I am generally involved in a passionate love affair with Mila Kunis’s wardrobe, both her decadent red carpet dresses (the lavender Elie Saab she wore for the 2011 Academy Awards was one of the most gorgeous things I have ever laid eyes on) and her low-key but chic off-duty ensembles. She has an amazing body and knows how to dress it in a way that manages to be simultaneously jaw-droppingly sexy and totally relatable, like Monica Bellucci with a copious dash of Meg Griffin — I wonder why? But when it comes to this look (all Phillip Lim with the exception of her Dior pumps) from yesterday’s CinemaCon, I’m ambivalent. For the record, I am firmly pro-formal shorts, even metallic ones, so that is not the issue here. I like almost everything about it: the boxy jacket and peachy nude blouse are spot-on, as are the shoes, but the waist of the shorts and the way the light catches the sheen of the fabric leave Mila looking lumpy in the midsection. I’m not saying she looks fat or anything like that at all, but literally lumpy and just unflattering. What do you think: am I being nitpicky? Do you love this look, or would you leave the shiny shorts at home? On Ashton Kutcher’s bedroom floor, perhaps?

Katy Perry is an unexpected addition to our Well Played list with a serious departure from her trademark candy-coated-crack styling. I’m kind of feeling the dark purple hair, and this Temperley London dress is just stunning on Katy, so much so that I’m even willing to forgive her inch-thick pancake makeup. A nude lip with this look would have pulled it together seamlessly. But I have to ask: what’s with the strap hanging off her shoulder? Girlfriend is practically begging for a wardrobe malfunction.

From what I’ve heard, things can get pretty weird at Coachella. This is especially true for Vanessa Anne Hudgens (does she still use the “Anne” in her name? I really don’t know). The music festival, which now spans two sold-out consecutive weekends and also happens to have officially jumped the shark, is essentially the trust-fund hipster’s corporate-funded version of Woodstock, so I guess she’s dressed somewhat appropriately given the setting. Here’s the thing: she looks like the sordid love child of the Brooklyn-bound L train and Forever 21, or maybe even a “Hippie Girl” Halloween costume. Neither of these are a good look.

Ciara showed up at a Valentino store opening earlier this week rocking some seriously striking two-tone hair. Her locks go from deep, dark brown at the roots to white hot blonde at eye level down to the ends. It’s a pretty extreme version of the ombre hair trend–so, what do you think? Is it edgy and stylish or way past time for a touch-up?

It’s bizarre to hear the words “mullet” and “trend” in the same sentence, but here it goes: mullet skirts, in all of their business in the back/party out front (I guess that makes it more of a reverse mullet) glory, are a huge trend right now. Its inception, like that of most trends, was on the runway: the style was almost unprecedentedly popular during the Spring/Summer 2012 season, shown in some incarnation at Thakoon, Alexander McQueen, Diane Von Furstenberg, DKNY, and more. It didn’t take long after for celebrities and fashionistas alike to pick up on what is technically called the “high-low” skirt. Some pull it off well, while others… don’t pull it off at all. It’s definitely a tricky trend to master for anyone, but the real question is, would you be down to give it a shot? If you’re a ballsier street stylist than I, more power to you — I’ve included a few styles to shop from after the jump. Keep reading »

Miranda Kerr leads a pretty charmed life, what with being a Victoria’s Secret model with a killer body who also happens to be married to Orlando Bloom and all. I have to give the girl some credit, though, for putting together a consistently cool style repertoire. When she’s not all decked out at events — or, on the flip side, not dressed at all for her VS work — Miranda is out and about in casual, breezy looks that I can’t help but covet. In fact, I would even go so far as to compare her natural command of separates to that of my (and everyone else’s) ultimate style icon, one Kate Moss. A bold statement, yes, but Miranda never disappoints. Case in point: this look that Miranda wore out in NYC yesterday is simple but not boring and urban chic without losing its elegance. Find out how to steal the model’s effortless style, after the jump! [photo via Just Jared] Keep reading »

Inspiration Board: Wearing A Maxi Dress For Fall

Look at Olivia Wilde trying to be all incognito in the photo above. It’s okay, Liv, we’re paying more attention to your early fall look than you, actually. Why are we so smitten with her ensemble, you might ask? Well for starters, we’re suckers for stripe maxi dresses. But even more than that, we love that Olivia took a summer staple and made it appropriate for fall. The trick to successfully working a maxi dress for autumn is to have hints of skin showing while also adding rugged leather and suede pieces. That way you don’t look as if you’re trying to push the season too far or hold on to the last one. A word of caution, though: your leather items should be more boho than biker. Click on to see our inspiration look. Keep reading »

Inspiration Board: Molly Sims Bright & Light Color Combo

Summer is winding down now, but we’re still loving bright colors. While the color-blocking trend got us to try wearing colors together, we still realize the impact of bold color with neutral cream. Just check out the photo of Molly Sims above. The tailoring of her orange-red blazer says, “I’m not to be messed with,” but the fluttering of her cream mini dress says, “But I can have fun too!” We took inspiration from Molly’s look, but tweaked it a bit, swapping the orange-red blazer for a coral one, and chose round-toe pumps over pointed shoes. See the look and get the details after the jump. Keep reading »
