No Blood Sucking For You Until You Brush Your Teeth!

Holy “Twilight“-ization of pop culture, Edward Cullen! Vampires are used to sell everything nowadays — even teeth-cleaning. The UK’s National Health Service debuted a bodice-heaving, undead-themed commercial to lure toothy British dudes to the dentist. (According to Yahoo, 16- to 34-year-old men “are notoriously lax about their dental appointments.” Ack! These guys should come with warning labels.) As much as I think vampires are over, this ad is super-clever, no? [Yahoo] Keep reading »

Meet The Black Arrow, A Lady Superhero Who Saves Abused Pets

I love a superheroine as much as the next feminist, especially one who loves the fuzzy am-i-nals as much as I do. Meet “Black Arrow,” an anonymous British woman who fights evil in the form of people who abuse their pets. “I make sure people aren’t abusing their animals,” Black Arrow told The Sun newspaper. “I serve justice to those who deserve it. We stand for those who cannot, because we can.” (Unfortunately, the tabloid-eriffic Sun didn’t get a single detail on just how Black Arrow does this.) For six years, the London lass has stuck up for animals who are abused — presumably without crassly objectifying women in the process. You hear that, PETA? Mom Wants Mentally Challenged Daughter Sterilized

Here’s a sticky wicket for you: the mother of a 21-year-old mentally challenged woman in Britain is asking a court for permission to sterilize her daughter so she will not continue getting pregnant. The daughter, who is referred to in court as P to protect her anonymity, already has two young children who are being raised by P’s mother, Mrs. P, who lives with them. However, Mrs. P said she cannot financially support a larger family and that when she took her daughter to a family planning clinic, she refused to get a contraceptive injection (Depo Provera). As Mrs. P described it, if P were to become pregnant again, Mrs. P would put the baby up for adoption. The nature of P’s mental difficulties are not explained by the Guardian, but Mrs. P told the court that P does not seem to understand the gravity of the situation. “I tried to explain that any future babies will go to a new mum and dad,” Mrs. P said. “She doesn’t understand that she won’t ever see them again. She says, ‘I’m the mummy’. She doesn’t understand they will get a new mum.”

Mrs. P continued, “I want the best for my daughter. We are supporting and helping her, bringing up her children and keeping them together as family unit. Obviously we can’t carry on supporting more and more children. She doesn’t see anything wrong in her behavior.” The judge handling the case, however, said that expert evidence was not available to make a judgment and he declined to rule on an “extremely serious and important” issue without it. Rich Lady’s Jokes About Cutting Back Turn Out Not To Be So Funny To Not-Rich People

Rich people are having a hard time, y’all! Cutting back on helicopter rides. Re-soling shoes instead of buying new pairs. No new clothes, handbags or makeup. It utter cruelty is what it is! These are the tongue-in-cheek gripes of Lisa Unwin, who blogged anonymously at a blog called Austerity Mum about cutting back on expenses with her husband, Ashley Unwin, a honcho at PricewaterhouseCoopers in London. The 44-year-old former Deloitte communications director, who now is a stay-at-home mom, blogged jokingly about downgrading the family vacation from the Maldives to Morocco and her hubby’s disdain for Prada shirts. According to the blog This Is London, Lisa Unwin referred also to her two children as “the diva in waiting” and “the smallest man with the biggest attitude” — charming! — and told readers the Unwin’s new Georgian-style home in east London cost “squillions.” Keep reading »

There’s A Show Called “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” About Gyspy Teen Brides

Don’t let anyone tell you reality TV shows are a scourge on American television. We may have “16 & Pregnant” and “Jersey Shore,” but the UK has “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.” Apparently in its second year, “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” follows teen brides from Europe’s gypsy clans, the Romany and the Travellers. Generally speaking, gypsies tend to live nomadic lives and travel from place to place. Last night’s episode featured 17-year-old Josie and 19-year-old Swanley, who married in July only five months after they met. Had you pressed the “mute” button, however, it would be difficult to tell Josie and Swanley were having a gypsy wedding: she wore a fluffy white confection of a dress and a garter, her bridesmaids were decked out in Spanish-style fuchsia dresses, and a priest performed the ceremony in a church. (You can see some over-the-top wedding looks from stills from the first season of “My Bit Fat Gypsy Wedding” on the Guardian’s web site.) And despite the stereotypes that gypsies live on the streets, or travel around in caravans, Josie lived inside a house. According to the Daily Mail UK, the most “gypsy” thing about the bride and groom on “My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding” is their unconventional-mixed-with-completely-conventional lifestyle. Keep reading »

British Couples Are Pissy Prince William And Kate Middleton Marrying On “Their” Weekend

Britain apparently has a nation full of Emn Haddad-Friedmans. Who is Emn Haddad-Friedman, you ask? She was the bride who planned her wedding for July 31st in Rhineback, New York, the same weekend as Chelsea Clinton. Weddings are stressful enough without worrying the Clintons stole your caterers! After Prince William announced his engagement to longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton and set the wedding date for April 29, 2011, couples across Britain who chose the same day started fretting. Some Brits are really nutso about the royal family and the prince’s wedding will be a big enough deal to skip weddings of people they actually, you know, know. Personally, I think if someone chooses to stand outside Westminster Abbey for a peek at Kate’s bridal gown, or parks in front of the telly for the televised ceremony, it’s one less d-bag’s dinner and drinks you need to pay for.
