We See Chick Flicks: Cadillac Records

I took myself on a date yesterday to see “Cadillac Records” because I’m a history buff and love a biopic. Plus, I get fashion inspiration by seeing how people dressed in the past. I read very few reviews of the film before watching it because I wanted the movie to speak for itself. I was rather entertained, but, since I’m not a real blues fan or scholar, I didn’t notice the historical inaccuracies. Keep reading »

    Injury Accessories: Celebrity Trend?

    Something strange is going on in the world of fashion, and we’re hoping it stays within the realm of daring performers so we don’t have to participate. Both Beyonce and Rihanna have recently worn accessories that a person who has lost a body part might wear. First, there was Beyonce and her bionic gling, a hand-encompassing ring that bears some resemblance to a high-end prosthetic hand. Then, at last night’s American Music Awards, Rihanna performed “Rehab” with a shiny eyepatch covering her right peeper. We know she didn’t cut her lens, because the thing was gone by the time she started in on the second verse. Why are these two singers sporting these “bodily harm” accessories, and is Lady Gaga wearing a leg brace covered in rhinestones next? Only their stylists know. And speaking of stylists, Bey and Ri either share a stylist or both saw this fashion story in Vogue Italia, which featured a gling AND a silver eyepatch. Coincidence?

    Video Parodies: “Single Ladies (And Men) Put A Ring On It”

    We’ve really caught Sasha Fierce fever here in The Frisky offices. At least once a day, “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” blares from one of our computers. And some of us plan to learn the choreography this weekend. After watching the “Saturday Night Live” skit with Beyonce and Justin Timberlake, we knew there had to be other parody videos. And we were right (we really love when that happens). There are videos of men and women of different sizes and ages “performing” the choreography from “Single Ladies.” We even found a video in which “Mexican Breakfast” video was redubbed with “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It).” As you know, Bob Fosse created the dance routine for “Mexican Breakfast” and Beyonce borrowed it for her video.       With this two disc release, Beyonce is all about fantasizing. She’s been slipping on her gling and calling herself Sasha Fierce. The first disc she’s still Beyonce, imagining what she’d do “If I Were A Boy.” Yet she’s got something to say to the gents, “If you like it, you should put a ring on it.” Hm, wonder if that’s the line she used on Jay-Z? But truly, the Queen B is going deeper on her record. Soft songs like “That’s Why You’re Beautiful” are atypical for the happenin’ hit maker, but they beautifully subtle, for once. As Sasha Fierce, on disc two, she throws the dance floor some bones with hot tracks like “Diva” and “Radio.” There’s something for everyone, from club bumpin’ “Say My Name”-esque booty jams to adult laments.
