Kim Kardashian isn’t known for covering up, so this photograph of her trying on a burqa in Dubai is … weird … to say the least. There’s at least one other photo of Kim and her mom Kris Jenner walking down a Dubai street while Kris is wearing a veil, which I assume was her trying to be respectful of Muslim customs. (However, Dubai is a very modern city and other women in the photograph, including Kim, aren’t veiled.) Yet I feel sort of uncomfortable about Kim trying on a burqa — I assume “for fun” — when the face-covering veil is forced on women in other parts of the world, like Afghanistan. Today’s Lady News: Two Muslim Women Fined In Belgium For Wearing The Veil

  • Two Belgian teenage girls, ages 16 and 17, have been fined $200 each for wearing face-covering Muslim veils in public. It has been illegal to wear a niqab or burqa veil in public in Belgium since July. However, their fines have been paid off by a French businessman who believes the women should express their religion however they so choose. [Telegraph UK, International Business Times]
  • A former sheriff in Missouri has plead guilty to forcing women to expose their breasts to him during searches. [Christian Science Monitor]
  • Will the rumored “Sex and the City” prequel movie/TV show/whatever-it-is-going-to-be keep the characters’ abortions in the plotlines? On the TV series, in the episode when Miranda is initially considering having an abortion, Carrie confessed to terminating a pregnancy when she first moved to New York. Today’s Lady News: Italy Wants To Ban The Burqa

  • It will be illegal to wear the burqa and other face-covering Muslim veils in public if a new bill can get the support of Italy’s Parliament. A draft version of the law has already been approved. Face-covering Muslim veils have already been banned in France and Belgium. [BBC]

France’s Ban On Face-Covering Muslim Veils Goes Into Effect

France‘s ban on face-covering Muslim veils, like the niqab and the burqa, took effect yesterday. French citizens and tourists alike will be fined $215 for covering their faces in public or they must attend a class on French citizenship. Anyone who forced a woman to wear a veil in public faces a year in prison and a $43,000 fine — and fines are steeper if the person being forced to wear a veil is a minor. Muslim students are already banned from wearing headscarves in classrooms.

At least two women were taken in by police yesterday for daring to cover their faces with Islamic veils in public and a 27-year-old woman received the country’s first-ever fine for wearing a veil. Keep reading »

French Lady Not Sorry For Her “Burqa Rage” And Ripping The Veil Off A Muslim Woman

“Burqa rage.” Never heard of it before? Me neither. Women being forced to wear burqas does makes me upset. But a 63-year-old French woman, known only as Marlene, took things too far when she attacked a woman who chose to wear a body-covering veil while furniture shopping in a Paris suburb. When Marlene saw the victim, known only as Shaika, 26, perusing a department store in a burqa, she asked the Muslim woman to disrobe. “I told her to take off the veil she had on her face,” she said. “I grabbed and pulled it.” Shaika refused to remove her burqa and Marlene allegedly began hitting her, successfully pulling off the veil and biting Shaika’s hand in the process. “Now I can see your face,” she allegedly shouted. Today’s Lady News: France To Fine Women Who Wear Face-Covering Veils In Public

  • Today, the French government passed a bill to fine a woman $185 if she wears a face-covering veil in public. French President Nicolas Sarkozy has said the fine would send a message that it is wrong for women to cover their faces in public, such as with a burqa or niqab. But critics say the “burqa ban” is anti-Muslim and fans the flames of racial tension. [Washington Post]
  • Parents took to the school board meeting of Hillsborough County, Florida, yesterday to debate whether Bellamy Elementary in Tampa was right to ask a mother not to breastfeed her 2-year-old in the school lobby, while waiting for her child. Florida law says mothers can breastfeed their children in public, but the school says it needs to maintain order. [St. Petersburg Times]
  • Louisiana’s state senate passed a bill yesterday requiring that a women receives an ultrasound before she has an abortion and that she hears an explanation of the fetus’ development. The original bill was amended to allow women to decline to view the ultrasound screen. The bill now heads to Louisiana’s House. [NOLA.com]

Today’s Lady News: French Woman Flies Into A “Burqa Rage”

  • This weekend, a 60-year-old lawyer in Trignac, France, attacked a fellow shopper, a 26-year-old Muslim woman, and ripped her body-covering veil off. Police say the woman made “snide remarks about her black burqa” before she flew into her “burqa rage” and ripped the veil off. The lawyer and her daughter then began physically fighting with the woman before all three were arrested. Currently, France is considering a ban on all body-covering veils for women, which has fanned the flames of racial tensions in the country. [Telegraph UK]
  • A woman in Saudi Arabia beat up a religious policeman — or “virtue cop” — who stopped her in an amusement park for walking with a male friend. In Saudi Arabia, unmarried men and women are forbidden from socializing and are policed by the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice. Experts say the woman can now expect a prison term, lashing or both. [Daily Mail UK]

Today’s Lady News: France May Not Ban The Burqa After All

  • A committee in France’s Parliament will stop short of recommending a ban on Muslim women wearing burqas at all places in France. Instead, the committee will only suggest body-covering veils be banned in public facilities, like on public transport or in hospitals. Muslim students have already been banned from wearing headscarves in the classroom since 2004. [Wall Street Journal]
  • According to new data from the Guttmacher Institute, teen pregnancy rose three percent from 2005 to 2006. The increase was mostly concentrated among 18- and 19-year-olds. Overall, abortions among teenagers rose one percent as well. [Time]
  • Speaking of teen pregnancy, even though the entire story is completely untrue, Lifetime’s made-for-TV-movie “The Pregnancy Pact,” about a group of teenaged girls who decide to get knocked up together, was the highest-rated among women ages 18 to 34 since 1994. I actually couldn’t watch more than 30 minutes of it before I had to stop! [Variety]

French Fashion Police May Fine Women For Wearing Burqas

Whether or not you agree with Sarkozy’s so-called “Burqa Ban” in France (and judging from the comments on this post, you are a nation divided), anyone who’s ever felt demeaned for violating a dress code can relate to the idea that as a woman, being told what you can and can’t wear is oppressive, period. The latest strategy to enforce the controversial initiative will literally cost burqa wearers: The French government is voting on a proposal to not only ban burkas and niqabs, but to fine women who wear them €750, which is about $1090.00! We’ve already talked about how misguided this proposed ban is in the first place, but to echo Grazia.com writer Kate Faithfull’s sentiments: “The trouble is, if the government starts dictating what its people wear, where will they stop? And won’t passing a law that appears to directly attack Muslim beliefs just antagonize extremists?” [Grazia.com] Keep reading »
