6 Celebrities With Completely Weird Ideas About Science

One of the weirder bits of news making headlines this week was that our beloved Red on “Orange Is The New Black” may be a little bit kooky in real life. Why would I say such a thing? Because the actress Kate Mulgrew has narrated a documentary with some pretty kooky beliefs about science:  namely, the idea the Earth does not actually revolve around the sun but instead the sun revolves around the Earth. Geocentricism what what?!?  In a new documentary called “The Principle” narrated by Mulgrew, she intones, “Everything we think we know about our universe is wrong.”

Considering this is the woman, Amelia reminds me, that played Captain Janeway on “Star Trek: Voyager,” it seemed a little odd that Mulgrew would be so ill-informed. Turns out, Mulgrew is now saying she was misled into doing the narration for the documentary and that she was simply a voice for hire who should have done more research. Um, no kidding? Didn’t Mulgrew realize she was narrating junk science as the junk science narration was spilling out of her mouth? [Raw StoryAV Club]

Kate Mulgrew, inadvertent or not, isn’t the first celeb to spew interesting beliefs about science. There are actually quite a few celebrities who have made comments about science that gave us a double take. Let’s take a walk through a couple celebs who we think should keep their day jobs…

Today In UGH: Adam Carolla Joins Fox News

Adam Carolla

The former “Man Show” host Adam Carolla has been all too happy to be a professional douche. That time he said women are not as funny as men? The time he asked, “When did we start giving a shit about [transgender] people?” So … SURPRISE! … now Carolla has joined Fox News as a commentator. He’ll be chumming it up with Bill O’Reilly on “The O’Reilly Factor” and appear on other shows occasionally as well.

The last thing that network needs is another dude who tries to pass off bigotry as “humor.” I understand that Carolla has some opinions that might be considered “liberal,” but I sure as shit do not consider a homophobic sexist qualified to represent me or most other liberals I know. Another reason not to watch this trash (although, in fairness, the only time I watch any Fox News is when my nearly-70-year-old suburban Republican father puts it on when I go visit — so, enjoy Dad!). [NYMag.com] [Photo: Getty]

Bill O’Reilly: “Many Women Who Get Pregnant Are Blasted Out Of Their Minds When They Have Sex”

Birth control should not be covered without co-pays as part of preventative health care, Bill O’Reilly says, because “many women who get pregnant are blasted out of their minds when they have sex, [so] they’re not going to use birth control anyway.” He introduces this Fox News segment while talking about pot and booze and says covering the Pill would cost four billion dollars a year (um, can I get a source on that?) and suggests improving access to birth control will “maybe” cut back on the number of abortions, foster care, and people on welfare.

First of all, WHAT? Second of all, WHAT WHAT WHAT? Keep reading »

Quickies: Angelina Praises Brad’s Hefty Package & Why Is Bill O’Reilly Screaming At Kim Kardashian?

  • Naomi Campbell may sue Cadbury, the chocolate company, for an ad she says is racist which reads, “Move over Naomi, there’s a new diva in town.” She told the UK Independent, “It’s upsetting to be described as chocolate. … It is insulting and hurtful.” [Styleite]

Today’s Lady News: Bill O’Reilly Sees No Media “Gender Bias” Against Sarah Palin

  • Bill O’Reilly said on “The O’Reilly Factor” last Thursday that he did not see any gender bias in the media’s coverage of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann. Palin herself has said the media’s treatment of her has been sexist at times. You know, this actually makes me feel a little bad for these two women: it must suck to have a man from your side of the aisle be dismissive of the B.S. you go through. [Daily Caller]
  • Rep. Gabrielle Giffords may be out of the hospital on Friday, her husband has said. Her next stop will be a rehabilitation center in Texas to overcome injuries from the gunshot wound to the head she sustained during the mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, two weeks ago. We wish her a swift recovery. [MSNBC]
  • George Bronk, 23, of California, has plead guilty to breaking into 3,200 women’s email accounts and searching for nude photos of them, which he then posted to the Internet. Bronk allegedly read Facebook profiles looking for answers to Yahoo’s standard security questions. He was able to find nude or semi-nude photos from 172 women. Creeps: they walk among us. [PC World]

Sarah Palin Calls Herself A Feminist, Promptly Renounces Feminism

I know nothing will put some warm, fuzzy Christmas cheer in your heart like listening to Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin discuss feminism. So let’s dive right in and hear what Mama Grizzly has to say, shall we? Keep reading »

Colbert Tells “The View” To Leave “Papa Bear” Alone

The women of “The View” definitely learned one thing from Stephen Colbert‘s visit yesterday: Don’t mess with Papa Bear. That’s Colbert’s nickname for Bill O’Reilly. In a show of solidarity with O’Reilly, Colbert pretended to walk off the set of “The View” yesterday during his segment. Colbert’s gesture was in reference to O’Reilly’s controversial “View” visit last week, where both Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar walked off set in the midst of O’Reilly’s interview. 5 Things To Know About Christine O’Donnell

When did conservative female political candidates who make bombastic statements become so chic? First there was Sarah Palin, then Michele Bachmann, and now Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell is the toast of Delaware’s Senate race. For the love of vaginas, Victoria Woodhull, Shirley Chisholm and Geraldine Ferraro did not smash through the glass ceiling so that their successors could clog up the 24/7 news cycle with their anti-sex, anti-woman views.

Frankly, Christine O’Donnell’s declaration on the MTV series “Sex In the ’90s” that masturbation is a sin is all the crazy I need to know to make my assessment about her. But in case you and your lustful heart want to give O’Donnell a chance, here are five things to know about her. And you know you want to know how Mel Gibson is involved. Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Jennifer Aniston Glamorizes Single Motherhood, Says Bill O’Reilly

  • Do you know who is the most raging feminist ever to encourage women to leave their husbands, kill their babies and practice witchcraft? Jennifer Aniston. Comments she made about women not needing men to become parents while promoting her new movie “The Switch” (plot: she is 41, single and gets pregnant via a sperm donor) are apparently glamorizing single motherhood for the 12-year-old girls at home. This is an outrage, says Bill O’Reilly and his guest, Gretchen Carlson, who had no idea Aniston was once married to Brad Pitt. [Gawker]
  • An anti-abortion billboard alleging to depict an aborted fetus went up last week in Midland, Texas, across from a Planned Parenthood clinic. “Of course we have freedom of speech, but it’s another form of intimidation,” said a Planned Parenthood rep. [NewsWest9.com]
  • Dr. Martin Luther King’s niece, Dr. Alveda King, addressed an anti-gay marriage rally last weekend and said same-sex marriage will lead to “extinction” and “genocide.” [Black Voices]

Bill O’Reilly Shows Clip Of Erin Andrews Nude Video On His Show

The drama of Erin Andrews, the ESPN sports reporter filmed naked in a hotel room by a Peeping Tom, just keeps getting sicker. Gawker snagged a clip of Bill O’Reilly actually showing part of the nude video of Andrews on “The O’Reilly Factor” last night. They blurred out Andrews’ private parts, but still. Don’t harangue about how depraved and disturbing the Peeping Tom (who may have been a co-worker of Andrews’) and then show the clip yourself. It’s called hypocrisy.
