Unlikely Style Icon: Bjork

Yeah, everybody knows Bjork for her wackadoodle swan dress she wore to the 2001 Oscars, but there’s so much more to her.Take this outfit she wore to the Webby Awards earlier this week — a futuristic Iris Van Herpen dress paired with wild multi-colored locks. It’s totally not something that most of us could wear, but it’s completely Bjork-appropriate and somehow it works on her. And hey, she owns it. In a 2005 interview, she said, “I guess I was a bit of a lost case from the start really, I started really young dressing up in my grandfather’s clothes. I remember my grandpa had like woolen really thick pants, you know, and I cut off the legs by the knee and then they were long for me.”

Bjork’s just magical like that, and she teaches us all that if you want to wear something a little different, a little crazy, you just have to own it — just like Bjork completely owns her unique way of singing.  After the jump, more of our fave Bjork style moments, and not a whiff of that swan dress among them.

Björk Is Back, And Ready To Attack

Raise your hand if you are excited for Björk‘s new album, Biophilia, which will drop in late September. Luckily, she has cut the suspense, releasing her first video from the album, “Crystalline,” this morning. Not only is the song thorougly embedded in my head now, the video is also dope. Not that I should be surprised—it’s directed by the amazing Michel Gondry. Enjoy. [Village Voice] Keep reading »

At the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen‘s memorial service on Monday, Bjork sang a moving rendition of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday” for the glamorous gathered to mourn at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. For her performance, she wore a pair of “angel wings” created by McQueen, who took his life earlier this year on the day before his mother’s funeral. You can see a close-up of the singer’s wings here. Keep reading »

Bjork Enlists Moomins To Star In “The Comet Song” Video

If you ever read Finn Family Moomintroll as a child, you’ll surely recognize the characters who populate Bjork‘s latest music video, “The Comet Song.” The Moomins children’s book series was created by Tove Jansson and went on to gain worldwide popularity, primarily due to its main characters: soft, white, fluffy Mommin creatures that live in Finland. The song appears in “Moomins and the Comet Chase,” a new movie compiled from a stop motion Moomin TV series that ran in Poland from 1977 to 1982. It stars Moomintroll, Moominmama, Moominpapa, Snufkin, Sniff, a Hemulen, the Hattifatteners, and more. (But where’s Little My?) [Your Music Today] Keep reading »
