Amelia Earhart Was The First Celeb Fashion Designer?

Huffington Post

Before Amelia Earhart became famous for flying, she was all about the needle and thread it seems. What, you didn’t know she was a fashion designer? OK, we weren’t aware either, but you learn something new every day, right? Amelia learned how to sew as a young girl and made her own clothes while working as a social worker, all before she took to the skies. In order to finance her flying expeditions, she launched her first line in 1934, Amelia Earhart Fashions, which sold at Macy’s in New York and Marshall Field’s in Chicago. Amelia was all about creating designs for women which were sensible—separates, comfortable pieces, and machine-washable items—with a bit of whimsy, which included shirt tails and parachute silk raincoats with buttons shaped like propellers. Of course, as a designer, Amelia created her own clothes as well, including a jumpsuit that was designed to be something comfortable to wear in the cockpit. This isn’t the celebrity fashion line of today either: Amelia’s patterns were published and featured in Woman’s Home Companion magazine.

You can find some of her pieces in the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison, Missouri, you know, like when you’re in the ‘hood. But you might wanna start thinking about incorporating aviation styles into your wardrobe ASAP. [Huffington Post]

Bebe Hires The Kardashian Sisters. Um, Yay?

The Kardashian sisters

Though hard to admit, it seems the Kardashian sisters do know something about fashion and running a business. After all, their store, Dash, has taken off—but are they ready to design? While we’re not quite sure, Bebe, apparently, has full faith in the girls and has hired Kim, Khloe, and Kourtney to create a collection for spring. “This is honestly a dream come true!” Kim wrote on her site. “We have always loved fashion and have wanted to design for such a long time and now we finally are!”

No word yet on just what their line will look like, but we wonder: Will you buy Kardashian designs at Bebe? [Er, seems like that’ll be a whole lotta “sexy,” and yes, those quotation marks indicate irony.—Editor] [People]

Liam Gallagher Has New Clothing Line, Doesn’t Care If You Like It

Liam Gallagher must’ve observed Lindsay Lohan‘s design trials and tribulations, and decided, “Hey, if she can do it, I can too.” He has a new clothing line in the works called Pretty Green and even filmed this highly informative promotional video! It’s packed full of fantastically narcissistic insightful quotes and Zoolander-esque moments involving brooding and smoking cigarettes against a gray backdrop. My favorite highlights: “You get a bit more classier as you get older,” “I’ve got some time now, I’m changing gears, but I’m still speeding,” and the philosophical, “Wearing top clothes and singing f**king in tune is pretty important isn’t it? I think it’s pretty much the same thing isn’t it? I can do both.”

What a renaissance man indeed! I also appreciate that he expressly reiterates the fact that if no one likes the clothes, at least he’ll get a new wardrobe out of it. My friend who sent this to me wrote, “What a tosser!” I say he’s just being a totally honest bloke, and, clearly, he takes himself his fashion expedition very seriously. Tell it like it is, Liam! Why Do The Lohans Keep Thinking They Should Design Stuff?

Dina Lohan To Design Shoe Line

I’m starting to think it was a fluke that Lindsay Lohan‘s line of leggings did so well, especially after the failure of the Emanuel Ungaro runway show she influenced and her well-documented, epic fashion disasters. I mean you can’t really mess up a pair of leggings, can you? Now, mom Dina has caught the design bug because, you know, she’s so fashionable. Dina is creating a line of “designer” shoes called Shoe-Han. Can you even design designer shoes if you’re not a designer? Anyway, if you’re seriously interested, then the shoes should be released around Mother’s Day 2010 and will be sold at LoveMyShoes.com, a “popular” retailer on Long Island where the Lohans are from.

Heidi Klum’s Jewelry Line Goes Bust

Heidi Klum Jewelry

Heidi Klum could have used a real four-leaf clover. The gold ones she peddled in her Heidi Klum Collection have gotten her two-year-old line jewelry shuttered. Van Cleef & Arpels, the French jeweler who owns the rights to the symbol, unleashed their legal hounds on Klum, accusing the model’s company of copyright infringement. To avert a costly lawsuit, Klum decided to close shop. Maybe this is further proof that models and celebs really should leave designing to the pros and stick with what they do best.
