Fashion Bloggers Can Cast CFDA Ballots … If They Ask Nicely

It’s official: Fashion bloggers are taking over the world and are infiltrating all areas of the industry. And you thought it was only about fame and free stuff? (Note: Wait, technically I guess I’m a fashion blogger, and I don’t even get those things.) Apparently, some of these lucky bloggers will get to vote on the CFDA awards—which is a pretty big deal. When New York‘s The Cut heard about this, they wanted to know more, and got an official answer from the CFDA:

“Apparently, this year the CFDA decided to include Internet people because many were submitting requests to be a part of the voting process. So being a part of the voting is actually as simple as asking — and then getting accepted. Any bloggers who didn’t receive ballots can simply ask the CFDA to be included this year. The CFDA will review all requests and accept those who ‘have covered fashion in a significant or knowledgeable way in the past year.’”

So, would writing about mustache jewelry murses and things you could store in harem pants qualify as significant fashion coverage? Because then we want in. [NYMag.com] Keep reading »

Beyonce Wants You To Buy A Shirt For Haiti

Beyonce has been named the official face of the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s “Fashion for Haiti” knit tee, which (at $25 a pop) will benefit the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Buy one: The group’s “Fashion for America” heart T-shirt ended up raising $2 million dollars for the Twin Towers Fund after 9/11. [CFDA] Keep reading »

Google’s Latest Launch: A Fashion Line

Not only is Google trying to take over the entire world, but they’re also attempting to invade your closets. Apparently, the Internet giant is selling some rather high-fashion goods in its Google Store. This small trio of items represents the winners of the Vogue/CDFA competition in which, “Each [designer] was asked to create a one-of-a-kind item that was inspired by Google, whether it be the logo’s colors, technology, or access to information … ”

Cool idea, yet the products are pretty pricey and don’t offer enough innovation in aesthetics for us to drop the $85 on a t-shirt, $300 for a knit scarf, or $200 for a magnifying glass necklace. However, the proceeds do go back to the CFDA to support emerging designers. What do you think? [Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Olsens To Design For JCPenney!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have a long way since their days of cheap-o Wal-Mart fashions. And were it not for the serious success of their high-style line, The Row, the news that they’re now designing a juniors line for JCPenney might have been laughed off as lame mall trash. There’s little info on this JCPenney collaboration other than that the range will be called Olsenboy (menswear inspired, perhaps?). Sadly, a “juniors” line would mean that in order to fit into the styles, we’d either have to bring our 14-year-old selves back form the past, or lose some 100 pounds. Target, can you please sign these ladies up for a project? [NY Mag]

There’s also some highbrow news for the Olsens—this week the twins were inducted into the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), joining talents like Alexander Wang and Jason Wu. Well done. [NBC's The Thread Blog] Keep reading »

Anna Wintour: Public Enemy #1 Of Discount Shoppers?

There’s no denying the rush of joy (and feeling like you’re getting away with theft) when you find an incredible designer piece at Loehmann’s or Nordstrom Rack that you can actually afford. Of course, on the flip side, there’s no more annoying feeling in life than when you’ve just spent your entire paycheck on an item of clothing, only to see it marked down 50 percent the next week.

Either way, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour doesn’t seem too happy about discounts in general (no surprise there). But even we were shocked by her rawtha extreme views! Keep reading »

New York Fashion Week May Change In A Major Way

CFDA President and fashion world matriarch Diane von Furstenberg think that the fashion industry is “in crisis.” From showing clothes months before the season they’re in stores to overly commercialized shows, and a growing sense of boredom coupled with a shrinking number of designers showing in the tents at Bryant Park, something has got to change. [The Cut]

They’ve got a few ideas, and naturally, so do we … Keep reading »

WTF? Justin Timberlake and Olsen Twins Join CFDA?

So, of course, being invited to join the CFDA, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, is the highest honor an American designer can achieve. Oddly enough, William Rast, Justin Timberlake’s clothing line, and The Row, from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, have both been inducted to the council. Is anyone else uber confused? We sorta get the Olsens. After all, their clothing line has been gaining lots of buzz since it first debuted, and the fashion set loves it for being well-made and well-designed, if a little pricey. But William Rast? What’s to love? It’s primarily known for producing denim. We need answers, and we need them now! If not, we’d at least like a CFDA invitation ourselves since it looks like anyone with a needle and thread can join. Sorry, but we had to take it there! [CFDA] Keep reading »

The CFDA and Vogue Announce the Fashion Fund Finalists

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and Vogue revealed the 10 finalists for the fifth annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund initiative, which helps emerging designers with financial support and business mentoring. And the finalists are… (drumroll, please) Keep reading »
