What’s not to love about Cate Blanchett? The Australian star of “Blue Jasmine” is awesomely gorgeous, and she’s totally killed it in every role she’s played, including Katherine Hepburn and Bob Dylan. She’s classy as hell, really chill (I’d assume), and wears the coolest clothes ever — which caused me massive stress in trying to narrow this list down to just ten looks. No wonder every designer is clamoring to dress her.
Cate Blanchett sure ain’t afraid of no freaky fashion, but what’s really almost miraculous about it is that, even at her strangest, the esteemed actress is very rarely a sartorial flop. This Balenciaga cape-over-frock look, for example? My initial reaction is to be like, “god, that’s weird,” but the longer I look at it, the more I’m convinced that Cate can take even the weirdest silhouette and turn it into something really, really convincing.
I hate to hate anything even remotely associated with the goddess Cate Blanchett, but this shiny, stiff-looking Armani Privé dress is testing the limits of her sartorial perfection. It’s like what an off-duty superhero would wear to a red carpet event, all latex-y and, like, “Hey, I may or may not be fighting crime and defending the city after dinner.” So it’s badass, of course, but is it cute? Do we like it? Does Cate get a free pass, just because she’s Cate? Probably.
I’m not crazy, right? This dress she’s wearing is totally reminiscent of Princess Leia’s gown from “Star Wars,” minus the shoulder details and open back. I mean, look at those drapey sleeves and that mock turtleneck. George Lucas would approve and, naturally, for this reason alone, I love it. [Photos: WENN]
What you are looking at right now is a fine example of Cate Blanchett‘s sartorial black magic: she can pull off anything, even (and perhaps especially) the most high-fashion, higher-risk of garments like this Proenza Schouler dress, and make it work. Seriously, the image depicts both a metal ladder and a man with a butterfly net covered in perforations (see: trypophobia), and I still think she looks amazing. That’s just unnatural.
Shockingly, it has come to my attention that the perpetually sleek Cate Blanchett has fallen victim to A Lot of Freakin’ Look. It’s certainly not the first time a celebrity has gone a little overboard, nor will it be the last, but Cate is usually so damn impeccable! Let’s break it down. The top: love, skirt: love — worn together, the otherwise awesome pieces synthesize into all kinds of patterns and stripes and not knowing where exactly to look. So while this isn’t necessarily a bad look, it is indeed a lot of it … but I would still steal that shirt right off her back any day. She won’t miss it.
