Tonight on “20/20,” Elizabeth Vargas will sit down with filmmaker Christie Callan-Jones, whose documentary “Cat Ladies” tells the stories of four cat-loving women, one of whom has 123 living in her house. Viewers will get to go inside the homes of these ultimate cat ladies and learn a little bit about their obsession. Callan-Jones says it’s more than simply caring for a few feline friends; the cats are often symptoms of or salves for other issues. As “Grey Gardens” — both the documentary and the HBO film — proved, crazy cat ladies make good cinema. Debuting this week at the Silverdocs film festival in Washington DC, a new documentary, called simply, “Cat Ladies” hopes to capitalize on the popularity and cultural interest in the strangely endearing stereotype of a woman gone mad. While the one-hour film, which follows four ladies with a #&@$%-ton of felines (one has 123!), is supposed to reveal a “sensitive and emotionally honest portrait of women whose lives and self-worth have become intractably linked to cats,” it’s hard not to laugh or cringe in disgust at some of the women’s antics.
