The Cannes Film Festival is where celebs are supposed to bring their A game. Not their A- game, but their A+ game. That’s because they’re not simply on the red carpet at some crappy Hollywood premiere — they’re on the world’s snotty stage! In France! France! And they’re competing against French and Italian starlets in the glamour game, too. As such, these girls have some really intense gown-age in tow — with everything from lacy cut outs, to feathers, to bright colors at their disposal. We survey the successes — and some of the Cannes chaff, after the jump.
These two! They’re at Cannes (of course) at the premiere of “The Paperboy,” starring Kidman, McConaughey and a delicate little flower known as Zac Efron. I like to imagine they’re having an “attractive-off” and Kidman is chiding McConaughey for wearing a shirt. Or maybe she’s asking him why he left his bongos at home. What do you think?
While we’ve been covering all of the fashion at Cannes, there seems to be a more unsavory undercurrent on the scene: in the 64 years of the festival, just one woman has claimed the most esteemed Palme d’Or award, and this year’s total lack of female directors in the awards’ lineup has sparked international backlash among feminists. Whether Cannes has provided warranted grounds for contention is still up in the air. A petition hosted on Change.org entitled “Cannes Film Festival: Where Are The Women Directors?” has garnered over 2,000 signees, with feminist icon Gloria Steinem, “The Vagina Monologues” playwright Eve Ensler, and award-winning Australian director Gillian Armstrong among them. However, last year’s nominations for the top prize featured four movies by women, while last month’s Tribeca Film Festival in Manhattan had a heavy female presence, with many of the event’s 90 films both focusing on female protagonists and directed by women. At the time, Daryl Wein, the director of “Lola Versus” starring Greta Gerwig, said, “It’s a moment happening now for women in film.” Keep reading »
Cheryl Cole, the most internationally recognized member of the British girl group Girls Aloud, is very beautiful and very stylish (if, at times, a bit overdone). This Stéphane Rolland Haute Couture gown she wore to Sunday’s premiere of “Amour” is, well, fundamentally perfect — it’s lovely and show-stopping without being too bombastic for her role at the occasion, like Eva Longoria’s endless Marchesa, which I found reprehensible (why, Eva?).
However, exponentially more reprehensible than Eva’s inappropriate train are Cheryl’s comments from just a few days ago regarding the future of the deservedly controversial Chris Brown. Keep reading »
Joshua Jackson should feel really good about being able to keep Diane Kruger on his arm. She is so pretty! And doesn’t she look absolutely stunning in this metallic Vivienne Westwood gown? And they look so in love, it’s gross. But uh, Joshua? Maybe you want to get a good shave?
Yesterday’s Cannes International Film Festival kickoff was rife with celebrities of every ilk, running the gamut from those whose various looks we await with bated breath (like the untouchable Marion Cotillard) to those who make us wonder why they’re even in attendance, let alone wearing an overblown dress with a ten-foot train (no thanks, Eva Longoria). The annual festival is synonymous, of course, with a particular brand of inimitable avant-garde chic — it’s impeccably artistic, breathtaking more often than not, and more than anything, distinctly European. For the past week, women’s media has pretty much been dominated by talk of Lena Dunham’s new show “Girls.” But newsflash! There’s other crap going on! Like the fact that this year’s prestigious Cannes Film Festival features absolutely zero films by women. That’s right: of the 23 films up for Cannes’ Very Important Palm D’Or Award, zero were made by women. And in the Un Certain Regard category — reserved for films made by up-and-coming young directors — only two were made by women.

Last night, the Cannes Film Festival concluded with the Robert DeNiro-helmed jury handing out the awards for the best movies and acting on display at the festival. And I am sensing a theme: apparently, the jury was all about films that mixed everyday stories with, well, the fate of the universe. The coveted Palme d’Or award—Cannes’ version of Best Picture Oscar—went to “Tree of Life,” the movie which follows a suburban Texas family in the 1950s through two generations (Brad Pitt is the dad, Sean Penn is his son) connecting them to the creation of the world and cosmos. Meanwhile, most people thought Tilda Swinton had the Best Actress award in the bag for “We Need To Talk About Kevin.” But she was upset by Kirsten Dunst, who stars in “Melancholia,” the story of a bride who begins to feel more and more disillusioned while, lightyears away, a planet threatens to collide with Earth.
