Makeup Guru Bobbi Brown To Head Yahoo Beauty — Um, Is That Even Remotely Ethical?

bobbi brown makeup

Bobbi Brown, the world-renowned makeup artist behind Bobbi Brown cosmetics, announced today that she is joining Yahoo as the new editor-in-chief of Yahoo Beauty. In addition to “curat[ing] smart, strong content that will teach women how to be their best self,” she’ll continue her duties as the CCO at Bobbi Brown.

I’m an enormous Bobbi Brown fan, both the brand and the person. I saw her speak on a panel a few years ago and immediately admired how she juggles being the head of her own company and mother. She’s a rad feminist who supports causes I believe in and I really respect the fact that she lives in and raises her kids in suburban New Jersey instead of NYC or LA. And her products are awesome; I’ve got both her concealer and her lipstick in my purse right now.

That being said, I have enormous doubts about the ethics of the head of a beauty company becoming the editor-in-chief of a beauty blog on Yahoo. The role isn’t “advisor.” It’s not even “contributing editor.” It’s editor-in-chief. Please tell me how is this not just a huge commercial for Bobbi Brown’s makeup company?  Keep reading »

I’ve never been big on lipstick. I have thin lips and I also drink coffee constantly, so it seemed like any foray into lipstick would be a waste. But as I get older (and wean myself off caffeine), I’ve taken the plunge into what feels like more grown-up makeup than my usual lip balm, or if I’m feeling fancy, lip gloss. Recently I splurged on Bobbi Brown’s Rich Lip Color in Cosmic Raspberry at Bloomingdales (AKA that flaming pit in which I throw my money). Keep reading »

Lipstick 101: How To Find The Perfect Bold Lipstick

Figuring out how to wear a bold lip can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not used to wearing lipstick. (Or if you’re basically used to ignoring the fact that you have lips on your face altogether.) The wrong shade can wash you out, or make you look lizard-y. And when you’re wearing a bright, bold lip color you just can’t help but feel so out there in the open.

So that’s why we teamed up with esteemed makeup artist Susana to get a quick lesson on Lipstick 101. What we learned: you don’t have to fear a bold lip. Bright lipsticks can be fun, dramatic and totally sexy!

Whitney Houston’s Daughter Bobbi Kristina Allegedly Rushed To The Hospital

RIP: Whitney Houston
Updated information on the passing of Whitney Houston. Read More »

More upsetting news: TMZ is reporting that Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18, was rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel — where her mother passed away yesterday — to the hospital today. No word on why or what her possible condition is. Last night, Bobbi Kristina allegedly got into a shouting match with law enforcement because they wouldn’t let her inside her mother’s room. [TMZ, Popdust]

According to Us Weekly, the grieving young woman is being treated for “stress,” and was taken from the hotel on a stretcher (though I believe that is standard procedure when an ambulance is called).  [Us Weekly]

Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston’s only child, and we hope that her family and friends are focused on giving her the support she needs.

You Made Me An Eyeshadowboxer, Baby

Now that spring has sprung, you’ll be batting your eyes a bunch. The six shadows in Bobbi Brown‘s Peony & Python Palette, inspired by the designer Tibi, will make those peepers pop! The eyeshadow shades range from charcoal to lavender to plum and come with a good sized compact mirror and not one, but two, brushes. Sure, $50 sounds like a lot for eye makeup, but remember you get six shades here. This limited edition palette can be mixed and matched to find the perfect smoky eye that will make him weak in the knees.

What The Rich Ladies On Glamour’s “Love Your Life” Panel Can Teach You About Work-Life Balance

Yesterday I was thrilled to leave work early and attend Glamour magazine’s “Love Your Life” conference, held at New York City’s 92nd St Y. I only got to hear one of the two panel discussions: “Love Your Work Life.” With a lineup including “Top Chef”‘s Padma Lakshmi, designer Anna Sui, makeup guru Bobbi Brown, Dylan’s Candy Bar owner Dylan Lauren, and my old boss, politics blogger Arianna Huffington, who wouldn’t be psyched? The panel, moderated by journalist Deborah Roberts, was supposed to be about “high-achieving women discuss[ing] success and work-life balance.” And while there were some really solid gold pieces of career advice dished out (Anna Sui, adopt me!), I also couldn’t help but feel frustrated by how little I could relate to these women, who are faaar wealthier than the average woman ever will be. Most of us won’t be so lucky, like Padma Lakshmi, to force herself to let her baby’s nanny deal with her crying child.

After the jump, some of the afternoon’s highlights, both good and bad: Keep reading »
