5 Reasons Kittens Love Christmas

5 Reasons Kittens Love Christmas

You think you love Christmas? Check your elf hat at the door. Your excitement is only a fraction of what cats across the world are feeling. This year, I’ve been lucky enough to watch two kittens experiencing Christmas for the first time and I’m a little jealous of all the fun they’re having. Here are five reasons cats are seriously stoked about Christmas… Keep reading »

If there’s one thing that I know about cats it’s that they LOVE to wear things on their heads. That’s why you see so many cats being walked down the street wearing hats. In keeping with the Christmas*** spirit, Etsy user NotSoKittyShop has crafted a special holiday fascinator made from styrofoam balls and glitter to deck your cat in festive cheer just like you deck your halls! The fascinator features 10 faux ornaments which hang from kitty’s head, spreading joy to the world. Or just your living room. Doesn’t this little guy look full of joy? [Etsy.com/NotSoKittyShop]

*** If you have a Jewish, Muslim or Hindu cat or a cat who appreciates astronomy, you can instead buy your kitty a solar system fascinator.

Keeping Cats As Pets Began 5,000 Years Ago

lil bub

It might be hard to believe, but cats weren’t always domesticated pets. Once upon a time, someone actually invited these tyrants into the house and the rest, as they say, is history.

According to recent findings, the first wild cat (or what we now call a stray) began hanging out with humans maybe over 5,000 years ago. While excavating a Stone Age village in China, researchers have found the earliest evidence of cats and humans — their first step in becoming the pets (and Internet stars) we love today. Baby Jesus Nativity Scene Is Taken Over By Cats

Gold, frankincense, myrrh … and kitties? A snuggly bunch of feral cats have taken over a nativity scene in Brooklyn, laying in the manger between Mary and Joseph like they belong there instead of baby Jesus. The two sisters who display the nativity every year told People magazine that the kitties always knock Jesus off his bed of hay. What would you expect? They’re cats. That’s their hay now. But in all seriously, this gives me a big case of the Awwwwwws. Nothing says the Christmas spirit quite like giving a warm, dry place to sleep for some homeless animals. I think Jesus would approve. “You Shall Not Pass, Dog” Captures The Best Of Cat Vs. Dog Dynamics

You Shall Not Pass, Dog!

Pets! They’re weird. Weirdest of all, perhaps, is the unspoken dynamic between cats and dogs. Believed to despise one another, so much so that there is an animated movie about it (and a sequel!), it’s really much less of an outright hatred and more just an implied narrative of canine fear. Most cats don’t even do anything; dogs are just inherently terrified of them. Sittin’ at the top of the stairs, at the end of the hallway, on the kitchen counter … wherever cats may be, dogs refuse to pass them. The fear seems unfounded until the dogs are actually coaxed into moving — then you see that a cat’s strongest instinct, its most base pleasure of all, is to snag a dog’s tail in passing. Woof! I submit as proof this excellent compilation, entitled “You Shall Not Pass, Dog.” It is just over 3 glorious minutes of silly dogs with the fear of God in ‘em as they attempt, and fail, to venture past sitting cats. All Kitty Litter Commercials Should Star The Poopy Cat Dolls

Do You Want My Purr Purr?

Is there a word in the English language to describe when advertising is so delightful you don’t even mind that it’s advertising? Because that’s the word I need for this Poopy Cat commercial, a Dutch subscription service for disposable cat litter boxes. (Um, brilliant, if environmentally unfriendly, idea, right?) Introducing the Poopy Cat Dolls, a sassy group of singing pussycats that put Nicole Scherzinger to shame. The Poopy Cat Dolls should sing in all kitty litter commercials, and cat food commercials, and heck, just replace the Pussycat Dolls entirely. Rrrrow! [Laughing Squid]

Life Dream Status: A Giant Cat Couch For Humans

OK, you guys, the good news is that this giant cat couch exists. The bad news is that it exists as part of an art installation and isn’t currently for sale to the public. Sigh. I might need to buy, like, 500 pounds of fluffy cotton and 100 yards of furry fabric and just attempt to make my own, because now that I know I could be watching Netflix while lying in the lap of a gigantic cat, my life won’t be complete until I make it happen. Cat Heaven Island Is Exactly What It Sounds Like

In Japan, there is an island of fairytale dreams called Tashirojama, better known as Cat Heaven Island. In this magical land, cats outnumber humans. Tashirojama has about 100 human residents, and many of them care for the kitties who make their homes all over the island. It is said on the island that giving the cats a helping hand brings good luck and wealth. The cats hang out in backyards, chill in the streets, and run free on the beach like wild horses do in Nicholas Sparks movies. I want to go to there. But seriously. This place looks like a dream come true. Free cuddles from kittens all day? Sign me up! Photographer Fubirai documents Tashirojama’s adorable feline residents, so head to his website if you’re looking for more! [Huffington PostFubiraiSo Bad So Good]
