RIP Society: Black Cats Are Being Abandoned Because They Don’t Show Up In Selfies

black cat

According to the RSPCA, a British animal charity, abandoning animals that aren’t photogenic has become “a national problem” in the U.K. Of the 1,000 cats currently living in RSPCA shelter, 70 percent are black. Between 2007 and 2013, there was a 65 percent increase in the number of black cats taken in at the Blue Cross animal charity. “Black animals tend not to photograph as well as other cats with more distinctive markings,” they told The Telegraph. Sadly, it seems that a pet’s ability to take a good selfie is worth a lot more to some people these days than how much love they can give. Many pet owners apparently complained when dropping the cats off at the shelter that they didn’t show up well in pictures, and prospective owners at the shelter requested to meet cats that were any color other than black. Meanwhile, orange and white cats, who show up better on camera, are being adopted left and right. This also makes it tough for the RSPCA to advertise the black cats in photos on their website. Even though these kitties were once thought of as bad luck, many Britons believe they bring the opposite, but their lack of photo cred seems to leave them in the dust. Come on animal lovers, we’re better than this! [CosmopolitanTelegraph UK] [Image via Shutterstock]

Here’s A Map Of The World’s Internet Cats

Internet Cat Map
They Know Your Cat's Address

Owen Mundy, who teaches at Florida State University, published an amazing project called “I Know Where Your Cat Lives,” that digitally maps 1 million of the roughly 15 million cat pictures on public image hosting sites using data that the cats’ humans made available. Users can browse the map for cute kitty photos all over the world, which is a whole lot of fun until it sinks in that we (and thus, countless potential creepers) really can pinpoint exactly where all of these cats and their families live. To put the project together, Mundy searched for images with a “cat” tag on them, ran the photos through algorithms, and located the cats through the latitude and longitude coordinates embedded in the photos’ data. The project makes a pretty scary statement about how much information we share about ourselves online without thinking twice. I would say that this encouraged me to stop posting cat pictures to keep my privacy a little safer, but let’s be honest, I’ll probably never stop. If you want to keep the kitty creepiness going, the map has a Kickstarter page to help raise funds to keep up with costs. [The Atlantic]

Watch This Kitten Attack A Ceramic Cat

Silly Kitty, That's Not A Real Cat!

This kitten got herself all worked up about this ceramic cat, but she seems to be missing the fact that her new friend is not real! [Tastefully Offensive]

I’m Totally Impressed By This Cat’s Parkour Skills

Cat Parkour
Didga The Super Cat

Didga the skateboarding cat can add parkour to her resume now, too. The two-year-old cat was adopted at 13 weeks by a pet trainer who’s taught her everything she knows about her talents in feline sports, and this video is her coolest yet. Watch and enjoy (and please don’t try to parkour-ify your own kitty unless a cat-training pro is around)! [Tastefully Offensive]

Watch These 7 Kittens Move In Sync

Synchronized Kittens
Twinsies

I don’t know where these Maine Coon kittens came from or how they can manage to match their movements so closely. All I know is that they’re so mesmerized by whatever it is they’re staring at that I can’t decide whether to find it adorable or slightly creepy. Let’s go with adorable. [Tastefully Offensive]

The Daily Squee: Meet The Saddest Kitten Ever, Soon-To-Be Adorable Internet Star

Sad Kitty

This is the Saddest Kitten Ever, who has yet to be given an official stage name but will surely be the interwebs’ next favorite feline. Grumpy Cat may look cranky, but this kitty looks downright sad. Her human, Ashley Herring, assures us that Saddest Kitten Ever has a wonderful life of kitty bliss, but that doesn’t seem to change her permanently pouty expression. Overnight stardom has fallen into the sad kitten’s lap, with over 370,000 views of her picture on Imgur in just three days. Are those dollar signs I see in those big blue sad eyes? It’s only a matter of time before the interviews with Anderson Cooper and customized t-shirts with this kitty’s face on them turn up. Herring is asking fans for stage name ideas, and names like Bojangles, Nugget, Meowancholia, and Happy have been suggested so far. Meh, I think we can come up with something cuter than that. Watch out celebrity cats, you have some competition! [Refinery 29; Daily Mail UK]
