Today’s Lady News: FDA Claims Silicone Breast Implants Are Safe

  • The FDA has said silicone breast implants are safe and will stay on the market. However, the chief scientist dealing with implants admitted silicone implants are prone to ruptures, hardening, scarring and pain. Call me crazy, but that doesn’t sound particularly safe. Any Frisky readers with silicone implants want to weigh in? [New York Times]
  • This news should make you nervous: less than one-fifth of OB-GYNs will perform abortions, according to a study of 1,144 OB-GYNs. Nearly one hundred percent of the doctors surveyed said they’d had patients acquire about the procedure, however. Doctors most likely to refuse to provide an abortion were in the South or the Midwest. Interestingly, the most common reason doctors cited for not performing abortions wasn’t that they themselves opposed it, but that their hospital or group practice prohibited it. [Reuters]

iAugment App Shows How Your Boobs Would Look After Breast Implants

Wondering what would your breasts look like if they were bigger? There’s an app for that! iAugment is a Photoshop-style iPhone app that uses a 3D pic of your chest to show you how you’d look with bigger jigglies. iAugment allows you to view 17 different breast implant sizes — from “Blake Lively goes softcore” to “Sheyla Hershey circus boobs.” (Just kidding, they’re not really called that.) Created by plastic surgeon Elizabeth Kinsley from New Orleans, the iAugment app claims to help women decide if they really want a boob job. In reality, I think we all know that 14-year-old boys every adult man we know is going to digitally play with their lady friend’s boobs on iAugment ad nauseum. Amiright, boys? I step into the doctor’s office for a simple checkup and want the highest drugs possible to knock me out. But some women are getting breast implants and staying wide awake during the invasive surgery. Yowza! Said Kelly McCoy of Plano, Texas, a 23-year-old who had her B-cup breasts enlarged to C-cups, “Just the fact that I don’t have to undergo general anesthesia and the fact that I get to have a hand in seeing what the end result is going to be was like a huge selling point to me.” Apparently, not getting anesthesia is worth being able to give “final approval” to your plastic surgeon while you’re under the knife. I was 10 years old and all I wanted was boobies. I wanted them so badly I would buy balloons, fill them up with water and then stick them in my shirt. I wasn’t even developed enough to be wearing a bra, and sure enough I owned a “training bra” so my miraculous boobies, that my mom told me I would eventually grow, would have a place to go. Regardless of how badly I wanted breasts, I never ever stuffed my bra with toilet paper. I was smart enough, even at the age of 10, to know that stuffing my bra with paper towels not only looks fake, but it feels fake, and is humiliating if and when it falls out of your shirt. How do you possibly explain the tissues that are sticking out from your shirt? I figured you don’t. Not that anyone was touching my breasts at 10, but bumping into a boy in gym class with paper towel boobies was not something any boy would ever let me live down and definitely not a risk worth taking. But the girl I saw while I was out the other night, didn’t see anything wrong with stuffing her bra with paper towels.

Y’all need to start a club or something for victims of boob jobs gone wrong! On Friday, Daly filed a $300,000 malpractice lawsuit claiming Dr. Beverly Carl, of Bridgewater, PA, caused her “physical and emotional discomfort” when she gave her the wrong implants in a 2008 boob job.
