Janelle Monae’s Surprising Beauty Secret

We couldn’t possibly be any more obsessed with Grammy-winning artist and new fashion It Girl, Janelle Monae. Seriously, this gorgeous chick not only literally rocks, she’s got a mean sense of style and can moonwalk like a champ. What’s not to love? We’re waiting with bated breath to meet her at the MAC store on Fashion’s Night Out, but in the meantime, we’re spying on her unusual beauty regimen. While we can agree that some of her favorite products, like MAC’s Studio Finish concealer and #35 lashes are indeed superb, we were surprised to learn that when it comes to her “off” days, she has a rather unique source for blush and lipstick: “… when I am with family or running errands, I use Whole Foods’ organic raspberries for blush and dark cherries for stained, moist lips. There’s nothing like having genuine natural colors on your face,” she told our friends over at the Beauty Counter.

Seriously!? I have never heard of that, have you? And ya know what, I am so totally intrigued that I need to run to the grocery store ASAP. [Beauty Counter] Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Lily Allen Takes Eyeshadow To A Whole Notha Level

Lily Allen has been absolutely wowing us with her eye makeup lately, what with all the metallic swooshes and crazy liner. But somehow we missed this photo from last weekend’s V Festival in the U.K. and just had to share. Is it working? You be the judge. But yeah, she totally went there, that’s for sure. The Fashion Peacekeepers: The Olsen Twins

Sometimes we feel like Us Weekly‘s “The Fashion Police” and other similar style critics can be a tad harsh. Also, they tend to have these really boring, conservative styles and we have to wonder what their real fashion credentials are. (Case in point: US Weekly‘s “Top Cops” include random comedian Stefanie Novik and Chet Cannon of “The Real World, Brooklyn.” When did they ever go to design school!?) The Fashion Peacekeepers are here to say, hey, can’t everyone’s styles just get along?

Oh you Fashion Police! You’re so … predictable. Of course they hate the way Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look at this Opening Ceremony party in Japan and added them to their lineup, but we beg to differ. First off, let’s think of the context here: like it or not, Opening Ceremony is a hipper-than-thou avant-garde kind of boutique that’s all about experimental fashion. (If you don’t believe me watch this highly entertaining video starring Chloe Sevigny.) Second, this is Tokyo, where lots of young folk pop similar “fun” headgear on their heads the minute they step out of the office in the evening. Believe me, they just earned, like, 10 million cool points from their Japanese fan base. Thirdly, they just look downright cute. In summation, we’re pretty sure their inspiration was our recent post on how wearing animal ears is the hottest new thing. We called that shiz over a month ago. [E!] Keep reading »

Kate Gosselin Gets A Makeover, Actually Looks Good

We’re officially in shock and awe here. Kate Gosselin, a woman whose very hairdo makes us cringe — and the fact that it’s caught on as a trend inspires us to shout out “why!?” and pump our fists at the heavens — is looking halfway decent in an upcoming issue of People. Shot in LA by Nigel Parry last week, Gosselin did not actually get a new haircut; this look is the result of some rather clever styling involving plenty of hairspray and possibly a clip-on thrown in the mix. Seriously though, she’s almost unrecognizable. As much as anyone in their right mind would probably ditch the old ‘do after seeing this pic, sadly, once you butcher your hair in a Gosselin fashion, it’s probably pretty hard to get back to square one. And you thought your bangs were hard to grow out. [ohnotheydidnt] Keep reading »

Quick Pic: Kylie Minogue Is A Leather Mama

Kylie Minogue has been killing it lately, but we’re not sure if anyone but her could pull off this wild-looking leather fringe jacket. Still, she kind of aces it with the not-too-precious gray bag, restrained black boots, whatevs hairstyle and T-shirt underneath. Lesson learned: If you’re going to wear some crazy-ass “fashion!” item, keep the rest of your look simple. Do we like? [London, 9/2/09] Keep reading »

Style Stealer: Keri Russell’s Field Jacket

Keri Russell was spotted out and about in Brooklyn this weekend, and while we couldn’t help but notice her white canvas slip-ons (our summer obsession), we think her army green field jacket would be perfect on a cool fall day. In fact, Amelia paired one with a printed blue and maroon dress today, which toned down the dress and ensured that the jacket didn’t look too “Army.” Check out six of our favorite utility jackets after the jump. Kim Kardashian Can Add “Beauty Editor” To Her Resume

Kim Kardashian is one busy lady. Between guesting on “America’s Next Top Model,” on-again, off-againing with Reggie Bush, dying her hair blond and announcing a new fragrance deal, she can now add “Beauty Editor” to her list of accomplishments. Hot on the heels of not quite A-listers getting in on the print world action (Levi Johnston, we’re talking to you), tabloid OK! magazine announced today that Kim will be a contributing beauty editor and dispense her knowledge of creams and potions and blue Barbie eyeshadow to the world. As a former magazine beauty editor myself, I’m so honored that she’s joined our illustrious ranks of the few and the proud. I would warn her that it’s not all fun and games though. Trying out new facial techniques and getting your hair done for free is really tough! (Oh wait, on the other hand, she should be just fine.) And something tells us she’ll get to bypass all that pesky copy to edit and those unpleasant late nights in production and pass straight to the makeup chair. Keep reading »

Potential Surprise Celebrity Guests At Fashion’s Night Out

From Anna Wintour‘s imminent trip to Queens to stores staying open until 11pm (gasp), odd/fun news regarding Fashion’s Night Out is cropping up every day. But today brought with it by far the strangest new info. Apparently Rosie O’Donnell will be reading from Nora and Delia Ephron’s new book, Love, Loss and What I Wore at the Giorgio Armani store…[New York Post]

After taking a few minutes to process this news and weave a complicated mental web or reasoning as to why Rosie O’Donnell is participating in Fashion’s Night Out, we got to thinking about which other surprise guests we don’t normally associate with fashion might be making an appearance. Our ideas after the jump. Keep reading »

Heather Mills Creates Horrifying Eco-Friendly Clothing Line

You’d think someone who worked as a “model” would know a thing or two about clothes. Kate Moss, with her enormously popular line for Topshop, is the perfect example of this assumption coming true. But just because you have worn clothes for your job doesn’t mean you have the skills need to design clothes professionally. Case in point: Heather Mills, the latest celebrity to launch a clothing line.

Last Thursday at the Celebrity Catwalk charity event in L.A., Heather Mills debuted her new Be@one recycled clothing line. In our opinion, it looks like she went to Goodwill, bought some old prom dresses, and wielded a pair of scissors. Heather’s website says the new brand “is about to show there is nothing trashy about recycling unwanted clothing!” We couldn’t agree more that recycled clothes can be cool — just not the ones Heather “made.” [Celebitchy]

After the jump, our favorite looks from Heather’s Be@one collection. God help us if anyone buys them. Keep reading »
