Scent is certainly a powerful element in generating attraction from the opposite sex, but when a new study came out this week pointing to Chanel No. 5 as the perfume most likely to seduce a man, we were doubtful. The idea that you could bag a guy with a specific perfume seems far-fetched as it is, and the claim that one in 10 women met the men of their dreams while wearing No. 5 seems even further from the truth. Have you smelled the stuff? It’s one pungent aroma that came into style in the ’20s and smells like it’s been in the same bottle since then.

Tony Conigliaro based the No. 5 Champagne Cocktail on a famous perfume from a Parisian fashion house, which you should have guessed by now. He came up with the concept for the cocktail after realizing that the perfume-making process is similar to the way cocktails are made. First, he studied how that particular Chanel perfume is made. Then, he realized a sugar cube in the champagne was the perfect way to bring the notes to the top of the drink. It took two years-worth of trial and error to develop the cocktail, which was sampled at “The Bar with No Name” launch in Angel Islington, London. The No. 5 Champagne Cocktail is served in a wide-brim, bespoke flute to allow extra room for the bubbles to release. Conigliaro is the ambassador for French brand Merlet fruit liqueurs, and he knows his stuff when it comes to cocktails. He told Dazed Digital that the biggest cocktail myth is that martinis should be “shaken, not stirred.” Contrary to James Bonds’ tastes, he says, a martini will be too soggy if it’s shaken, instead of smooth and silky which is a result of stirring. Not only is Audrey Tautou playing Coco Chanel in the new biopic “Coco Avant Chanel,” but she’s also the face of the Chanel No. 5 perfume. The luxury brand has released a short film commercial starring Audrey and directed by the man behind “Amélie,” Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The film has a similar feeling to “Amélie,” with its saturated colors and subtle quirkiness, but it’s a little cheesy. Plus, isn’t it some kind of conflict of interest to have Audrey representing the brand and playing the fashion house’s matriarch in a film around the same time?
Chanel certainly does like to do movie tie-ins with its No. 5 ads. Before Audrey, Nicole Kidman was the face of the classic perfume. Her commercial for the infamous perfume bore a striking resemblance to the famous woman/poor man story line in “Moulin Rouge” and was directed by that film’s Baz Luhrmann. But the film had been out for a few years by the time the commercial aired, so it seemed like less of a conflict than Audrey’s. At least Audrey’s new Chanel No. 5 ad isn’t directed by the same person who did “Coco Avant Chanel.” Then, we’d really have issues. Keep reading »
