Earlier this month, Lizzy, a seven-year-old corgi, got fired from a West End production of “The Audience” starring Helen Mirren after she failed to make her mark in “16 consecutive preview performance nights.” She was replaced by a younger rival named Coco. (The corgi, I mean, not Helen Mirren.)

This week, on the other side of the pond, another four-legged Broadway star got the axe. Keep reading »

Will “Pushing Daisies” Head To Broadway?

Bryan Fuller‘s been dropping hints of upcoming Pushing Daisies news for the past few months, and we have been clawing at our computer screens for just as long screaming “TELL US!” The “Pushing Daisies,” “Dead Like Me,” and “Mockingbird Lane” producer swore it had nothing to do with a return of the cancelled-too-soon show to television, or of a jump to the big screen. So what does that leave? Broadway, apparently!

Fuller revealed this little tidbit in a recent interview with TV-scooper extradordinaire Michael Ausiello while promoting his upcoming television reboot of “Mockingbird Lane.”

According to Fuller–who holds that it’s too soon to reveal anything too concrete, as these things have a way of changing through the stages of development–the project is working to reunite as much of the “Pushing Daisies” cast as possible. Read more…

Neil Patrick Harris Rocks The 2011 Tony Awards

I would like to make a case for Neil Patrick Harris hosting, well, every awards show ever. Last night, he helmed the 2011 Tony Awards. Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s “Book Of Mormon” cleaned up, taking home nine awards over the course of the night—but that wasn’t the spectacular part. No, the highlight was Neil’s awesome musical numbers. Above, catch the opening song, in which Neil hilariously welcomes straight people to the theater. “Because Broadway has never been broader/ It’s not just for gays anymore,” he sings before busting out the best line ever, “We’re asking every hetero to get to know us better-o.” The whole number turned out awesome aside from Brooke Shields‘ strange flub.

Oh, and if you didn’t watch the full show, no worries—at the end, Neil did an awesome rap re-capping all the winners and events of the night. Watch it after the jump. Keep reading »

Kirstie Alley Gets Over Fear Of Lifts, Eyes Broadway

“I was offered a Broadway play. I’m not going to do it, because my friends said, `Don’t do one if you can’t get a Tony!’  But I am tempted … [In the past, lifts] would have freaked me out. I have this bizarre thing with height. I’m 5 foot 8, and I have this phobia. When I did ‘Look Who’s Talking’ with John Travolta, I weighed 114 pounds, and the director goes, `John, pick her up and take her to the bedroom.’ I’m like, no! I’m 5 feet 8! It’s going to be too much. I only think 5 foot 1 girls can fly around.”

Kirstie Alley reveals that after “Dancing with the Stars” wraps, she may well be headed to the stage. Kirstie, we’d love to see you on the Great White Way. Speaking of “DWTS,” we’ll find out whether Kirstie, Chelsea Kane, or Hines Ward wins tonight. Kirstie is the long shot, but I am totally proud of her for facing her fear and doing so many freaking lifts in her routine last night. No one puts Kirstie in the corner. Oprah Headed To Broadway, HBO

What will Oprah do with her days once her talk show ends? She divulged to The Chicago Tribune that, in addition to running her own network, she is planning to head to Broadway. As in, for real deal you’ll be able to see her on the stage soon. “I have a stack of plays in my bag right now that I am reading,” she said. “And just this past weekend, I was in New York meeting with producers. We were just talking about what would be the best route to take. But yes, this is really going to happen. ” Did you hear that? That was the sound of every high-powered theater producer in Manhattan scrambling to bow down at Oprah’s feet.

Acting is apparently high on the Big O’s to-do list. Keep reading »

Julie Taymor No Longer Directing “Spider-Man: The Musical”

Making fun of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”—the musical version of the classic comic book tale that, at $65 million, is the most expensive production in Broadway history—has become something of a blood sport here in New York. And this week brings the news that the play—which has injured multiple cast members and been almost universally panned by test audiences—is shutting down for several weeks for a major overhaul. Apparently, visionary director Julie Taymor is no longer sitting in the director’s chair. It’s unclear whether she quit in protest or was fired. “Taymor is out. She’s left the building,” a source said. Keep reading »

Katie Holmes And Chloe Sevigny To Be Broadway Buds

“Extremeties” may not be slated to open for at least a year, but I would recommend getting a ticket to the Broadway play now. Katie Holmes is being courted for the play about a woman who seeks revenge on an attempted rapist with the help of her two roommates. And it looks like Chloe Sevigny may be co-starring with her. “I was reading it and I’m kind of seeing how the cast is gonna pan out,” Chloe tells Entertainment Weekly. “I know the director is great but I feel like the cast has gotta be real strong. And it’s such a commitment.” As for the attempted rapist, producers were talking to Matt Dillon but he had a timing conflict. Guess we’ll have to see who takes over for him. Strangely, I can totally see Katie and Chloe becoming good friends. After all, Katie’s a Scientologist and Chloe has played a polygamist Mormon for the past few years. So they have the religious cult connection, if nothing else. Oh, and they’re both such fashion plates. [NY Times, Huffington Post] Keep reading »
