New Survey Illustrates What Different Countries Think About How Muslim Women Should Cover Up

  • Check out this interesting chart from the Pew Research Center illustrating the results of a new survey that asked respondents in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and other countries which woman “is dressed most appropriately.” The study found that participants preferred that women cover their hair, but not always their face. The King of Saudi Arabia declares women can vote. Read More »

A Saudi Arabian cleric raised eyebrows over his WTF suggestion on a TV program six months ago that baby girls should be covered head-to-toe in burqas to protect them from sexual assault. It is one thing to suggest, however ludicrously, that veiled women prevent men from being tempted to rape (because we know men are all rapists and must be thwarted at every turn, amirite?), though I obviously don’t agree with forcing or coercing women to wear the burqa. But the mere suggestion that little baby girls might be lascivious if they’re not completely covered? Now, that’s just disgusting. Sheikh Abdullah Daoud’s “burqas for babies” idea has been criticized by other Saudis, who say he is making the Islamic faith look bad. I’m inclined to agree! [Daily Mail UK]

The Mindy Project

It’s not easy to make offensive jokes about ignorance. One person’s ignorant joke can be another person’s joke about ignorance and even if your comedy has the best of intentions, it’s frequently misunderstood.  Offensive humor is tricky to balance, but smart humorists can do it well.

I believe Mindy Kaling from “The Office” is extremely smart and that she deserves all the success she’s garnered from her book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and her upcoming sitcom “The Mindy Project.” But after watching the pilot for “The Mindy Project,” which is airing on Hulu Plus, I have to say I was disappointed about several squicky jokes made about race. NOTE: We had to take the photo in question down (image rights issue) but you can see it here and continue to discuss. Sowwy!

Kim Kardashian isn’t known for covering up, so this photograph of her trying on a burqa in Dubai is … weird … to say the least. There’s at least one other photo of Kim and her mom Kris Jenner walking down a Dubai street while Kris is wearing a veil, which I assume was her trying to be respectful of Muslim customs. (However, Dubai is a very modern city and other women in the photograph, including Kim, aren’t veiled.) Yet I feel sort of uncomfortable about Kim trying on a burqa — I assume “for fun” — when the face-covering veil is forced on women in other parts of the world, like Afghanistan. Maybe I’m overthinking this, though. What do you think? [Celebuzz Keep reading »
