Queen Latifah Releases A Just-Okay Lifestyle Brand With HSN

Queen Latifah has possessed a powerful image since the 1980s. Who can forget the impact of a female MC donning queen-like garb — leather Africa medallions, Nefertiti-esque hats, and other Afro-centric attire? But, still, we would never argue that she’s a fashion icon. So we’re kind of surprised she, too, has a lifestyle brand with HSN. Literally every celebrity has a fashion or lifestyle collection, causing our heads to spin around and question what it means to be an actual fashion designer. Keep reading »

Katie Holmes Moonlights As A Designer

Did you guys know that Katie Holmes was designing clothes these days? Neither did I, but apparently she’s been doing it for two years after pairing up with her friend and stylist Jeanne Yang. Their line is called (creatively) Holmes & Yang, and it all started on a photo shoot where Katie was the subject and Jeanne was the stylist. Jeanne recounts that Katie was looking at a pair of light colored pants with a visible pocket. “[Katie] said, ‘Why didn’t they put a nude lining in?’ ” says Yang. “I thought, ‘That’s crazy that she would notice that.’ This wasn’t just an appreciation of pretty clothes.” Years later, the two decided to team up and their mission is to make super luxurious wardrobe staples—emphasis on the luxury since a cocktail dress retails for well over $2000 and a blouse will set you back $900. Oh, and they also make some of their designs with matching ensembles for girls, since both ladies have super fashionable toddlers. Keep reading »

Is Brigitte Bardot’s Handbag Collab With Lancel Slightly Hypocritical?

Oh, dear. Did you know that blond bombshell, French icon, and timeless style muse Brigitte Bardot might not be so picture-perfect in real life? We learned from Wikipedia (via The Paris Blog) that since the ’90s Brigitte has been outspoken against “immigration, race-mixing, some aspects of homosexuality and Islam in France, and has been fined five times for ‘inciting racial hatred.’” La la la! Fingers in ears! Can’t hear you! We did know, however, that the ex film star is a staunch animal rights activist, so it feels surprising that she’d sign herself up to do a fashion collaboration with Lancel, a French leathergoods company. Of course, the Bardot purse will be an “eco-friendly/green bag made of 100 percent natural fibers” (it hasn’t come out yet, so only sketches of the design are available). Perhaps Bardot’s intention is to attempt to change the materials Lancel uses, but it’s doubtful that a company creating leather bags since 1876 would all of a sudden go green. Just sayin’. JWoww Flaunts Her Filthy Couture

Admit it. You’re anxiously awaiting the return of “Jersey Shore” to find out what trouble those guidos and guidettes get into in Miami. In the meantime, the cast is out and about, satiating the world’s need for tan bodies and fist-pumping with a few well-paid appearances. JWoww showed up on the red carpet of the MTV Movie Awards in a design of her own making: a pink lacy dress embellished with 1,000 Swarovski crystals that looks more like a nightie you’d wear to bed than a dress you’d wear for a date or night of dancing. Since she’s launching her own line, called Filthy Couture, it was about time she did some shameless self-promotion. If this dress is any indication of the future creations she’ll place on the market, her “designs” will be perfect fodder for worst-dressed lists. “I’m more like rocker-edgy, but very sexy,” she said, explaining her style. “Definitely all my dresses and bathing suits and my jeans and shirts will be like that. I keep it sexy classy. I won’t go to porn star sexy. I won’t go that far.” Too late, Jenni, too late. [People Style Watch] Keep reading »

Ready To Take On The Grandma Chic Look?

Grandma chic is officially back on the style map, so it’s time to dig through grandma’s closet or head to your local thrift go-tos. But for those of us who have a phobia of vintage stores and pre-worn clothes, Liza Minnelli has the solution, with a fashion line for QVC! Her collection of clothing and jewelry, The Liza Collection, will consist of sparkly sweaters, sequins, and baubles inspired by her very own closet. “My life has provided me the ability to amass a wonderful wardrobe designed by fashion’s brightest stars. I am excited to work with HSN in launching The Liza Collection and to have the opportunity to share my favorite looks with millions of women who want to look fabulous and feel their very best,” she explained. Liza’s style may look ridiculous now, but we don’t think it’ll be long before style bloggers start showing off their best pouts in Liza-inspired get-ups. For sparkly sweaters galore, mark your calendar for June 30 at 10 p.m. ET, when her line launches on QVC. [QVC] Keep reading »

Quotable: Alber Elbaz Explains His Feelings Toward Celebrity Designers

“I feel that some celebrities think that because they are famous, they can do fashion. Imagine if I want to be now a dancer. Trust me, I can’t. I can’t jump. I can’t even limp from one point to another. I feel that there is this kind of confusion. Everybody wants to do everything, everybody needs to do everything, and everybody feels that he can. And I’m still feeling that a dancer should dance and a chef should cook and a singer should sing and a designer of clothes should do clothes. Because the moment we try to do everything for ourselves, we’re becoming very mediocre in what we do, and we don’t go to extremes and we don’t touch excellence. And I prefer to touch excellence.”

Nicole Richie’s Clothing Line Could Result In Fashion Victims

We were skeptical when Nicole Richie launched her jewelry line, House of Harlow 1960, a couple years back. Images of her multi-colored hair, denim miniskirts, and general “Simple Life”-era tackiness flashed before our eyes and, as a result, we were shocked when House of Harlow turned out to be quite cool on the whole. Vintage-inspired pieces in black and gold had us salivating, and we came to see Nicole as a stylish grownup instead of a rebellious teenager. So when we heard that she was coming out with a clothing line, Winter Kate, we readied ourselves for a parade of retro crowd-pleasers as laid back as Nicole herself. Much to our disappointment, however, images of the upcoming collection are out and most of it feels busy and just a bit awkward. Click through for more images and tell us what you think. Joss Stone Really Loves Her Foot Tattoos

Since everyone’s a designer these days, Nine West hired singer Joss Stone to collaborate on a fall 2010 capsule collection, resulting in three different pairs of Joss-approved shoes. Now, sure, inspiration comes from random places, but Joss and Nine West found their inspiration in a very unlikely source: the singer’s flower tattoos. “Each of my tattoos holds a very special meaning for me,” Joss said. “I love that the [collection] will incorporate some of my unique tattoo designs to give the line an even more personal connection.” Conveniently, her tats are on the top of her feet, so you can imagine that the shoes she’ll create will be designed to accent and show off her ink. Proceeds for the collection, which ranges in price from $70 to $120, will benefit Soles4Souls. At least the newest celebrity designer has a charity focus in mind. [WWD]

We’re Lovefools For Nina Persson’s (Of The Cardigans) Designs

The Cardigans know a thing or two about playing a lot of roles in life. After all, they did once sing: “I’ve been your mother, I’ve been your father … I’ve been your sister, I’ve been your mistress.” Lead singer Nina Persson is adding a new label to her life. She’s collaborated with a Swedish fashion brand called Hope to create a special capsule collection. The pieces are romantic and vintage-inspired, but not over-designed. It would seem Persson, who hadn’t ever thought about dabbling in fashion before, took a restrained but practical approach to the line. She says, “I’m not a designer, so it felt like it would be ridiculous for me to try something complicated, avant-garde. No one wants to see Nina Persson attempting couture, you know? So … we went through my closet, and I pulled out all these things I love but that I’ve always wished were different in some small way … We just merged my favorite things together, that’s it. Not very ambitious.” Keep reading »

Celeb Designer News That’s Too Legit To Quit

We (kinda) fell for the April Fool’s news item about Lady Gaga designing for Alexander McQueen. Curses! Now, for all kinds of celebrity fashion line news that’s actually true:
