As you’ve probably figured out by now, the promise of summer calls for a simplified makeup routine. There are a few ground rules — no heavy foundation, no dark eyeshadow in the day time, and please, for the love of god, no sticky lipgloss — but the general guideline is just to pare it all down. I know it’s hard out here for a girl who feels lost without her smoky black eyeliner or a security blanket of thick base, but there aren’t many things that are less attractive than all that stuff melting down your face. Like all things (jokes), the stars do it best, so let’s take some cues from these ladies for keeping cool when it’s really, really hot.
What are your thoughts on Julianne Moore‘s eyeliner here? Va-va-voom chic or just too wacky witch? I can’t decide. On one hand, she totally played her makeup cards exactly right—she went big on the eyes and muted the rest of her face. On the other, I just can’t seem to get past the fact that I can barely make out her eyes through all the black! (And talk about making her eyes look smaller.) I think what she did here (or her makeup artist did, rather) was go with dual eyeliner. Basically, she started with a liquid, applied a line all the way around her eye, making it thicker at the outer corners and thinner at the inner corners and then came back with a shadow over top. And from the looks of it, the product has a little bit of shimmer in it too (are you seeing the wet-look there?), like the shadow in Stila’s Purrfect Eyes kit. My advice? If you are going with the double-dip of eyeliners, try it out first on just your top lid, then see if it’s really necessary to pile it on. Keep reading »
This isn’t a how-to-do-an-updo post—but I do really love Lake Bell’s latest updo. Check out all of her baby hair running along her hairline—we all have it to some degree, and it can be totally annoying to deal with. The damn baby hairs just don’t stay put where you want them to. Getting them wet only solves the problem for 10 minutes, then they dry up and frizz, wack out and don’t listen to even the strongest hold gel. The one thing that does really, weirdly tame the baby hairs? Clear mascara. True story. Buy the cheapie kind and just use the brush they give you to comb your hair into place! You won’t get super shiny/glossy or wet looking hair this way, either. Keep reading »
Ummm, not sure if anyone’s in the market to smell like Amy Winehouse, but if so, you may be in luck. Rumor has it that a perfumer has offered the troubled star close to a million dollars to launch a 1950s-inspired fragrance. There’s no word yet on the name, but can we take a guess at what eau de Amy would smell like? Top notes of earthy substances, bottom notes of tobacco and middle whiffs of vodka and gin. After the jump, more celeb merch no one asked for! Keep reading »
