Katy Perry Covers “Born This Way”

Covering songs is dangerous. You have to pick something obscure enough that a zillion people haven’t already done it, but recognizable enough that the audience will want to sing along. You have to give the song your own spin, while keeping true enough to the original that the song maintains its basic shape. So I think it’s a little strange that Katy Perry decided to cover “Born This Way,” Lady Gaga‘s new single that’s been accused of being a Madonna “Express Yourself” rip-off. Why? Well, because it’s so darn new. Also, I think the song is kind of a snoozer, so it you aren’t gonna pop out of an egg/womb-thingy for it, why bother? [People] Keep reading »

Lady Gaga Invites Talented Tween On Stage For Duet

Even if you’re not a fan of Lady Gaga‘s music — and would rather The Frisky didn’t post photos of her in nude catsuits — her appreciation and love for her fans can’t be denied. At her show last night in Toronto, Gaga invited 10-year-old Maria Aragon on stage to duet with her on “Born This Way.” Gaga saw Maria performing the song in a little YouTube video — which has over 17 million views! — and was so impressed that she called her up and asked if she wanted to sing live. Check out a photo of Gaga clearly moved by Maria’s performance, after the jump… Keep reading »

Lady Gaga Debuts Truly Bizarre And Epic Video For “Born This Way”

So. Lady Gaga‘s music video for “Born This Way” is out. It is the rather epic — over seven minutes! — story of a government-owned space territory called G.O.A.T. (no idea what that stands for but I’m sure I could take some acid and figure it out), where, like, a super harmonious group of people were born. Gaga explains in a voiceover (as kaleidoscoped images of childbirth give off some rather vaginal overtones):
“As the wombs numbered and the mitosis of the future began, it was perceived that this infamous moment in life is not temporal, it is eternal. and thus began the the beginning of the new race, a race within the race of humanity, a race which bears no prejudice, no judgment, but boundless freedom. But on that same day, as the eternal mother hovered in the multiverse, another more terrifying birth took place: the birth of evil.”

So how does Gaga fight the evil? By dancing in a bikini of course. I’m a big fan of sci-fi, so I can get down with this video’s story line. Also I am high on cold meds. Still can’t get over the horns though. Keep reading »

Lady Gaga On The “Born This Way” And “Express Yourself” Parallels

Ever since the Grammys, when Lady Gaga debuted “Born This Way” live, people have been commenting on how the track sounds a whole lot like Madonna‘s “Express Yourself”—it has a similar spoken-word intro and the same sentiment, not to mention that Gaga’s long ponytail for the performance was very Blonde Ambition. (Nevermind the fact that, when accepting her award that night, Gaga said she wrote the song with Whitney Houston in mind — random!) Last night, Gaga talked to Jay Leno about the controversy and got a little verklempt when she talked about Madonna. She said, looking close to tears, “There is really no one that is a more adoring or loving Madonna fan than me. I am the hugest fan personally and professionally.” She went on to say that Madonna’s camp called to say they love the song. So, case closed? [Gossip Cop] Keep reading »

Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” Finally Drops

The first single and title track off Lady Gaga’s forthcoming album Born This Way has finally arrived! As expected, the song is a synth-heavy and highly danceable celebration of being yourself. Writes Andy at Popdust:
The lyrics spill out a riff on the “It gets better” story pop music titans have been trying to tell since last fall with a more unrepentantly anthemic take on what it is to be different: “I was born this way, hey!” is destined for millions of Facebook status updates and Twitter bon mots, but first and foremost, this is a song all of the many groups in Gaga’s monstrous coalition can dance to.

What do you think of “Born This Way”? Are you psyched for the album’s release in March? [Popdust] Keep reading »
