Sisters Separated By WWII And 70 Years, Reunited By Facebook

Facebook giveth and Facebook taketh away. For every story about it doing slightly creepy things or haphazardly enforced content restrictions, there’s a story like this. Tanija Delic and Hedija Talic are 88- and 82-year-old sisters who haven’t seen each other since 1941, when their family was separated while fleeing their home in Bosnia at the outbreak of war. Seventy-two years later, the internet has brought them back together again.

After losing her family, Talic was raised in an orphanage. The girls’ parents died during the war, and a brother emigrated to the United States, and despite her best efforts, Talic couldn’t find any hard information on her family once she was old enough to ask. Read more…

In The Land Of Blood & Honey
Watch Video

At long last, the trailer for Angelina Jolie‘s hella controversial directorial/screenwriting debut, “The Land of Blood and Honey,” is here.  Cast with a slew of unknown actors, the film follows the impossible romance of a Serbian man and a Boznian woman during Bosnia’s civil war (circa 1992-95). The two minute trailer features murder, persecution, sex, imprisonment and tears. A word to the wise not to catch this flick when feeling emotionally vulnerable. [ScreenRant] Keep reading »

Angelina Jolie Fires Back At Bosnian Love Story Hater

angelina jolie

Angelina Jolie has not had an easy time filming a love story set during the Bosnian war. After rumors circulated that the film told the story of a Serbian rapist and his Muslim victim, a group called the Women Victims of War Association accused Angie of “misleading history.” It’s unclear how large the group is, but they’ve gained international headlines for their complaints. Although she’s denied her flick tells a rapist’s love story, Angelina made matters worse when she did not include a copy of her script when applying for a filming permit in Bosnia, which is required. She tried the diplomatic route — offering to meet with the association — but they still threatened to complain to the United Nations for hiring her as a goodwill ambassador. Surely, that’s a notion Jennifer Aniston could latch onto. Keep reading »

(Why didn’t Jennifer Aniston think of this?) [ABC News]
  • Surprise, surprise: Sarah Palin got a bit creative with feminist history in her new book, America By Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith and Flag. Let’s do a little fact-checking, shall we? [The Daily Beast]
  • Anivia Cruz-Dilworth, a model in New Jersey, has been charged with giving unlicensed “butt-boosting” implants to six women, sending them to the hospital. The 28-year-old injected women with silicone sealant, which is used to caulk bath tubs, and covered the injection sites with Krazy Glue. Eeek! [Black Voices]

Female Balkan War Victims Pen Open Letter To Angelina Jolie

Female victims of the Balkan war have penned an angry open letter to Angelina Jolie regarding her movie “Untitled Bosnian Love Story,” in the English language newspaper The Balkan Chronicle. Angie’s directorial debut is a taboo love tale about a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman during the war that took place between 1992 and 1995. It is currently being filming in Hungary. But rumors have circulated that the characters aren’t just a Serb and a Bosnian, but a Serbian rapist and his Muslim victim. Although Angelina, her producer and even a local Sarajevo actor have all steadfastly denied that plot line (the producer called it “insane”), the Association of Women Victims of War’s open letter accuses her of trying to “falsify the historic truth about the crimes of mass gang rapes of Bosnian women.”

The letter reads: Keep reading »

Angelina Jolie Banned From Filming Controversial War Love Story In Bosnia

angelina jolie photo

Angelina Jolie has bigger PR problems than fighting off the Jennifer Aniston Fan Club: Her filming permit application has been rejected by the Bosnian government because it was not submitted with a script, as required by law. The film, a taboo love tale about a Serbian man and a Bosnian woman during the war that took place between 1992 and 1995, has outraged victims of the war. It didn’t help that rumors circulated claiming Angie’s flick was a love story between a Serbian rapist and a Muslim victim. That’s not true, but the Women Victims of War Association has accused the flick of “misleading history”; failing to fork over the screenplay when asking for a filming permit probably doesn’t help. In the meantime, Angie’s been filming in Budapest, Hungary. She may want to fix this little PR snafu before she pisses off all of Eastern Europe, though. [Us Weekly] Keep reading »
