John Mayer’s Acoustic Cover Of “XO” Isn’t Too Shabby

Can't Go Wrong With A Quality Bey Cover!

Like many members of the female population, I have some misgivings about John Mayer. I’ve pretty much lost my ability to enjoy his music for what it is without thoughts of his douchey personality tainting my experience. That said, his cover of Beyonce’s “XO” is quite nice. If you like John’s musical style, you’ll love his raw, romantic interpretation of the song. [Huffington Post]

“Tuition,” A Cover Of Beyoncé’s Song “Partition” About Student Loans, Is Beyond Real

Sallie Mae, Pay Off My Tuition Please

Beyoncé may have already sung about someone “callin’ like a collector” but she’s probably never wondered “if I owe Sallie Mae or I owe the mob.” That’s what Chanel Carroll sings in her completely on point parody cover of “Partition” called (duh) “Tuition” about the loan giant Sallie Mae. Pay all my loans please, I just wanna live the debt-free life …  Oh man, as a fellow NYU grad who also used a buttload of loans to pay for school, I so relate to that one. Those student loan collection people are persistent and will hunt you down!  Maybe Bey will see this spoof and offer to foot the bill? Emma Watson Is “Conflicted” About Beyoncé’s Feminist Credentials

OMG Beyonce dropped a surprise album! Read More »

“As I was watching [Beyoncé's visual album] I felt very conflicted, I felt her message felt very conflicted in the sense that on the one hand she is putting herself in a category of a feminist, but then the camera, it felt very male, such a male voyeuristic experience of her.”

Emma Watson and Rookie Mag editor Tavi Gevinson had a chat for Wonderland magazine and naturally the subject turned to Beyoncé (because every subject eventually turns to Beyoncé) and feminism. Tavi gave a much longer, well-thought-out response with her opinions about Beyoncé, sexuality and agency, but I tend to agree with how Emma Watson feels here. That is, I generally enjoy Bey’s music but I’m conflicted about her lyrics and some imagery in her videos. It seems to me that Bey sings and presents some problematic stuff in her videos, but everyone just fawns all over her anyway, for being a mega-super-famous superstar who identifies as feminist. (I am also fairly certain this viewpoint might get me fired from The Frisky, as Amelia is Beyonce’s number one fan, as in she wants to wear Bey like a skin suit. If I’m not here Monday, you know what happened.) [NYMag.com via Wonderland]

"You Got Me Snatching Wigs!"
  • Someone threw a weave (their weave? someone else’s weave?) at Beyoncé this weekend at the O2 in London while she was performing “XO.” Queen Bey, of course, took the weave attack in stride: she stopped singing for a brief moment to admonish, “You got me snatching wigs, snatching wigs!” [Global Grind]

Rutgers Is Offering A Course Called “Politicizing Beyoncé”

  • The Women’s and Gender Studies Department at Rutgers University in New Jersey is offering a class called “Politicizing Beyoncé,” which uses the pop star as a lens to examine racial and sexual issues in America, particularly as they pertain to Black feminism. All students need to earn at least a “Bey” to pass the class. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.) [CBS Local]

Lorde’s Birth Certificate Has Hit The Internet, And Yes, She’s Actually 17

lorde-performs

A copy of Lorde’s birth certificate has been presented to the world this week, courtesy of The Hairpin. The form proves that Lorde really is 17, which will no doubt anger the cult of “Lorde birth truthers” that believe she’s lying about her age and is actually much older.

I suppose there’s a possibility that the New Zealand birth certificate could be falsified by some bizarre stretch of the imagination, but who really cares? Apparently, the truthers do, and they insist that Lorde is 10 years older and pretending to be a child prodigy to rake in more attention. Keep reading »

Radio Station Censors Beyoncé’s “Drunk In Love” Over Domestic Violence Lyrics

  • A British radio station called Bang Radio has edited out lyrics of Beyoncé and Jay Z’s song “Drunk In Love” that reference domestic violence. Init, Jay Z raps “Now eat the cake, Anna Mae / I said eat the cake, Anna Mae,” which is a reference to the film “What’s Love Got To Do With It” about Tina and Ike Turner’s relationship. In one scene, Angela Bassett, who plays Tina, is forced to eat cake by her abusive husband. Explaining their decision, Bang Radio released a statement saying: “We will continue to serve in social equality for people through music and content on our station.” [Eonline, Mirror UK]

This Is What 28 Beyoncé Songs In 6 Minutes Sounds Like

beyonce a cappella
A Cappella Beyonce

How could we have missed this? An a cappella group called Pentatonix (yes, people do a cappella outside of college) filmed a medley of 28 rapid-fire Beyoncé songs in only six minutes. All your favorites from the Bey ouevre make an appearance. “Say My Name”? Duh. “Survivor”? Check. “Single Ladies”? Yup. “Halo”? Obviously. Okay, some of these songs are from Destiny’s Child, but it still counts! The video was posted on YouTube in October, so it misses all the songs from Beyoncé’s latest album, BEYONCE. Maybe Pentatonix will do another one?  [YouTube]
