  • James Franco, artiste, reviewed “Breaking Dawn, Part One” for the fancypants literary magazine, The Paris Review, in which he says intellectual things like “Death comes pretty simply in the latest installment of Stephenie Meyer’s ‘Twilight’ series, too: the conceit allows the filmmakers to get away with murder, literally.” [The Paris Review]

“Absolutely, and as a pro-choice feminist, that was certainly my concern going in. No matter what, I would not have done this movie if it violated my own beliefs — I would have just walked away — so I had to find a way into it that was in line with my own thinking and yet not violating anyone else’s beliefs. So that was probably one of the initial challenges of it. I’ve also heard the comment that Bella is the one who’s constantly sacrificing, and wow, I never saw her as someone who sacrificed anything. If anyone’s sacrificing anything, it’s Edward, because from the very beginning — and certainly in this film — she knows what she wants and goes for it, hell or high water. She’s perhaps even a little selfish because she’s so driven for what she wants. ‘Okay, so I die and Edward’s broken-hearted for the rest of eternity? Well, tough luck, I’m going for it anyway.’ She’s very clear, and frankly, I see her as a very strong character. Do other people see her as someone who sacrifices? Absolutely, but I’ve never written her that way, and it actually took me by surprise.”

— “Breaking Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg (who also wrote the three previous flicks) on a debate in this film between the Cullens about whether to call the vampire-thing in Bella’s belly “baby” or a “fetus.” I have not seen this latest movie yet, but frankly I am surprised a fetus vs. baby debate would take place in a series with such a conservative reputation. However, I also wonder if it was calculated on Rosenberg’s part to call herself a “pro-choice feminist” here, since “Twilight” has lonnnng been bashed for being unfeminist. [NYmag.com]

Illinois Teenager Blames DUI Crash On Not Seeing “Twilight” Film

Thousands of dedicated fans turned out over the weekend to see “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1.” But for one teenage girl, the tragedy of not making it was a lot worse than choosing between Jacob or Edward.

Police in Illinois arrested an “extremely upset” 18-year-old girl on Saturday after she told authorities that she crashed her car because her boyfriend did not take her to see the new “Twilight” movie.

Cops found Olivia Christina Ornelas “extremely intoxicated” and after discovering her car, missing the front right tire and spun out in a ditch off Route 71, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Read more…

Is it just me or has Kristen Stewart been looking her best ever while doing the “Breaking Dawn” publicity circuit? She’s obviously very attractive, but some of her past appearances have made me cringe just because she looks so damn uncomfortable. I don’t keep up with “Twilight,” but I do keep up with celeb style, and the photos of Kristen in J. Mendel at the U.S. premiere made my jaw drop. Kristen looks gorgeous and glamorous while still managing to maintain her punky, not-overdone allure.

One thing I’ve noticed from her most recent ensembles is that she’s grown into a master of a feminine style that alludes to goth without bringing Hot Topic to mind. Classy, clean goth? What a feat! I love what Kristen does with her girly-goth sensibilities, so I’m breaking it down into tips and tricks we can all use to channel the look. (Flawless British boyfriend not required, but always preferred.) Keep reading »

“I don’t know about “role model.” But I do think she’s an incredibly strong female character, who has a sense of what she wants, and what’s right, and goes after it. I find her extremely heroic in this movie, because she is thinking about sacrificing any kind of sense of safety in the service of something that she thinks of as more important than herself. But that’s just the physical thing she goes through. And then in the second part of it, when she turns into a fierce kind of warrior vampire goddess. It’s an extraordinary kind of journey for this character who started out in such an ordinary way.”

Bill Condon, who directed “Breaking Dawn: Part 1,” answers the age-old question about whether Bella is “good” or “bad” for women. Look, I’m as interested in depictions of women in pop culture as the next feminist. There’s no question that these narratives influence us to varying degrees. With that being said… Keep reading »

Hot Links: Better Names For Bella’s Baby & Why Women (Supposedly) Don’t Like Nice Guys

  • The name of Bella’s baby in “Breaking Dawn” is “Renesmee,” a mashup of Bella’s mom’s name (Renee) and Edward’s “mom”‘s name (Esme). It is also stupid and really awkward to actually say. So here are 20 better baby names, not that there’s any changing it at this point. [The Stir]
  • This is my worst nightmare: a 17-year-old dog named Basie went missing from her owner’s backyard, so the family searched high and low and posted fliers all around their neighborhood. The next day, they found out Basie had been found, mistaken for a stray, brought to an animal hospital, and euthanized two hours later. How on earth this happened, I don’t know, but I am going home to hug the crap out of my dog Lucca. So sad. [The Stir]
