This 22-Pound Cat Trapped His Family In A Room And Forced Them To Call 911

Look closely. That innocuous image of feline innocence is actually a scary cat-beast ready to attack at any moment. Or something like that. On Sunday night, Lux the cat had his owners trapped in a room in their own home, fearing for their safety. He attacked and scratched the seven-month-old son of his owners, Lee Palmer and Teresa Barker, after the baby pulled Lux’s tail. In reaction, Palmer kicked Lux.

The 22-pound Himalayan went haywire. Lux wouldn’t relent until the whole family, including their pet dog, was barricaded in a bedroom, calling 911, and prompting local news headlines like “family rescued from pet cat.” Keep reading »

Be My Boyfriend: Jon Boyer, The Hunky Cop Who Rescues Cats

Dear Officer Boyer,

May I call you Jon, I mean, unless we’re role-playing or something? Awesome. Jon, where have you been all my life? Or, rather, where have I been that I’m just learning about you now? I’m just one of many women who have been wooed by your reputation for rescuing and adopting the four-legged creatures that you encounter in the line of duty. Last May, a picture of you cuddling a kitten you had rescued and decided to adopt was posted on the Facebook page for a local animal shelter in Baltimore, where you live and serve. Keen-eyed women immediately noticed your rugged good looks and inquired about your relationship status — single after a recent breakup, woohoo! — but you clearly had more important things than dating on your mind. Like starring in an anti-animal abuse campaign called “Show Your Soft Side,” which got you even more attention from women. And being declared one of 2013′s Hottest Cat Guys! Hey, brawny dudes with hearts of gold are hard to come by these days! All the attention led you to start your own fan page, I Love Jon Boyer, but, true to your kindhearted nature, this isn’t a vanity project. I love the fact that you post listings for animals that need to be adopted on your page. Using your good looks to do good deeds just makes you even hotter, Jon. Keep reading »

Watch This Kitten Wiggle Her Ears While Being Bottle-Fed

Look at those little ears!

Meet Polly, a two-week-old kitten who wiggles her ears as she drinks from a bottle. It’s even more adorable than it sounds.

Depressed? Blame It On Your Cat

I’ve never liked cats. I know this is an unpopular point of view, but the heart wants what the heart wants. And this heart wants everything of the feline persuasion to stay away from her. It’s the allergies, but also, I just don’t like the way they look at me. Should you want to join me in the pursuit of catless-ness, you might be interested to know that new research published in the PLOS ONE journal discovered a link between cat bites and depression. This Guy Spent Thousands Turning His House Into A Playground For His Cats, And You Can Too

Do you love your cats? Do you also have $35,000 to spare? A California man did, and he used it to turn his home into a live-in playground for his 18 cats. The house includes wall ledges, ramps, and custom tunnels all specially designed for his kitties. The home also has a spiral feline “staircase” and a custom ventilation system to keep the air clean. He wanted his cats to experience daily adventures without having to go outdoors, and paired with the cheerful colors used to decorate the house, the place is basically a kitten’s version of Disneyworld. Check out the full gallery here, and don’t worry – just giving your cat the occasional treat and pat on the head is also considered good cat parenting. Cat Curling Would Make The Olympics Way More Watchable

What Is Curling, Anyway?

An oldie but a goodie: this is from the 2006 Torino Olympics, when the American kittehs bested the Danish kittehs on the ice. (I think.) The Olympics would be much more watchable if cat curling was an actual sport, don’t you agree? [YouTube]

It’s too cute, I can’t handle it: the Animal Rescue League of Berks County, Pennsylvania, invites children in from first through eighth grade to visit the shelter and read to the rescue cats who live there. The kids get to practice their reading skills, while the cats feel a sense of comfort from the rhythmic sound of a human voice. The program was started by an employee of the rescue league whose 10-year-old son was struggling to read. Once she saw easily he read surrounded by kitties in the shelter adoption room, she implemented the program with other classes. These days, everyone from homeschooled kids to parents of autistic children to Girl Scout troops participate. Everybody wins, and as the series on snapshots (like the one above) on Love Meow shows, nothing makes for a cuter set of pictures. How many little ones do you think go home begging Mom to adopt a stray? [22 WordsLove Meow]

The Ghosts Of Valentine’s Day Past: In Which Ami Cohabitates With Seven Cats

Whether you’re currently single or coupled up, it’s always interesting to ponder how different your life might look if you’d made different relationship choices along the way. What if you’d stayed with the wrong guy, settled for the good-enough guy, gone on one date instead of another, or said “yes” instead of “no” (or vice versa) at a crucial romantic juncture? In honor of this month’s lovey-dovey holiday, we’re taking you on a tour or our Ghosts Of Valentine’s Day Past — exploring the strange, sad, and silly possibilities of our romantic lives that, for whatever reason, weren’t meant to be. Here’s Ami’s story…

When I was 13, I fell in love for the first time. Like, sleep outside so I could stargaze and stay up all night writing tortured poetry in love. His name was Jeremy and we met backstage on the set of “West Side Story,” a community theater play I was in with his older brother. Two star-crossed lovers from rival high schools. Once I got up the nerve to talk to the cute guy with the long-brown hair and the baja hoodie, I learned that in his spare time he liked to played the guitar and smoke pot. During our courtship, he made me a mix tape featuring his favorite tunes from The Cure, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and of course, the song “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam. It was love at first site, as we labeled it, and we often talked about running away and getting married … if only we had drivers licenses. But there was just one problem: his cat and my allergies were not compatible. That, and the fact that he cheated on me with a girl named Amy (the more common spelling) and broke my heart. But mostly, the cat. In my alternate universe Valentine’s Day, Jeremy and I are still together and here’s what we’re up to… Keep reading »

“The Notebook” Recreated By Kittens Is Almost As Good As The Ryan Gosling Version

let's be birds!
Who needs human love when you have cats!?

“The Notebook” may be a favorite this time of year, but after 10 years (yes, 10!), it’s due for an upgrade. Like, say, kittens recreating its greatest moments. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams may be easy on the eyes, but I guarantee that this feline version of the film will leave you much happier than the end of the original movie. Meow! [Laughing Squid]
