarguably a makeup mastermind and his bedazzled eyebrows are nothing if not striking, but I pray that this latest venture will not be the next one to make its way off the runway and out into the streets. High fashion is high fashion for a reason. This is the reason.

Alicia Keys, you are generally really cute. And you can sing really well! But that doesn’t mean you should wander around the Paris Chanel show –  which is basically like Oz for fashion people — with weird head jewelry on.

The Karl Lagerfeld Robot Manages To Say Something Offensive And Weird, Again!

For some reason, the French put Karl Lagerfeld in charge of the Paris edition of the Metro yesterday, giving the Chanel designer free reign to say whatever ridiculous thing he pleases. Herr Karl’s made such a habit of ridiculousness — claiming the best way to stay thin is by chain-smoking and downing Diet Coke and consomme (see The Karl Lagerfeld Diet for reference)– that nothing surprises us anymore. He just poops these kind of brazenly tacky comments out. Like his take on Lana del Rey and Adele. Just another day in the life of a strange O-ffend-O Bot. [Styleite]

I await each Chanel show with bated breath, thrilled at the prospect of Karl Lagerfeld’s latest blowout. Need you be reminded, he notoriously flew a 265-ton glacier imported from Sweden to the venue of his Autumn/Winter 2010 show. For the Spring/Summer show that preceded it, he turned the runway into a massive barn, replete with actual hay. But just how lavish is Chanel, exactly? Let’s put it this way: lavish enough to host Tuesday’s S/S 2012 couture show on a life-size plane situated in the Grand Palais. Keep reading »

The Couture Collections Are Here! Our 27 Favorite Looks From Day One

I love fashion, but the Paris couture collections make me absolutely giddy. These collections celebrate fashion as high art, and present frothy, impossibly constructed delectable creations that make grown women salivate. Of course, couture gowns cost in the tens and hundreds of thousands, so we won’t be buying one anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look. The first day of couture week featured shows from Giambattista Valli, Christian Dior (currently helmed by Bill Gaytten), Chanel, Versace, and Alexis Mabille — and they did not disappoint. Click to see some of our favorite looks from the first crop of shows.

Style Retrospective: Blake Lively

My, how Blake Lively has changed. I remember seeing her for the first time cast as the tomboyish soccer player Bridget in “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.” I would have never suspected that the spunky blonde who I fondly associated with a golden retriever would soon snag the role of the glossiest reformed bad girl to ever hit the Upper East Side, let alone grow into the face of Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite fashion female. Color me impressed. More remarkable still, Blake has been outspoken about her lack of stylist, which may have a little (or a lot) to do with some of her more … shall we say, ill-advised sartorial choices. One of the things I love most about Blake? She’s not afraid to get risky. Click through for a brief history of Blake’s style.

Karl Lagerfeld isn’t exactly warm, fuzzy and cuddly , but dang, his new kitten is! Herr Karl adopted a new kitty, named Choupette (a French term of endearment), which is also what Herbie the Love Bug was nicknamed in those “Herbie” movies. The idea of Karl having a sweet little kitten seems quite at odds with his cold German exterior and creepy leather gloves, but I suppose even Chanel designers need love too. [Styleite]

Chanel cotton pads

Neutrogena makeup wipes aren’t fancy enough for you? Chanel sells 100 individual cotton makeup wipes for $20. It is actually not a terrible deal: each cotton wipe comes out to 20 cents each. However, the pads are all emblazoned with Chanel’s interlocking “Cs,” which is a bit much for something you’re just going to toss in the trash afterwards and screams “label whore!” to me.

Are Chanel makeup wipes completely batty or a budget-friendly indulgence? [Chanel via Nylon] Keep reading »

Holiday Gift Guide: 10 Gifts For The Francophile Girl

Everything you'll ever need for your holiday shopping. Read More »

Confession: I’m a little bit obsessed with blogs written by American girls living in Paris. Their style, their food, their apartments, their men … ooh la la!  My favorite is Making Magique, but I also like Badaude, the group blog HipParis and Dead Fleurette (who lives in Oslo, but is a Francophile). Maybe I’m deeply jealous of my friend Leonora Epstein, who wrote The Frisky’s 365 Days In Paris series. Or maybe I’m just envious of a world where the lighting always looks just-so. Or maybe I just want to wear red lipstick and polka dots without apology.

Either way, I’m going through a serious Francophile phase myself and hoping my holidays are filled with macarons and Chanel perfume. Shopping for a wannabe Parisian this holiday season? Allons-y! Keep reading »
