Those little tramps are at it again. The nefarious-cookie sellers are trying to pull a fast one on us! The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has launched an official inquiry on the Girl Scouts out of concern that scouting materials contain links to other groups like Oxfam, the Sierra Club, and Doctors Without Borders, which support family planning and contraception. Apparently the connection here is that some Girl Scout troops are held in Catholic churches. Mind you, Oxfam works to end world poverty, the Sierra Club is an environmental organization, and Doctors Without Borders supports medical professionals in conflict zones. Nevertheless, those tenuous links to the Girl Scouts are “problematic,” say the bishops.

Sigh. Can’t we just leave the poor Girl Scouts alone already? [New York Times] Keep reading »

Catholic School Rejects Preschooler Over Lesbian Parents

We are so happy people are protesting this bigotry: A nursery school at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School, in Boulder, Colorado, will not admit one of their preschoolers because the child’s parents are lesbians. The Archdiocese of Denver issued a statement about the refusal, which said:

“To preserve the mission of our schools, and to respect the faith of wider Catholic community, we expect all families who enroll students to live in accord with Catholic teaching. Parents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment.”

Protesters who have stood outside the church during a recent Mass disagree. Protester Joellen Radestorf told ABC7 News in Denver that the school is not strict about which parents are divorced or which ones use birth control —both of which are against the religion‘s teachings — and added, “God and Jesus would not allow discrimination in that way.” Let’s hope the little kids at preschool are too young to understand the bigotry that’s going on. Anne Hathaway Left The Catholic Church For Her Gay Brother

Anne Hathaway isn’t just a talented actress; she also sticks up for her fam “Sopranos”-style. The actress opened up to British GQ about how she and her family left the Catholic Church because the religion did not embrace her older brother, Michael, who is gay. “The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out,” Hathaway told the mag. “Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?”

Now that’s loyalty! Considering most actresses in Hollywood get their asses kissed if they, like, pose for photos at a charity event, it’s heartwarming to see someone actually take a stand for something important, you know? [NYMag.com] Keep reading »

No Celibacy For Married Anglican Priests Who Convert To Catholicism

The Vatican announced last month a plan to make it easier for disillusioned Anglicans, who feel their church has become too liberal, to convert to Catholicism. The plan allows for Anglican priests, including those who are married, to also convert to Catholicism. This stirred speculation that the age-old rule of celibacy for Catholic priests could be rescinded. Not so, says the Vatican. The married priests will join the Personal Ordinariates, the structure set up for ex-Anglicans. They won’t have to be celibate, but unmarried priests who convert to Catholicism and are ordained will have to adhere to the celibacy rule. Only celibate men will be admitted to the Roman Catholic priesthood, but the admission of married Anglican priests will be on a case-by-case basis decided on by the pope. Former Anglican bishops, including married ones, will be able to lead groups of former Anglicans within the Catholic Church, but the bishops will also have to be ordained within the Catholic priesthood. So, it seems the bishops will have to be celibate, even if they’re married, or choose not to be the ministers of their congregations. [Reuters] Keep reading »

Tony Blair’s Wife Tells All

Accidents happen, even to good Catholics like the former-Prime Minister of the U.K.’s wife Cherie Blair. Her hubby isn’t the only one getting political — in interviews and in her book, the longtime birth control advocate pushes for the Church to embrace contraception. But that’s not the only thing she’s been pushing… In her gossipy new autobiography, Speaking For Myself, she openly talks about her happy accident — their third child, Leo, who was the result of forgetting to pack birth control on a vacation. Whoopsies! She also reveals that she slept with Mr. Blair on their first date. Salacious! (And yet totally relatable.) While her critics are screaming TMI from her tell-all, we’d like to applaud her for telling it like it is and standing up for something millions of women depend on! [Daily Mail] Keep reading »

Mexico’s Sex Fair

Mexico City just held its 2008 Sex & Entertainment Fair, which isn’t all that exciting in itself– we have sex-industry trade shows galore in the U.S. — however, three out of every four Mexican citizens are also Roman Catholic. Not sure how religious figures feel about dildos and such. The fair debuted in 2004, and the number of attendees has more than doubled since then. Of the 117,000 people at this year’s show, which features 300,000 feet of lubricants, sex toys, and lingerie, 45 percent were women. Of course, there are detractors who believe the fair promotes promiscuity, but not that many people can be against it, as the fair pulled in almost $1 million in profits for the company which owns it.
