james costello krista dagostino

On April 15 of last year, two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three people were killed and almost 300 were injured. One of those injured was James Costello of Malden, Massachusetts, who was photographed with serious burns and his clothes torn following the blast. Three of Costello’s friends lost their legs and others suffered burns and shrapnel injuries.

Costello spent several weeks at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he underwent surgeries to get pig skin grafts on most of his right arm and right leg. He was then transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, where one of his nurses was a woman named Krista D’Agostino.

Now, these two are engaged. Keep reading »

It’s Time To Cry: Boston Marathon Bombing Survivor Jane Richard Sang The National Anthem At Fenway

On April 15th, Jane Richard was standing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon with her parents and brother when a bomb went off just feet from the family, killing her 8-year-old brother Martin and seriously injuring both of her parents. Jane lost a leg in the attack and spent 39 days in the ICU, but miraculously survived. After months of surgeries, physical therapy, and a new prosthetic leg, Jane, now 7, is recovering well. So well, in fact, that before yesterday’s Boston Red Sox game, she triumphantly walked to a microphone in the middle of Fenway Park and sang the national anthem. She was backed by Martin’s school choir. In a statement released in August, the Richard family spoke of the deep grief they felt daily after losing Martin, and how amazed they were at their daughter’s resilience: “Jane continues to be an incredible source of inspiration – and exhaustion,” they wrote. “The loss of her leg has not slowed her one bit, or deterred her in any way.” An appearance at Fenway was the perfect way to share that inspiration with the world. And the cherry on top? The Red Sox won. [Boston Globe]

“Too Pretty To Be Guilty,” Dzhokhar Tsarnaev Fan Club Says

As 19-year-old Boston bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev awaits trial, a legion of Americans — often teenage girls — has been furiously filling the Internet with fan club sites and support groups.

Alisha, a blond, blue-eyed 18-year-old from Topeka, Kan., is one of these Tsarnaev’s “fans.” Using her Twitter handle @keepitbluntedd, Alisha has been questioning the government’s case against the younger Tsarnaev brother. In an interview with The New York Post, Alisha even said she was planning on getting a quote of the teen (“If you have the knowledge and the inspiration all that’s left is to take action”) tattooed on her upper arm.

“He was just this pothead 19-year-old boy who didn’t care,” she told The Post. “I don’t see it.” Read more on Huffington Post…

Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s Widow, Katherine Russell, Still Under Scrutiny

Investigators say DNA found on a fragment of one of the Boston bombs is not a match with samples taken from the widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, reports NBC News. But that doesn’t mean 24-year-old Katherine Russell is in the clear. In fact, authorities are “sharpening” their investigation of her, reports the Washington Post. Among the reasons: They found extremist material on her laptop, including al-Qaeda’s Inspire magazine. What they don’t know is whether she called up the material herself or whether her husband borrowed her computer to do so. Read more on Newser…

Dance Teacher Who Lost Foot In Boston Bombing Sounds Like A Total Badass

As more stories about the victims of the Boston bombings last week are revealed by the media, it is clear that each and every person is so deserving of not only our sympathies, but also our respect. Adrianne Haslet-Davis, a ballroom dance instructor, is one of those survivors — and she is fucking awesome. Haslet-Davis was watching the Boston Marathon with her husband as spectators when the explosions went off.

“I remember two people who looked at me laying there, as if I were already dead… We sat up and I said, ‘Wait, my foot hurts.’ And then he held up my foot and we both just screamed bloody murder,” she said. “I didn’t feel heat from it. I just felt air and then I fell to the ground.” Read more on The Gloss…
