Was Miley Cyrus twerking while her makeup team applied her glam look for the Maxim Hot 100 party? Miley is the mag’s choice for hottest woman alive, but the chalky white makeup around her mouth makes her look more like the hottest ventriloquist doll. Like, from far away, her mouth looks like it has skin-colored bandages around it. (Side story: I once hooked up with a guy who tried to cover an ENORMOUS zit on his chin with a small piece of band-aid and it had the same effect.) I suspect an overzealous approach to covering blemishes and/or beard burn around the mouth or a weird attempt at facial contouring is to blame for this makeup mishap. Or twerking, because Miley always be twerkin’.
We may think celebrities are always picture perfect, but every once in a while we see behind the curtain — especially when those bright bulbs are flashing on the red carpet. Makeup is required. More specifically, powder. But it’s a delicate balance. Too much and your favorite celeb may look like a clown, too little and they’re shinier than an oil slick. Click through to see some very unfortunate celebrity powder mishaps.
Winged eyeliner is one of the most versatile, and most flattering, makeup looks around. It gets a bad rap for being difficult to achieve, but once you’ve got your technique down, you’ll be able to nail it every time. “Holiday makeup” implies many a thing. It’s festive! It’s fancy! It’s … probably a little over the top. You could go the obvious route, with red and green and tons of sparkle and, like, a wreath or pine needles in your hair, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Here, Leighton Meester shows us the perfect way to bridge the gap between classic and festive without throwing an impromptu Christmas party on your face. Let’s take a closer look at what’s going on here and break it down real simple, after the jump … Keep reading »
How do you like Emily Blunt‘s new lighter hair? I think it looks gorgeous ― I recall reading somewhere that she’s actually a natural blonde, so it makes sense that this new shade flatters her coloring so nicely. This makeup is so simple and pretty, but the softly gilded touch around her eyes makes it festive enough for any holiday celebration (and, as you can see on Emily, looks stunning with similarly toned jewelry). Low on product and maintenance, this look is gorgeous no matter how long you’ve been out in the cold. I’ll show you how to get it, after the jump! Keep reading »
I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about the cupcake-y dress Keira Knightley wore to the “Anna Karenina” UK premiere, but one thing is for absolute certain: her makeup was gorgeous. Keira is, you know, one of the most naturally beautiful people alive, but makeup artist Lisa Eldridge made the very best of the actress’s features for the occasion. She said of her decision to focus mainly on a feline smoky eye, “I wanted to create a soft, pale, and pretty makeup that had a romantic feel but was careful to add strength around the eyes so the overall look wasn’t washed out against the dress.” Lisa, who spoke to Grazia Daily just after the event, used Chanel products to create the look (Keira is the brand’s beauty ambassador). Get the full scoop after the jump, but don’t be put off by the potential costliness of recreating it — I’ve also included my top product picks for taking Keira’s cues at a more affordable price range. Relax, you guys: the code red alert for Jessica Biel’s bangs trauma has been lowered to third-degree orange! Just kidding, they still look terrible, but at least she’s is figuring out how to work with her unfortunate fringe, no? As seen at the photocall for her new movie “Total Recall” (a remake of the original 1990 film), this is one of my favorite looks that I’ve seen on Jess: soft-focus skin, very little on the eyes, and a rich pink-red lipstick (which seems to be Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet in La Fascinante) to bring the focus to her full lips and make her hazel eyes look greener. From the ears down I love the cool, beachy waves she’s sporting, but the bangs must go. I repeat: the bangs must go.
When a female celebrity offers a makeup-free photo to the public of her own accord, thereby putting herself on the same level as us mere mortals, she’s usually lauded for her alleged bravery and commitment to disproving the smoke and mirrors of Hollywood perfection. AnnaLynne McCord hopped on the sans fards freight not so long ago, and she was met with commendation and praise for showing off her blemished normal-girl skin. It’s a strange phenomenon, but non-famous women love to see seemingly flawless celebrities looking, well, non-famous.
So I wonder why everyone, from bonafide bloggers to your average backseat critic, is losing their cool about this Instagram photo Kelly Osbourne tweeted of herself before bed, calling the picture of the celeb daughter and Fashion Police pundit everything from “scary” to just plain “unflattering.” Keep reading »
