Julie Taymor No Longer Directing “Spider-Man: The Musical”

Making fun of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”—the musical version of the classic comic book tale that, at $65 million, is the most expensive production in Broadway history—has become something of a blood sport here in New York. And this week brings the news that the play—which has injured multiple cast members and been almost universally panned by test audiences—is shutting down for several weeks for a major overhaul. Apparently, visionary director Julie Taymor is no longer sitting in the director’s chair. It’s unclear whether she quit in protest or was fired. “Taymor is out. She’s left the building,” a source said. Keep reading »

Katie Holmes And Chloe Sevigny To Be Broadway Buds

“Extremeties” may not be slated to open for at least a year, but I would recommend getting a ticket to the Broadway play now. Katie Holmes is being courted for the play about a woman who seeks revenge on an attempted rapist with the help of her two roommates. And it looks like Chloe Sevigny may be co-starring with her. “I was reading it and I’m kind of seeing how the cast is gonna pan out,” Chloe tells Entertainment Weekly. “I know the director is great but I feel like the cast has gotta be real strong. And it’s such a commitment.” As for the attempted rapist, producers were talking to Matt Dillon but he had a timing conflict. Guess we’ll have to see who takes over for him. Strangely, I can totally see Katie and Chloe becoming good friends. After all, Katie’s a Scientologist and Chloe has played a polygamist Mormon for the past few years. So they have the religious cult connection, if nothing else. Oh, and they’re both such fashion plates. [NY Times, Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Paul Reubens Brings Pee-Wee Herman To Broadway

In case you haven’t heard, “The Pee-wee Herman Show” opened on Broadway this week and it is offering up all the playhouse shenanigans you can handle. Tucked into the realm of nostalgia, this play is essentially a 90-minute version of Paul Reubens’ TV show that “Playhouse” fans have been missing for decades. All the originals are back, including Magic Screen, Mailman Mike, Pterri, and furniture favorite Chairy. To keep up with modern times, the play also introduces a few new elements, including a talking ShamWow! and sly mentions of Reubens indecent exposure arrest. While the secret word of “The Pee-wee Herman Show” might be “fun,” not all the critics agree. See what some of them have to say after the jump. Keep reading »

Jenna Jameson On Broadway?

Over the past few years, many a Hollywood actor has done a Broadway play—Katie Holmes, Laurence Fishburne, Claire Danes, Daniel Radcliffe, Terrence Howard, Laura Linney. And now we may be adding another name to this list of serious thespians: Jenna Jameson. Yep, the world’s most famous porn star (or is that Ron Jeremy?) is in negotiations to play bar owner Justice in the Broadway hit “Rock of Ages.” Keep reading »

Cop Her Style: Morticia Adams’ Nails

Macabre though it may sound to call Morticia Adams a major fashion inspiration, that bitch was fierce. And her return to pop culture in “The Adams Family” musical has brought with it a whole new way to emulate Mama Adams. Essie has teamed up with the production to release three Morticia-inspired nail polish colors for $30. So next time you’re deciding between Ballet Slippers and Wedding Bells for your fingers, take a trip to the dark side with Bone Chilling White, Blood Curdling Red or Midnight Tango, instead. It’s what Morticia would want. [Beauty Blogging Junkie] Keep reading »

The Blind And Deaf Don’t Want To See (Or Hear) Abigail Breslin As Helen Keller

The blind and deaf communities are not rejoicing after the announcement that Abigail Breslin has signed on to play Helen Keller in the upcoming Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker.” Why? Simply put, she’s not blind or deaf. Advocacy groups feel strongly that the production should consider using an actress from the blind or deaf community because of the larger human and artistic issues at stake. But the producers of the show are not interested in humanity. They are interested in ticket sales—they feel that their primary responsibility is to ensure the commercial success of the production, and in this economy it could take an actual miracle worker to have a wildly successful show without a star. But if it’s any consolation … they will try their best to find a blind or deaf understudy for the part. So what do you think? Is it wrong for Abigail Breslin to land the role of Helen Keller? Scarlett Johansson Taking Over Broadway, The World

There was a time when I adored Scarlett Johansson. Actually, I still adore her—but her overachieving is starting to drive me nuts. Call it a case of Failed Potential Syndrome, but I’m getting sick of her making myself and, oh, every other woman in the world look like chopped liver. In addition to being a big ol’ movie star, a songstress with two albums under her belt, a model with multiple ad campaigns, a shoe designer, the wife of Ryan Reynolds and the woman who won the accolade “Sexiest Woman Alive,” there’s one more arena Scarlett is dipping her toes into. In December, she’ll be making her Broadway debut, starring in Arthur Miller’s classic “A View From the Bridge,” opposite Liev Schreiber. In the play, she’ll be a 17-year-old whose older cousin (Schreiber) is obsessed with her, and when she falls for another guy goes looney tunes. People are predicting that the 14-week run will sell out in minutes. So, Scarlett, what’s next? Want to write a book or 20? And produce and direct? Or do a hard-hitting reality TV series a la Jessica Simpson’s the “Price of Beauty.” Or you could run for office. Wouldn’t want to turn 25 without ruling the world first. Bitch. “Clueless” And Other Chick-Flicks Heading To Broadway

Clueless,” the ’90s chick-flick which never gets old, taught every tween girl the word ‘sporadic.’ Now, it’s on its way to becoming a Broadway musical. At the end of August, a developmental staging will be running for a week. If all goes well, the production could be headed to the Great White Way. Wait, isn’t Alicia Silverstone working on another Broadway project? Please, please tell us that she’ll be reprising the role of Cher! [Variety]
