I’ve never been big on lipstick. I have thin lips and I also drink coffee constantly, so it seemed like any foray into lipstick would be a waste. But as I get older (and wean myself off caffeine), I’ve taken the plunge into what feels like more grown-up makeup than my usual lip balm, or if I’m feeling fancy, lip gloss. Figuring out how to wear a bold lip can be a daunting task, especially if you’re not used to wearing lipstick. (Or if you’re basically used to ignoring the fact that you have lips on your face altogether.) The wrong shade can wash you out, or make you look lizard-y. And when you’re wearing a bright, bold lip color you just can’t help but feel so out there in the open.
So that’s why we teamed up with esteemed makeup artist Susana to get a quick lesson on Lipstick 101. What we learned: you don’t have to fear a bold lip. Bright lipsticks can be fun, dramatic and totally sexy!
More upsetting news: TMZ is reporting that Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina, 18, was rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel — where her mother passed away yesterday — to the hospital today. No word on why or what her possible condition is. Last night, Bobbi Kristina allegedly got into a shouting match with law enforcement because they wouldn’t let her inside her mother’s room. According to Us Weekly, the grieving young woman is being treated for “stress,” and was taken from the hotel on a stretcher (though I believe that is standard procedure when an ambulance is called). [Us Weekly]
Our thoughts and prayers are with Houston’s only child, and we hope that her family and friends are focused on giving her the support she needs.

Yesterday I was thrilled to leave work early and attend Glamour magazine’s “Love Your Life” conference, held at New York City’s 92nd St Y. I only got to hear one of the two panel discussions: “Love Your Work Life.” With a lineup including “Top Chef”‘s Padma Lakshmi, designer Anna Sui, makeup guru Bobbi Brown, Dylan’s Candy Bar owner Dylan Lauren, and my old boss, politics blogger Arianna Huffington, who wouldn’t be psyched? The panel, moderated by journalist Deborah Roberts, was supposed to be about “high-achieving women discuss[ing] success and work-life balance.” And while there were some really solid gold pieces of career advice dished out (Anna Sui, adopt me!), I also couldn’t help but feel frustrated by how little I could relate to these women, who are faaar wealthier than the average woman ever will be. Most of us won’t be so lucky, like Padma Lakshmi, to force herself to let her baby’s nanny deal with her crying child.
