The “Bruno” producers must have had a long chat with J.K. Rowling. How else could they have possibly guarded the secret perils and dangers faced by a not-terribly-bright gay Austrian fashion commentator? Whatever wizardry was conjured for the keeping of secrets, it worked. No one seemed to know anything about the upcoming movie release of “Bruno,” until his memorable entrance and landing at the MTV Movie Awards. They’re saying that family members wanted Michael to head to rehab because of an addiction to morphine and prescription pill. Bruno Opens Amsterdam’s First “Pink Light” Brothel
Visiting Amsterdam is a must for many college students hoping to legally smoke weed or patronize a prostitute. But the problem for some looking for good Dutch times is the exclusion of male prostitutes in the red light district. That all changed for a little while on Friday when Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s gay fashion reporter character alter ego, opened the first “pink light” brothel in Amsterdam ahead of the Dutch premiere of “Bruno.” “For too long, guys coming to Amsterdam from around the world have been forced to have sex with women,” Cohen said. “It gives me great pleasure to declare Amsterdam’s pink light district officially open for business.” Then, a dozen men wearing thongs stepped up to the windows of a three-story brothel. However, the men went behind the curtain once again, only to be replaced by the real red light prostitutes the moment Cohen drove away from the brothel. Bruno Gets Flack From Gay Rights Groups
Once again Bruno is in the hot seat, and this time we don’t mean Eminem’s face. “Bruno,” one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s many alter-egos, will make his big screen debut on July 10, but the film is already receiving non-fashion related critique. In the film/mockumentary, Cohen (aka Borat and Ali G) plays the-not-the-brightest-bulb-in-the-shed, homosexual Austrian fashion commentator Bruno. Though fans have eagerly waited for the films release for years, gay rights groups are not exactly chomping at the bit. In a recent New York Times article, Rashad Robinson, senior director of media programs for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation states, “Some people in our community may like this movie, but many are not going to be OK with it…Sacha Baron Cohen’s well-meaning attempt at satire is problematic in many places and outright offensive in others.” Translation: people won’t understand Bruno is a joke.
