Amy Woodruff, the hand-standing, breastfeeding mom pictured above is a blogger and a yogi who sells handmade goods on Etsy.  On her blog, Daughter of the Sun, she explains the circumstances of the photo, which she posted back in April:

“The truth is we were living on a small community in Hawaii where our land was clothing optional and yoga was/is a necessity! I was just doin’ my daily flow when the little sweet pea came to sneak a suckle. Papa had her out in the grass with him and she just couldn’t resist! This happens all the time by the way. When a breast is out and baby is around, they are going to try and get it anyway they can!” Keep reading »

Let The Breastfeeding Debates Begin! Selma Blair Breastfeeds In Public

Let The Breastfeeding Debates Begin! Selma Blair Breastfeeds In Public

Selma Blair breastfed her kid in a very public place: The Grove in Los Angeles. The Grove is a large outdoors Disney-esque shopping center. There’s even a trolley, on which Ms. Blair took her breastfeeding break.

There are two arguments that are inevitably going to come out of this:

  • Should women breastfeed in public?
  • Is her son too old to be breastfed? (He’s 2.)

I think it’s no one’s business and I think women should breastfeed their kids wherever they damn well please, because it’s not about showing boob, it’s about feeding their hungry kid. Read more on Evil Beet Gossip…

Watch The Showdown!

Lucy Eades was at the Burleson Recreation Center in Texas with her husband and 16-day-old infant waiting for their older daughter to finish her dance class when the baby became hungry. Eades breastfeeds and damn well knows that it is her legal right in Texas to breastfeed in a public place. An employee, however, did not feel as comfortable about Eades nursing her baby and decided to take the law into her own hands. Watch Eades tell this lady what’s up. DAMN STRAIGHT. [JezebelHuffington Post]

When Jackie Johnson-Smith’s child began to cry during dinner at Fong’s Pizza in Iowa, as you might expect, she fed the child and then exited the restaurant to avoid disturbing other diners. Johnson-Smith happens to breastfeed her baby, a practice that is often met with a lot of opposition in public. This time, however, she was thanked by her waitress in the form of a free pizza. • Police were called to a country club in White Plains, New York, earlier this month because the wife of a United Nations employee was breastfeeding the couple’s child during lunch. After the police arrived, the the couple was accused of terrorism. college baby

Naptime, feeding time … final exam? For Rebecca Mabrey, 25, of Jacksonville, Florida, that was how her and her 10-month-old baby’s afternoon was going to play out. But she was denied entrance to her final exam at Florida State College for bringing the kiddo along.

Mabrey argued that the exam fell right between her baby’s naptime and feeding time, so she felt that she had no choice but to bring her kid along to breastfeed. (Her husband was unable to watch the kid.) Florida State College did not agree: in an email, they told her children under 16 are not allowed on campus in order to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning. The school also added  they were not in violation of Florida’s maternal and infant health care law on breastfeeding because “this is not a prohibition of breastfeeding an infant.” In other words, Mabrey would be allowed to breastfeed her baby during the exam — if only kids were allowed.
